It was all a work. It’s called “busting”. A couple of mobster (Tommy in this case) start making trouble in a business that might be a bit shady. The owner can’t go to the cops so he goes to the mob on the suggestion of anther mobster that is a regular and pretends to be sympathetic (Henry), but is in on the whole plan. The mob (paulie) reluctantly decides to help the business out by becoming a partner. Eventually the mob takes over the business forcing the owner out (one way or anther). After a period when the business doesn’t make the mob enough money or gets to much heat from the illegal activities that are being run there, it gets torched and the mob collects the insurance money (Tommy and Henry burn the place later in the film).
@jaelge3 жыл бұрын
@@CamaroAmx: Exactly. You paint a perfect example.
@CamaroAmx3 жыл бұрын
@@jaelge anther example that paulie was playing the guy is the fact that paulie owns a dinner early in the film (when Henry is a kid and a guy goes to the dinner cause he got shot). It’s the same dinner Henry meets paulie in to beg forgiveness near the end of the film. Plus during the meeting with paulie and the owner you can see paulie giving looks to Henry and then Henry gives his line, like everything they are doing is scripted and paulie is subtly giving Henry his cue.

One of the best extortion scenes ever. I didn't get that the first time I saw it. Tommy and Henry had probably been working Sonny for months, Tommy intimidating him and Henry gaining his confidence. All just to drive Sonny to Pauli, who was waiting patiently to take over the restaurant. Sorvino was terrific in this scene. Those side looks toward Henry -- priceless. And that line, "It's not even fair." Again, priceless.

I have seen this movie probably 500 times since I was a kid and I still didn’t get that. It’s brilliant, wow. Tommy scares the shit out of him, and Henry guided him right to Paulie. Freaken awesome.
@Astrobrant22 жыл бұрын
@@GeddyRC Yep. In movies we usually see blatant examples of "protection" (extortion) rackets, like gangsters going to collect cash from helpless shopkeepers who know their store will get trashed if they don't pay up. But this one was SO much more sophisticated and subtle. Poor Sonny went straight to the guy who was actually the _cause_ of his problems with Tommy, and begged him for help. Those two scenes, alone, make the movie worth watching. Watch again for when Paulie says, "It's not even fair." This time you might laugh your ass off. Paulie had probably been patiently waiting for months for Sonny to come begging for help. Yeah, Paulie, you bet! It sure _isn't_ fair! LOL Edit: If I was Henry, I would not have wanted to be in the room when Paulie did this to Sonny. I would have had a hard time keeping a straight face watching Paulie pull off that brilliant con.

I never realized this, that just blew my mind and makes the whole "bust out" arc come into perspective. Looking at it now, Sonny even says Tommy is an Arch Criminal, he looks over both shoulders leaving the house in the morning. I initially thought maybe Tommy was just a maniac, and Henry and Paulie made a play off Tommy's "Cowboy-itis". Now Im thinking he may have masterminded the whole con and played his part so genuinely that Henry and Paulie could easily reel in the fish. I have an even deeper respect for this movie and Scorsese after this.

In Wiseguy, the book on which this movie was based, it talks about how Tommy and Henry were supposed to go into these restaurants and cause as much of a ruckus and as much trouble as possible. Hence when Tommy says to Henry in the restaurant "you're supposed to be doing this stuff too, y'know". They would thereby drive the owner to seek protection from Paulie Vario who was the Lucchese capo in that area at that time. In exchage for protection Paulie gets part ownership of the restaurant, then squeezes money from them, extending their line of credit to obtain (and sell) what is to them, free merchandise. Finally they burn the restaurant and keep the insurance money. The owner had no obligation to Paulie until he came to Paulie to seek protection, and his actions were induced by the actions of Henry and Tommy among others, actions Paulie himself had suggested they engage in. The book is excellent and I would highly recommend it.

The mob shows and movies almost always make me instantly hungry for Italian food. (Especially when Tony Soprano was eating.) Homestyle, just the way Mama Mia use to cook it in the old country.

In all honesty Paulie could have gotten Tommy to back off but he wanted a piece of the business. That or he wanted to extort the business. And while on the subject, I wouldn't be surprised if Paulie told Tommy to threaten this guy. That's how the mafia worked in extortion.

@robertthomas26017 жыл бұрын
Brutal. And, I don't doubt it. Paulie probably just told Tommy to run up a tab there and not pay it back, knowing the restaurant owner would eventually come to Paulie about it. Hook, line, and sinker. Tommy giving the owner all that shit he did was probably just Tommy being Tommy. If the guy starts to get scared, sells the restaurant to some outsider and leaves town, everyone loses.
@maven217 жыл бұрын
Agreed, he said what do I know about the restaurant business. He didn't say no. He wants the guy to say I will do all the work and you can just sit back and get paid. Funny thing the resturant guy seemed to know it too that it was a hustle.So he said hey you know the chef "translation - he does the work". "Henry comes in all the time" translation - just need someone to oversee the place.

This is exactly how it was, kiddies. True to life. Back in the day. If you were a schnook, you got taken. Paulie can't believe his luck. He plays him like an accordion. Some very authentic acting here. Played to perfection. I've watched this scene a lots times and you just can't find any flaws in the interpretation. Pretty much perfect. The only other mob flick that was balls on perfect was Donnie Brasco. They nailed it cold. Mainly because it showed the FBI as they really are. Pretty.much idiots.
