When I first started this piano journey a couple of years ago, I was motivated to "do it right," and I started to look at massive amounts of material to help me have the right approach. These videos are helping me to emphasize those ideas so that I don't develop any ingrained bad habits. Well done!

Thanks and good luck with your practise! One thing that springs to mind is 'paralysis by analysis' so just be careful not to go too far the other way and overthink every aspect. You have the right mindset but mistakes are part of the learning process and I'm a firm believer in learning mostly by getting stuck in and actually 'doing it' as well as having tips along the way to make the process easier.

This is a really great explanation of finger positioning and movement around the keys. Many of these things I realize I have learned over time, however you have articulated the many different situations one will encounter and a useful approach to each one. I don’t think I was ever taught more than, “relax your wrist and keep your fingers curved.” There is so much more to it than that depending upon what is being played, as you’ve so nicely illustrated.

I can't wait to learn more and get my hands on a actual piano ❤ It's totally not the same, though, because I can use mutiple fingers to hit one key that's highlighted and in real life I would hit all the keys and the song would be ruined lol. 🙃 but it's great practice in the meantime 😊

Any advise for those of us with thick non-pointy fingers? Every time I try your technique on chords with straddled white keys I pull along both straddling black keys! The only way I manage is by turning my hand so the fingers get in sideways. But that's really tiring and slows me down considerably.

Thank you for this video, very helpful and informative as always! I'm trying to be mindful of my hand placement during practice but one thing I have really been struggling with is pressing the keys when I move my hand deeper into the piano (especially the black ones and especially when it's a chord). I feel like the issue is that I am still having a hard time learning to use my hand weight instead of pressing with the fingers but I am not sure. Do you have any insight?

Okay one question boss if like I playing all black keys scale or even like C# F# or B scale which have all black keys ..u many times comes into situation where u just dont use in between white keys. So I basically practice skipping a black key inbetween my fingers... Especially like if my middle 3 fingers on 3 black keys combo and I have to hit D# of next octave. I only have option to hit it with lil finger. So its one skiped black key inbetween. Like 4th on Bb and then hit D# with pinky move hand altogether to C# D# combo or just hit D# with pinky and come back. Now honestly speaking as a newbie its not that comfortable to skip a black key between fingers. Especially pinky and 4th but I can now reach it somewhat than what I use to do in absolute start. So is it over stretching as u say or training them this way is okay? And it might be more comfortable and accurate at even higher tempo in days to come... No? I mean u just somewhat reach it but not that comfortably but if u rotate a hand a bit pivoting on Bb u can reach it in more comfortable manner and lil more accurate manner than just try reach it by stretching pinky to D#. Though u have to especially train for it to execute it smoothly and accurately at higher tempos. Cause I think u have to be comfortable skipping one black key inbetween.. cause sometimes its absolutely necessary or efficient. Though I guess it need lot of practice to be comfortable and accurate without stress to have that. So whats your take on this as a experienced player. U might have encountered such situation many times in your playing I guess. Or is it really over stretching or over thinking as u say. I mean with lil twist u can reach that but certainly not with that accuracy or ease currently.

Great video! But... the first joint at his fingertips often collapses, denting inward, which is not the most efficient! Keeping the first finger joint strong rather than letting it collapse will allow you to get better tone out of a piano that has strings, and will allow you to eventually play faster and more efficiently!

That might seem a joke, but it's a serious question: I'm a beginner and I feel that my fingertips are too thick to be positioned in between the black keys. I often hit wrong notes trying to do so. Is there anything I could do to solve that, like put my fingers a little bit down on the keyboard or it's something expected for beginner and time will handle that automatically? Thank you.
@joshuagarcia7501
@joshuagarcia7501 Ай бұрын
Marcelo! - it’s simple! Play the white keys almost to the bottom of them, far from the black keys. When you need to play a black key simply move up a bit. Time and practice will solve this automatically yes! But it’s good to know how to target it so that it becomes faster to solve.
