The Norman Lear Effect

Жыл бұрын

Thelma (BernNadette Stanis) is engaged, but James and Florida (John Amos and Esther Rolle) don't take the news too well. Surprisingly, J.J. (Jimmie Walker) is the only one siding with his sister.
From Season 3, Episode 4 'Love in the Ghetto': Thelma gets engaged to Larry and is hesitant to tell her parents. When she does, Florida and James do not approve.

JJ was always scared shittly of his father but this is one of the few times I seen him stand his ground against James, feel confident in what he said and the points he made, and defended his sister without disrespecting anyone. He even acknowledged that his fathers points were valid because he is head of the household but still defended his sister. I thought that was beautiful.

It takes a wise parent to witness what has been taught thru word and example...if your parents say stand up for what u believe in... they do it And he did. But parents don't like to be challenged not realizing that the best road test before going out into society. If u can respectfully agree to disagree with your parents u have the backbone to stand and not back down... parents gotta remember children will disagree at times and it's ok... His thoughts and ideas were different that doesn't mean he was disrespectful. I speak from EXPERIENCE. IF U ARE NOT ALLOWED TO VOICE YOUR MIND AT THE HOUSE U WILL NOT DO IT IN THE WORLD. IM JUST SAYING.... IT LEARNING THE BALANCE.. NO ONE IS A CLONE.

You know that most people would have been PROUD to have a father like that! In the episode that he died in and afterwards, the true importance of his absence was felt. What we in society have now are mentally LAZY people with broke morals, broke education, and quite literally, no ambition or desire to better themselves. It just proves the old saying, "those who ignore their history are doomed to repeat it."

How many times has Thelma been engaged? At least 4 times: 1. To an old guy "Donald," whom she dumped and gave back the engagement ring, after she realized she could not say "I love you" to him. 2. This guy "Larry," the car mechanic whom she dumped because she lost interest and did not want to move with him to California. 3. A Nigerian guy "Ebe" in college with whom she wanted to move to Nigeria -- she dumped him after he could not promise her he would not take more wives. 4. Her eventual husband, "Keith." *Any more I missed?* She was on the verge of being engaged to a jailed bigamist called "Lloyd" before JJ saved her....That girl falls in love fast!

Why would it need to be remade? There are more opportunities for people of all races today. Would you want to see a show about a poor white family in the ghetto?
