The idiot also didnt read the book beforee making the movie cuz he found it "boring" and mistook the Terran federation for a fascistic, warmongering nation-state when its actually the exact opposite. I still like the movie , most of it is not really affected by Verhoevens pathetic work-ethic or personal political biases. But as a director, he seriously fakked up on this one.

He also said that this was about fascism ... and completely fails to understand what fascism really is (which the society in Starship Troopers ISNT). He never even read the book and just went with "this is what other people have said it's about". The guy writing the script didnt read the book either, all they got was a plot synopsis to roughly follow the story.

@@Muck006 It's not a direct adaptation of the book; he's presenting his own opinions on society, warfare and fascism. The movie is pretty much the opposite of the book in terms of ideology, and that's not by mistake. If you thought the book was great, the movie is not for you lol

In the book the guy that signed them up with no legs was plainly visible BEFORE they signed up. He was there to discourage people that were not SURE they wanted to join. Later in the day, Rico sees him walking down the sidewalk and asks him about it. He was chosen specifically because of his lack of legs to act as a 'filter'. They had almost perfect prosthetics, but he did not use them for that job. The book is very interesting and I would suggesting picking up a copy and reading it. It is a quick read and feels very different than the movie.

also - in the book they mention that the only way you could be stopped from attempting to complete a term of service was if a doctor certified you were physically incapable of understanding the oath. Even if you showed up in a wheelchair and wanted to enlist, they'd find you something to do. The catch was that everyone gets only one chance, and if you quit (which you can do at any time), you can't try again.

While the movie uses some of the same events as the book, the movie uses the to make a very different point. The movie doesn't dive into the theory of the society because it is a satire of modern capitalistic war. The viewer already has a reference to wounded veterans. Verhoeven simply contrasts this with the beautiful recruits going in, which is a different goal than the book reinforcing that something given has no value and the need to make potential citizens earn the power to vote.

In the film, he was there to inform the audience that military service creates broken people (hence the missing limbs on the Teacher as well as other older veterans). Military Service has done nothing positive in these people's lives: only made them loyal to a fascist world government.

I would also comment on how the Mobile Infantry in the book used Mechanized Suits, (which you finally see in the third movie), as human legs do not tend toward a 'Mobile' Infantry. The book is a very quick read, although there are some sexist tendencies, as the MI are all male, while the Navy are all female, as the females are better at the complex math needed to fly the ships, while the men are better at just fighting and dying. Also, a single squad tended to cap out around a dozen soldiers, and their drop pod technology was also well thought out. I think that my favorite idea from the book, besides the Mechanized Suits, were the Talking Bombs. Imagine a bomb, dropped into a populated center, speaking in the population's language, saying, "I am a bomb, I will explode in 1 minute. I am a bomb, I will explode in 55 seconds...." It did the job of causing panic, which is far more important than killing civilians. (It was used against another 'enemy', not the bugs, in the book.

The movie is a classic but the book is amazing. It was written in the 1950’s and the author predicted heads up displays, powered armor suits and a bunch of stuff we take for granted in sci fi today amongst other things. There’s also a second alien race in the book and Rico flamethrowers a bunch of the alien children. It’s wild. Also the book is required reading for the officer school in the Marines. It goes more into the politics and military structure as the author was in the Navy if I remember correctly.

To be fair, the movie is kind of a satirization of the kind of society depicted in the book more than it is a faithful adaptation. The intent was to make the kind of propaganda film that'd be put out in such a society, down to mimicking elements of WWII German films. It really went over a lot of people's heads. I remember at the time most of my friends were complaining about how it was nothing like the book. And missed that the main premise is a critique of this slightly democratic totalitarian society that fetishizes the military while playing the victim in a war they started themselves. Service guarantees citizenship and voting rights because service guarantees indoctrination. And it's such a downer for the main characters, too. And because Verhoeven's not a hack, you can miss all that and still enjoy the movie because it's still a great action flick. Just like Robocop and Total Recall, it's a good movie on the surface level and then there are depths to explore if you want.

