Fun fact: The little old lady who played Tommy's mom was actually Mama Scorsese. She has been in several of his films, including "Mean Streets,'' ''New York, New York,'' ''Cape Fear,'' ''Casino'' and ''Desperately Seeking Susan.'' She was a central figure in Mr. Scorsese's 1974 documentary ''Italianamerican.'' IMHO, every Scorsese film is impeccably scored. I got the soundtrack for this film right after I saw it at the theater. At the time I was driving a cab in Austin at night and my passengers LOVED it. A few years later I moved to NYC and drove a gypsy for a short while and it was my soundtrack most nights. There has always been, and will always be, those who have no line, no regard for life, human or otherwise.

What I loved about this movie over other "gangster" films was, it didn't romanticize what it was like, like in The Godfather for instance. The truth is these were terrible people who looked at hard working, honest people as chumps.They were/are the bottom feeders on humanity.

Exactly. All blue collar and 9 to 5 workers that the crew interact with in the film always get screwed over in some way

It's also what robs it of it's cinematic potential. Everyone gets The Godfather wrong. If you read the original novel, Puzo emphasizes that Vito is not like the other mob bosses. He truly was different from the rest by genuinely valuing family, honor, and loyalty. He was genuinely forgiving and empathetic. The novel makes it clear the reason the story you're reading is focusing on a mafia boss is because he is not your typical mob boss. That's why Vito is so fascinating and possesses his own gravitational pull- he actually is a noble man in an innoble business.

Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and Jimmy Burke (De Niro) were also involved in a point shaving scandal at Boston College. Mike Mayok, whos the former GM of the Raiders, and former NFL draft analyst, was roommates with the basketball player that was involved. There was a ESPN documentary sbout it.

Joe Pesci is palying a character based on Tommy DiSimmone, who while being as insane as he's being portrayed here, was actually a very large guy. like 6'6 240. Wasn't short man syndrome lol.

Another reason I think Tommy was so wild was that they always allowed him too. They used him to be a menace in that restaurant to purposely get that guy in a position to need Paulies protection. Wild guys like that are usually going to be used by an organization as trigger finger throwaways. Paulie and the big shots might’ve planned to get rid of him themselves one day. There’s no telling in that life, how many times different people in the same group planned or at least considered killing each other.

This is beyond a merely great movie. It is one of Scorcese's masterpieces and one of the ten best films of the 1990s. It is a brilliant examination of violence and the effects that it has both on the structures of the mob and in society. It doesn't glorify the violence but shows how it degraded the lives of those involved. No one comes to a good ending. It's death, jail or exile. Also I love how the pace of the film picks up between the 1960s through the 1980s as the drugs become involved and it eats away at the fabric of their lives and the organization. It's a lovely parallel to what was happening in the whole society at the time. This movie is mostly accurate as it is taken from the memories of of Henry Hill, who went into witness protection and ratted out all the people in this movie. The Tommy character is actually toned down from real life as he was a much scarier sociopath than portrayed by Joe Pesci. He was huge in real life and committed atrocities in many people. And the description of the La Guardia heist is dead accurate. Also I heard you mention Dearborn, Mi. That was my hometown growing up in the 1960s and 1970s and I can attest to your analysis of living there. I remember the Dearborn Police having M-16s during the 1967 uprising courtesy of the mayor's connections with the FBI. My best friends dad was a Wayne County Commissioner at the time and ex U.S. Congressman and told me the story of that when I was in college.

I agree that it is a Scorcese masterpiece and the best gangster movie ever made. But I don't think it's his best gangster project. That goes to another Scorcese title. Boardwalk Empire. If you haven't seen it, you really need to. 5 seasons on HBO that ended in 2014. It starts on New Years Eve the night before prohibition starts. The main character was a little known gangster, Knucky Thompson who ran Atlantic City. It shows all the famous mobster's as up and coming young thugs.. The ONLY fault I can find with it is the dude that plays Al Capone is way to short. He is perfect for him in every other way but Capone was 5'10" and this dude looks about 5'4". LOL
@donpietruk1517
@donpietruk1517 Жыл бұрын
@@boki1693 I saw Boardwalk Empire and it's absolutely wonderful but I was really concentrating only on films in my comments Films and TV projects are inherently different mediums. A long term series allows for a story to breathe more and develop. I think film is inherently harder and more complex in story telling terms. You have a limited time to convey your message and impact. That's why I always have more respect for masterful films than TV series and I also prefer films on the screen for visuals and the way that the cinematography impacts the story. That's a whole nother reason Scorcese is a master filmmaker in my eyes. But I tend to love Scorcese's work no matter the media used.
@boki1693

@@donpietruk1517 I agree. The only reason I bring Boardwalk up is because people rarely mention it and it is just so good. Especially if your into this type of movie.

