I saw some dude on KZfaq, he made Amiga synthwave with Amiga software. The Amiga soundchip is was in the 80's and early 90's. My brother had one and I had Atari 5200 and Sega mastersystem pal version. So many nostalgic moments.

The Virtual Boy has a small library, but the games it does have are almost all excellent. It's an absolute shame Nintendo never did any ports of enhanced sequels to Virtual Boy games like Teleroboxer, Mario Clash and of course, VirtualBoy Wario Land. If you can get ahold of a working VirtualBoy, it's totally worth it. Emulation is nice, but 2D just isn't how these games were designed to be played.

@@SatoshiMatrix1 I agree. I unfortunately sold mine years ago and never got to play all the titles that were available for it, but the games that I did play were very good. Teleroboxer is a bit short, but lots of fun to play. Mario Tennis is a great use of the 3D effect and never gets old. Red Alarm looks like a mess in screenshots but looks awesome when you're actually playing it, and the controls are great. Galactic Pinball is another one that I would spend hours playing almost every night. My only real gripe about the library is that the fact that it's so small leaves you wanting more. Having only owned 3 games for it (I rented Teleroboxer), I always wanted a little more variety. My favorite thing about the Virtual Boy is the controller. It's probably the most comfortable controller ever made. I also liked the fact that you could swap out the battery module with an adapter that utilized an SNES power cord.

I saw Amiga in the thumbnail and clicked immediately. Ruff 'n Tumble and Yo! Joe are good picks, but there are also a lot of truly fantastic games on that thing, Turrican II being my absolute favorite (and one of my favorite games period). Insanely good soundtracks are also kind of a running theme for the system. If you're into video game music and haven't looked into Amiga soundtracks, I highly recommend doing so. The title themes in particular are worth looking up.

the chaos engine (aka soldiers of fortune)! although admittedly i do prefer the main theme and the sound of some of the instruments in the megadrive/genesis version, it was originally an amiga game

You post some excellent videos with some games I can't wait to try. I also appreciate your embrace of emulation for those who may not be able to spend much on retro games. "Play this one any way you can" really should be the tag line for your channel, it's more appealing than "SNESdrunk" :P

@OjaruFan It's just what we had. PC's weren't affordable and were just considered inferior in terms of graphics and sound (in fairness it was). PC's didn't really start to take off until Doom.

The Amiga also had a more modern OS for office/desktop applications at the time. As if you would have mixed classic MacOS with Windows 95, but in 1986.

Great episode and was pleased to see Ruff n Tumble feature as that's a great game for the good 'ol miggy. If you do a follow-up episode, might I suggest you try "Lionheart" on the Amiga as not only it's a good action platformer, it's also an excellent technical showpiece for the machine which features effects that would put the SNES to shame.

Props for bringing up Return Fire. It had a competitive/co-op multiplayer on PC and my friend and I had a pretty great time with it back when. Had completely forgotten the name and, for the most part, the game itself until this video.

A500 is 87 IIRC, the 1st affordable Amiga. Before A500 Amiga was only a buggy workstation-type computer, not bought for games.

@@noop9k Hardware wise there is no difference between an A500 and a 1985 A1000, both use OCS* chipset. The only difference is that Agnus was made Fat for the Amiga 500 migrating lots of discrete logic from the A1000 into Agnus making a single 'Fat' Agnus package. Otherwise a 1985 A1000 will play Ruff n Tumble just fine with no modifications. (* Late Amiga 500s contain a so called ECS 'Fatter' Agnus)

Pixel Vixen buggy os, amount of RAM, shape, price. I never said they were different hardware. A1000 wasn’t affordable and there were nearly no games. Again, A1000 was priced way beyond acceptable limit for a gaming system. No customers - no games. A500 was a device bought by many purely as a games console, creating a viable market for games(but until, maybe, 89, primary target still was the ST). That’s the difference.

