I agree with her here, but not all the time. Sometimes she was over the top. That's why James faked his death, moved to Queens, Changed his name, got another family, opened up a chain of McDowell restaurants, and lived a rich life! Now look at him, his new daughter is the Queen of Zamunda!

This was a very sad episode. This was one of those episodes right after James had just died. As I recall Bookman warned the Evans family that they have less than one week to come up with the rent money, (which of course was a high amount), otherwise eviction would be imminent. So JJ tried EVERYTHING he could to come up with the money. But when he ran into some old high school buddies that's when things took a turn and J.J. felt that was the only way out. His intentions where genuine but going down the wrong path. Also instead of purchasing all those expensive items, he should have just paid the rent and bills up to date while still trying to find legal employment.

FACTS. Florida should have slapped Michael's ass for gettng mad at JJ for getting robbed at gun point. JJ had gotten shot by Mad Dog and he wasn't going to risk getting shot again and possibly killed. He was under alot of pressure being the oldest siblings. He lost his job had to wait for his unemployment benefits and Bookman waited until the last minute to inform the family about over due rent shortly after James' unexpected passing. I do understand Florida wanting to live a spiritual life but JJ had to do what he had to do to prevent the family from becoming homeless. I agree with you about JJ's spending. He should have paid the rent and bills and saved his money while waiting to receive his unemployment benefits and looking for a legit job. Everyone would have benefited

@@MUSICENCYLOPEDIA No one benefits dealing with trouble. No way was JJ going to stay legit once he got that amount of money and paid the rent. You see he kept going back until he was found out and eventually put out his home. Florida taught her children the value of contentment but sometimes grownups eyes get wide when they see a lot of money and they want it right now no matter the consequences. JJ didn’t think about the consequences of getting quick money so he had to learn the hard way🤷🏽‍♀️
@MUSICENCYLOPEDIA
@MUSICENCYLOPEDIA 2 жыл бұрын
@@SouthSideLadyWright I'm aware of that. It's true that Florida did teach her children about values and the importance of doing things the right but she also taught them about being comtent but when she learned that JJ was getting his money illegally she started to return to her religious roots and put him out. JJ wasn't informed about the drugs and prostitution until the cops came. He did learn the hard way and I see both Florida's and JJ"s point. Florida didn't like him being in numbers running due to her fearing that he would've wounded up in jail or dead and JJ had lost his job, was waiting to get his unemployment benefits and got robbed and with him being the eldest son he had lots of pressure of making sure that his mother and siblings had a roof over his head so he had to do what he had to do. Plus Thelma was working and going to school and she was willing to take a break from school to help with the finances

Her message in this scene was correct and as relevant as ever, her passion was genuine, and her anger was real. Ester channeled that anger into her role. The show was coming apart at the seams. John Amos had become too out spoken for the producers and had been fired. Unlike now, shows back then lived or died by their ratings. And there was only so much preaching that the target demographic (the ones that pay the bills) were going to tolerate. The show had always been funny and edgy for the time, but it took on a darker, more harsh tone for the rest of it’s run. And that was largely because Ester wanted to honor her contract, but absolutely did not agree with the decision to fire Amos. In the end, even he was sorry that he had forced the producers’ hand…big paycheck that he talked himself out of.
@rodneytruitt9566
@rodneytruitt9566 2 жыл бұрын
J.H. The ratings declined because Mr. Amos (the strongest Black father figure on TV at the time) was fired. For what? Because he felt the character of JJ could be funny and relevant without the buffoon-ery..a thing most Black shows (comedies especially) had a lot of. Mr. Amos' absence resonated negatively with the target market in the episodes that followed, so Mr. Lear directed at Mrs. Rolle's (I didn't spell that correctly..my bad) suggestion that her character take up the strong Black character arch. The problem was that there hadn't been a powerful Black female role either since Diane Carol in the 60's and Mrs. Carol's role was not a comedic offering. Mr. Amos regretted leaving the show but not primarily because of the loss of income...it was also because of the loss of the strong Black father-mother image on prime time television. And it certainly had nothing to do with the fact that the show consistently dealt with relevant contemporary issues in the Black community at the time "preachy" or otherwise.

false. America's setup was the reason. jobs not hiring or laying James off was the reason. Same with J.J. They could've gotten money a few times due to some illegal stuff, but so could jj be shot for revenge or rivalry. so could the mother and other family members be hurt for the same. cops who were already terrozinf the area eyeing them more often. enemies within the community from what they were doing. not every criminal is successful and most criminals don't even leave their area so basically its not worth the risk in most cases. people really aren't understanding the street elements

This is why James died. That family had multiple opportunities to get out of that piece of crap ghetto, but Florida's sanctimonious bullshit kept them in that shithole. The only reason that family left the ghetto was simply to have a happy ending to the series. JJ said it best @ 4:05. You have to do what you have to do to better your life, but that was never good enough for precious Florida, and even James. The only difference between those two is James used fear and/or brute violence to make his point. Those two would have been better off not having kids until they got out of the ghetto aka legal shithole.