Great intelligent commentary throughout, as usual. Love that you know so much about the history of NYC during this time. I love the hard boiled realism of these 70s directors, warts and all. I'll tell you the Scorsese movie I'm dying for your opinion of: "The King Of Comedy" (starring....who else....Robert De Niro!). It's hard to describe. Satirical drama? One of a kind movie, I think you'll have lots to say about that one. Also 1976's "Network" or 1975's "Dog Day Afternoon", both directed by Sidney Lumet. Would LOVE your thoughts on "Network"! Scorsese's "Raging Bull" you'd probably have alot of great stuff to say about that one as well. De Niro and Scorsese made "Raging Bull" then "King Of Comedy" back to back, and two more different characters/movies you'd be hard pressed to find! Anyways, happy you got this one under your belt! Damn good movie!

Great reaction as always Sir. I love the film. I would recomend Casino next. Some of the same actors , and based on a true story by the writer of Goodfellas.(The book was called Wiseguy. By Nicholas Pileggi) And of course MS directing. Fun fact- The person that played the WITSEC agent Hennry and Karen talked to was the real life agent that got them into the program. Also , some real NY Mobsters were also cast in the film. You should also watch The Sopranos series for the channel. Amazing Mafia show. Many actors from Goodfellas were in it.

@robrandall2993 If you were asking me , I would say they are both equal. Different stories about the Mafia. Goodfellas was from 2 main perspectives. Karen and Hennry Hill , and their life being involved with the Mafia. While Casino was from many different perspectives , and took place over the course of only a fewish years , and a different side of the Mafia. I HIGHLY recomend you read both books for the best perspective.

The best Goodfellas commentary is with Hennry Hill , and Ed McDonald. The cast one , not that great. Casino is a very good one also. Always cool nuggets of real information. Enjoy: ]

Tommy was the only one who COULD get made, because all of the others were only part Italian, and they required you to be full blood Italian. They whacked him there, because it was where he would feel safe. Like the wife, he could have gotten a bad vibe and noped out of some other situation, but there was no way he was going to nope out of being made.

I know you love to talk over...but you completely missed one of the most epic shots in cinema history. I'm assuming you missed it, maybe you covered it in your longer video. The other epic shot was the bar scene where Jimmy decides to kill Morty. Without dialogue, only smoking his cigarette, and slightly narrowing his eyes, you can see him come to his decision. Then the Cream song Sunshine of Our Love blasts over the scene. It's chilling, brilliantly acted, and masterfully directed.

He used to be in one of the 5 crime families in New York and knew a lot of the people in this movie, his name was even dropped at the start of the movie. He now makes videos on youtube, talking about what it was like to live in that life and why it shouldnt be glorified. And he also reviews some mob movies, including Goodfellas. His explaination of some of the real life people like Henry and Tommy gave this movie a lot more dept to me.

on my mob crime kick a few years ago i read a few books. there was one by the guy who invented the witness protection program, and it goes into what hiding these guys is like, how stupid they are. another one was from an undercover cop who went into the day-to-day of sitting around with other guys thinking up scams. this movie is fun because it shows the few triumphs amongst the mostly-shitty parts of this life.

I understand about not letting something someone says cause you to get out of character,, but what if the non violent persona a person has is NOT their true character? Then when someone says something to cause them to get out of character, what's really happening is that person is now able to show their true character. I think that's what happened with Henry and the guy he beat up. He looks forward to those kinds of opportunities. I think protecting someone like Henry Hill is not about rewarding him for turning on his associates. I think it's more about encouraging others to turn on their associates so they can lock up the Paulies of this world. Cut off the head and the body dies, I think that's the idea. A guy like Henry is a hand, maybe just a finger, not the head.

I only feel bad for the lions when they eat someone because it must have been hungry and miserable. If you ever see the documentary about the two guys who raised a cub and released it you will understand. After years of being in the wild and accepted into a pride the lion came running and hugged them and gave kisses from head to toe. It's much different than those people in Dubai obviously. The men in the documentary saved the cub after it's mother was killed and it was denied by pride because sometimes none of the females will adopt.