The Amiga was quite capable, and there's a whole bunch of hidden and not so hidden gems on that. For the 80's home computers, I would argue that that's probably the best one for games. Sure, there's competition, and there are plenty of games that were not released on it, but just generally speaking, the Amiga makes a pretty good showing.

If you're talking about run and gun platformer with amazing soundtracks, you can't forget that the Turrican series started on the Amiga.

@DejaVoodooDoll In many cases, but obviously not all, the Amiga version was the superior though. Particularly for games released early on in the Amiga's lifecycle. Any home computer from that era would have an insane number of trash games though, and arcade ports to home computers would rarely be good.

As for arcade ports it has the best non emulated versions of ggosts and gonlins, toki and silkworm (whih is better than the arcade in both sound and gameplay)

Believe a few jackass American KZfaqrs who have zero knowledge of the Amiga and you might think there's nothing to miss out on. Look at the world objectively and you'll realise you've been stuck in a tiny bubble your whole life. Go out there and discover what the rest of the world was doing while America was stuck in its own echo chamber.

I've got a real soft-spot for the 3DO. SNES Drunk! You should totally do a video of SNES games that got updated re-releases on the 3DO...there are at least 3! (Soccer Kid, Fun and Games, and Ballz 3D: Director's Cut...doesn't sound appealing, but the 3DO versions were far, far better than the SNES versions)

It's crazy to think about how expensive both of those consoles were when released. So expensive that no one could afford to buy the jaguar or Panasonic 3do. And that's why they simply couldn't compete with sega and nintendo. Then once Sony playstation came out with the black discs for an affordable price it was officially game over for any up and coming competitors, except for Microsoft of course.

Mine was classic Street Fighter 2 but I also had the Hyper Fighting edition that I always play on the fastest setting. I also had the one that came out before Street Fighter Alpha- the one that introduced Fei Long and had 24 players. I forget which one it was.

The marathon trilogy on PC is excellent, truly a great thing that it was liberated from Apple's graveyard, there is even a small but dedicated mod community around it, and it's free now. Can't ask for more than that really.

A 3DO logo in the thumbnail? Starting with VB Wario Land?? I'm excited for this!! EDIT: One of those rare 90's kids who had a 3DO and a Lynx checking in here. Return Fire was great, especially with its 2-Player multiplayer! I THINK it had co-op too! It's one of those 3DO games with a PlayStation port that was so much better on the 3DO, like Gex and Road Rash.

I think that 3DO should have encouraged developers to put exclusive content in the 3DO versions of their games, like an exclusive level, item, game mode, boss battle, or playable character. I think that would have helped them sell so many more consoles and games. They might have actually been able to survive for a full console life cycle that way(which is typically 5 or 6 years), and we may have actually seen the M2 get released.

Love these unique collections you put together! The individual in-depth reviews for obscure games are certainly well put-together, but knowing stuff like "Rocko's Modern Life for SNES is okay if you already a fan of the show or action puzzlers" is not useful information to many people. 5:36 "it's pretty much just Doom with a new coat of paint" So like, the Marathon series has the most delightfully overwrought, pretentious plot of just about any game series, even though it plays out over terminal text. Durandal waxes about Hegelian dialectics, and Tycho's breakdowns are pulled straight out of Jung. Anyone who's found the rabbit hole of Undertale's Gaster should definitely look up Hamish Sinclair's Marathon Story Page, because Bungie sure had a different relationship to narrative back then!

NICE VIDEO AS ALWAYS DRUNK, I might as well add Jetpac on the ZX Spectrum. That console took forever to load games and the side-scrollers were real slugs, but Jetpac plays tremendously well and tremendously fast! I got to play that on a co-workers ZX Spectrum "mini" that he brought to the office (it was a kickstarter project) in a previous job. I always love it when you name your characters "drunk".