I grew up the exact same way but it was not HALO that mirrored this movie. It was a game called, *"Earth Defense Force."* It was just as campy, had literally over 200 bugs on screen at a time and if you were not a good enough tactician the bugs would kill all the NPCs in your squad mere seconds after each level starts. There are two made for video live action sequels, a series of animated stories (Roughnecks) and then a couple more animated films. The film version of Starship Troopers is essentially the Dr Strangelove for our generation. The circle will complete some years into the future when this is looked on as a sort of documentary- right now we say 'it couldn't happen here'... oh, but it has, and it can again.
@yodieyuh
@yodieyuh Жыл бұрын
I don't find that comparison too valid. There was no Russian attack; there was a bug attack. Ripper forced US soldiers to kill US soldiers; the bugs are never humanized. Ripper acted on a belief of a conspiracy theory he had no proof of; Troopers shows us the enemy is real. Ripper killed himself to escape responsibility; the Sky Marshall publicly resigned and accepted responsibility. World ended in nuclear annihilation; world still a utopia. Etc. Citizens can vote. Citizens can get a birth license easier. Those are the drawbacks. No poverty, no sexism, no racism, no resource scarcity, no protests, no dictator, etc. Unedited frontline war reporting, military leaders being publicly held accountable, volunteer military, wealthy civilians owning property and businesses, etc. The bugs are never humanized. Strangelove and Robocop are top notch satires. Starship Troopers is an extremely weak satire.
@nerodia
@nerodia Жыл бұрын
@@yodieyuh i think there's subtlety to the satire in Starship Troopers, while it was pretty blunt in Robocop and even more so in Strangelove. I do agree with you about it and Strangelove not being the same kind of film. The presentation of ST intentionally gives a very sanitized view of Federation society, with just mild matter-of-fact mentions of the differences that, when stacked together, paint a picture of a two-classed society where your opinions and human rights just don't matter as much if you haven't given a chunk of your prime years to the state. The veterans couped the democracy and made everything better for everyone - that's what's taught in the schools run by, well, veterans. "Something given has no value" is one of those statements that you might find yourself nodding along with till you realize the context is a denial of self-determination to non-citizens. You were given life, therefore you're worthless till you earn your worth.
@yodieyuh
@yodieyuh Жыл бұрын
@@nerodia I agree it demonstrates a two class society, but I fail to see how the lower class suffers. Making voting an earned privilege is more authoritarian than everyone can vote, sure. But the film doesn't make that bad. Can't vote, but we aren't shown legislation they didn't vote for that makes their lives worse than a Citizen besides a single mention that both classes have to obtain birthing licenses and it's some degree easier if you served. On all other levels they seem equal. The civilians we hear the most from, Rico's parents, are wealthy property and business owners who can leave the planet. They tell us their opinion of Citizenship is that it's not worth much. They're almost appalled that he even considers citizenship. I love the film, but it really seems to be about killing space bugs that kill us. We might be the instigators, by giving so much religious freedom we let Mormons settle planets.

The man taking the paperwork with no legs... he is there on purpose. Specifically to discourage those who aren't up for this. In the book it's explained more that no one can be denied thier right to do federal service and earn citizenship. So they actually discourage people from joining, as Rico mentioned, because they are required to find a job for you if you join. In the novel Carmen is not Ricos girlfriend, but they added it to make it easier to understand why Rico joined. They put a cripple at the front desk to discourage people joining the army, because they only want those who are really sure about that decision. The attack also seems a little stupid in the movie. In the book they bombard the planet for a couple of days(?) before they land. And the mobile infantry is more like mechwarriors who can easily destroy tanks and everything, and of course they send those too. However, even though it's not true to the novel, it's a fun adaptation.

I quickly got into the groove, laughing out loud at the ridiculousness and snark, while the rest of the theater was silent--unsure what to do. By the end of the movie, everyone was laughing out loud (TBH, there were only 6-7 people at that showing).

