This is why they terminated the contract with Amos. He wanted a comedic show but with a serious confrontation with social subjects. But already in the 70s producers had a preference for clown acting and catchphrases, so they gave more and more room to Walker.

@angel johnson the problems come later . shes 17 for goodness sakes. when she sees her young friends enjoying themselves. going out with boyfriends, going to work and other platforms of learning, or doin other things shell wonder why she married. shell regret why she didint listnen to her parents. an older man cant always do the things a 17 year old wants an d does. hell also be jealous a younger man will steal her away. A father knows these things. he s only protecting his baby girl.

James Evans is what a man supposed to be, loves his family, does what it takes to make sure they are provided for, corrects them when they screw up. Looking back on it now I thought of him as a role model.

John amos left because he was tired of the dynomite and the chicken hat. That's what he says in an interview. John amos made this show, without him it just wasn't the same. Esther rolle was ok in lead, she wasn't john amos though.

My fiance was 17 years younger than me. She was 29 and I was 46. She fancied older men, and so did her mom. Her dad was 20 years older than her mother. @@andremack6041 Yeah, JJ was funny when he clowned, but they took it too far and John Amos had enough of it (Esther Rolle did, too, and she left for a while, only to return right at the end). I liked laughing at JJ's antics and the shade he and Thelma threw at each other, but it always bugged me that they had him playing Boo Boo the Fool instead of getting real with his artistry and getting an apprenticeship while going to school to ease the burden for his family.

The show lost its energy a lot when they killed off James Evans Sr. Producers bit their noses off despite their faces. Having a strong father presence on a black tv show was great to see. As a kid, I stopped watching after the first few episodes after James’ death because it was no longer the same show. John Amos is an amazing actor

The show ended up failing horribly later after he left I heard and the same from Sanford and son. I wasn't born during it but I watched it later in the 80's as a young kid with my pops.

Norman Lear's shows had the opposite effect that he was trying to create. The problem with John Amos is that he had this idea that he would know how to play a black father better than the white writers on the show 🤔.

Not the belting. i dont like that. but they were a strong family. Then next one i love is james avery , Uncle phil of FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR.