I was the perfect age for when the Virtual Boy came out, so I got lost in the novelty, and really enjoyed my time with the system. Wario was my introduction to the character, and the long levels and second quest gave me something to sink my teeth into. I remember only owning a handful of games, like Mario Tennis, the Mario Bros style game Mario Clash... and I think that might be it?? Lol. I absolutely LOVED the VB controller. It was this weird amalgamation of an NES A and B button layout on a GameCube style body with GC style L and R bumpers... with two D-pads! It was crazy comfortable (unlike the NES or SNES controllers) and I would stick my face in that thing and play for HOURS on end. I even found a way to hold it in my lap and play it hunched over in the back seat of my moms car when we would go on long road trips. 2-6 hour long nonstop VB sessions in a moving vehicle. I couldn’t get motion sickness if I tried lol 😂

It's better than WL1. But WL2&3 are completely different games. Wario Land 4 happens to the best designed and well paced game in the series. Especially creative.

I really love the idea behind this list! I always love finding games on consoles no one would expect them on. A personal one I've always found cool is Ogre Battle 64. A 2D, story-heavy strategy game on the N64? Yes pls. Also, Panic Bomber, block dropping puzzler, has always been one of my favorites on Virtual Boy

Agree. Jack Bros is actually great, and there are other somewhat flawed but still good games, like Teleroboxer or Mario Clash. Half of the games released for the system are decent enough to be played nowadays... on emulator with grey-scale and no headaches xD

The channel Jeremy Parish is superb, and he's doing in depth reviews on every single Virtual Boy game (as well as doing reviews on every single game boy, nes, snes and mega drive games, and they're not just very quick reviews, he goes very in depth on everything)

What do you mean "totally cover more Virtual Boy games"? There were a total of 22 games for the system. If he wanted to, he could "totally cover" them in one video (and there wouldn't be "more" to cover). LoL

I still play my Virtual Boy monthly, I just love the system. And, you must be playing Alpha on a rom, cause that game on the SNES lagggssss. Great video, as usual.

HOLY SHIT!!! I could not remember the name of that game for YEARS, but Return Fire for the 3DO WAS THE JAM!!! The multiplayer VS mode was, among my cousins, the most serious of business.

Return Fire was released on the PC around the same time as the 3DO version. What I remember most fondly of it was the split-screen 1vs1 mode, that was a lot of fun.

Blue Lightning made me want a Linx when I was a kid. Looked so cool. But I'm glad I stuck with my Gameboy. Pound for pound, Gameboy was a beast.

The thing that really stands out about Yo! Joe is the 2-player simultaneous mode! Not many platform games were made for two players.

Return Fire was released on PS and Saturn as well. It's also the successor to "Fire Power" on the Amiga 500 which is euqually awesome.

The Apple Pippin is actually a Bandai product, Bandai manufactured and marketed the system in Japan and the US. Apple designed the Pippin to be a multimedia platform, exactly like the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, which 3DO licensed out to manufacturers like Panasonic. The Pippin is essentially a PowerPC computer inside a console box (that's why the graphics look so good, I mean for $600 you were actually getting some pretty good hardware). It was part of Apple's strategy to increase the Macintosh hardware base without having to spend the money to build the hardware themselves. Macs from around that time can play Pippin software.

Yeah, the NES version was my first exposure to the game. Later I got it on my ol' Macintosh computer. I always wanted to try the Genesis version.

The "3D' 2-plane approach for VB Wario Land, did have a lasting legacy, in that it apparently helped inspire the same mechanic for the Mutant Mudds series.

I learned about Doom on the Snes. I loved it, and beat it numerous times, including on Nightmare. Which by the time I made it to that difficulty, wasn't too bad.

The specialized press in my country talked a lot about Street Fighter Alpha 2 for SNES when it was released, it was during the long waiting for the N64 release when PSX and Saturn have been there for a while. Many considered SNES's swan song, it's last greatest game.

I had a Lynx back in the day. It was a good system, and deserved a bigger library. Summer Games and Rastan were my go-to titles. I had a 3DO, too. I always tended to back the consoles that wound up failing. lol