I remember when this came out. I was 15 and a guy on my swim team and I were talking about it. Of course, only a few scenes in this movie were important to us. It was rated 14A here in Canada, so of course, every teen guy had seen it. No joke, that's what we had to do back then if we wanted to see certain things that straight guys of that age are interested in. We couldn't just go online and we definitely didn't care if the movie had "social commentary." Very few of the kids I knew in '97 had the internet in their rooms, let alone their homes and if we saw anything online, we had to download it and end up with a lot of viruses. Not saying I know from experience. That poor, poor Pentium 3 450.

I remember watching this movie when I worked at Century Theatres, Then about a week after playing the game *"Earth Defense Force."* It was just as campy, had literally *over 200 bugs* on screen at a time and if you were not a good enough tactician the bugs would kill all the NPCs in your squad mere seconds after each level starts. It mirrored *"Starship Troopers"* exactly. And if you fought as good as Johnny Rico did your squad would shout random phrases along with "EDF, EDF, EDF!!!" Good times. ^_^

In basic training at the grenade range, we had a guy that for some reason threw his grenade right in front of my bunker. The kid in my bunker, preparing to throw, just got his pin out when the grenade hit. The sergeant with him pushed him to the ground and jumped on top of him, taking shrapnel in his neck. While they were tending to the sergeants neck they didn’t realize my buddy still had his live made with no pin. Finally they found him in the fetal position holding the spoon down with everything he had.they cleared the range and he was able to throw his grenade. But it could have been much worse. That training scene always reminds me of that.

One of those things that isn’t explicitly stated in the films but is mentioned in the book this is loosely based on. The federation prior to the big war has too many recruits for the infantry and not enough roles for them. They’ll do whatever they can to psych out and make people quit. They won’t force you to quit but they will definitely encourage you to do so. This is why the guy at the recruitment center is a triple amputee and why the drill sergeant breaks arms and throws knives into hands. They want you to quit.
@stevensauer8539

Yeah, but in the book the drill sergeants don't do that. They'd be in serious trouble if they did that. That's solely an exaggerated Verhoeven thing.

In the Federation you are not born a citizen but if you want to become a citizen you must perform federal service its usually back breaking or unpleasant work for a couple years but it will always have some form of personal risk to it. The federation MUST find something for someone to do they may try to dissuade an individual but they cant turn them down. The idea behind this is one must have some stake in society and show they are willing to suffer for the betterment of society before they have a say in how its run. Non citizens are not mistreated either they have all rights but the right to vote or hold public office. It is essentially a harsh but fair meritocracy based republic.

So in the book, it's described the specifically put guys like that at the desk to stamp papers. Because it's the last chance for a potential recruit to change their mind before heading to training. Even once in training, they're free to leave at any time. They do a lot of subtle and overt things to discourage people who aren't really commited from joining. They only want people who are serious about it. But, once they're in, the law (in-universe) states they _have_ to find a job for you to do. No one is turned away regardless of aptitude.

The 'lava' spraying bug wasn't so very far off from reality. Here on Earth the, thankfully very small, Bombardier beetle can spray a boiling, corrosive liquid from their rear end to deter predators. There is also an ant from Malaysia that can explode suicidally and aggressively in defense of its colony, proper name: Colobopsis saundersi. Life is weird.

I hope you know it is based upon Robert Heinlein's book. You definitely should read Heinlein's works. He served in the US army. Very very important and great books written by him : The Moon Is A Harsh mistress, Stranger In A Strangeland, only to name these. Ah ! My favorite quote from Starship Troopers, the book : "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

It was huge when it came out. The movie was a phenomenon :) A clear satire of the book, that was actually taking itself very seriously. And the whole idea behind "Mobile Infantry" in the book was a small, super powered. extra smart mechanical infantry of mass destruction. And Rico was Puerto Rican :) But the film just mixed everything right. A movie I'll always have a blast watching. Team Dizzy!

A bit of trivia for you, this movie was based on the novel "Starship Troopers" written by Robert Heinlein in 1959. There's another novel written much more recently called Armor by John Steakly that is very much like this. John Steakley is the guy who wrote the book Vampires which the film Vampires starring James Woods was based on.
