Also, the REAL Tommy was well-known between crews. He was actually good friends with Gambino soldier Foxy Jerothe, who was an early friend of John Gotti. The two of them got into a fight over a girl and Tommy killed him. He was known for being an unhinged killer, only getting away with it because his victims were not formally made into any crews, sans Billy Batts. Thats why the narration says that Tommy's hit was punishment for Billy Batts, "and a lot of other things, too."

Nicky's sixth sense was so suspicious about everything around him that they indeed had to invent the story as if they're gonna make him. Otherwise, and for no other reason, Nicky would have never let anyone take him to such a dodgy place where he can get killed. That's why he figured out his death had come a split second before the bullet hit his skull - he just looked at the place and realized something is wrong. And for the guys like Nicky "something is wrong" means imminent death.

I guess there was no other way to resolve the situation. Tommy killed a MADE guy from ANOTHER family on a whim when he himself wasn't even made...and they said that Batts was a member of the Gambino family. From what I know of the background of these characters, Tommy and Co. ran with the Lucchesi family. Once they figured out it was Tommy who had whacked Batts, all the Gambinos probably had to say was "either you guys take care of this thing in-house or we're going to start a war," and given that Tommy had killed a made guy in flagrant violation of Mafia rules, it was pretty much an open and shut case. There was nothing to even argue over. The heads of the Lucchesi family probably thought "this little fuck has caused enough trouble for us. Let's be rid of him once and for all." Hell, if they hadn't, all the other families may have ganged up against them with the Gambinos in any potential war over this, given how big of a violation of core mafia rules this was. And the Lucchesis were probably only too happy to get rid if him. They weren't gonna go to all that trouble, let alone get into a war, for a hyper-aggressive non-member little punk bastard like Tommy. As Henry would say, "They'd rather whack'im," and given how much trouble he caused them, doing something that could have almost started a war between them and another family, as I said, the Lucchesis were probably only too happy to be rid of him.
@the-chillian10 жыл бұрын
The only think I'd complain about in your analysis is that the Lucchesis probably didn't think of Tommy as "little". The real Tommy was 6'2" and 225 lbs, a big enforcer type, not at all like Joe Pesci, who I think they cast because he could do a very good job at bringing out the violent psychopath nature of the man. It certainly wasn't for his physical resemblance.
@pimp9639 жыл бұрын
actrually in the real story the Gambinos found proof tommy did the hit and the Lucchesis basically just handed him over to John gotti who had him cut in half with a chain saw in the basement of Gottis club in queens.Billy batts was a close friend of john gotti and when proof was found John got his revenge in full.

Michael Carranza you never had to be. and they are all based around the same rules that's what makes it organized crime and that's why its the American mafia. all families same rules apply. if you read joe bonanno's book he talks about the different members and how America is a melting pot where basically they knew people weren't going to be fully Italian because that's how America works even from the start. so they set the plain rule. half with an Italian surname. even in the book this is based on henry hill states he couldn't get made because his father wasn't Italian.

Billy Batts's friends (the people who were standing at the bar with him just before the argument) probably told Billy's crew that there had been trouble with a guy named Tommy who was with Jimmy and Henry. Tommy had a reputation for being a wacko, so they just put 2 and 2 together. And nothing happened to Jimmy and Henry because the people who killed Tommy had to settle for just him, or start a big war with Paulie. After all, Jimmy and Henry were good "earners".

I have a question. How did the Gambino's know that Tommy whacked Billy Bats? I watched this movie multiple times, but it was never explained. Did Henry or Jimmy secretly tell the don?
@JohnCastello710 жыл бұрын
Speculation. Remember Billy's friends? His friends apparently didn't see them (Henry and Jimmy) as a threat after the little confrontation between Tommy and Billy, after the "shinebox" comment. They probably didnt see Henry as the murdering type, and thought Jimmy was too smart to whack him in that type of situation, but Tommy, yeah, that was right down his alley; being a hothead and all. He also offended many people.
@themysterybox967510 жыл бұрын
That seems like a reasonable explanation, but the Gambinos dont have any hard evidence for it happening. Then that leads to something else: a war between the Luchessees and the Gambinos now unless Paulie knew about what Tommy did or he gave the Gambinos the OK to whack Tommy off, but for other reasons. ( i read too much in movie plotholes :p)
@BeysHorseRadish10 жыл бұрын
TheMysteryBox96 The Gambinos knew Tommy and Jimmy were involved, so they went to Paulie and said someone's gotta go. I don't think anyone feels bad about Tommy getting whacked. Poetic justice appreciated.

"Don't paint anymore religious pictures please." "Be careful, God be with you." :'-( In Henry Hill's book 'A Goodfella's Guide to New York' which came out back in 2003 it was mentioned that Tommy's house located somewhere between Brooklyn & Queens was still standing.

You mean Henry Hill? Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family is a 1986 non-fiction book by crime reporter Nicholas Pileggi that chronicles the story of Mafia mobster-turned-informant Henry Hill. WIKI. So it was not Henry Hill who wrote the book.

@frecklefingers12 жыл бұрын
Because he noticed the room was empty. There should have been a lot of wise guys there to celebrate the ceremony. He probably didn't realize he's was getting shot, he just knew something wasn't right.

In broad terms, there are five Mafia groups, defined mainly by the regions they operate in or the regions they originated in. All five groups have their hands in criminal operations that span the globe and have set up operatives in many different nations. The Sicilian Mafia originated on the island of Sicily. The Camorra Mafia began in Naples, and the Calabrian Mafia originated in Italy's Calabrian region.
