@@lilynote2016 They're at basically any hardware store and you can also find them online pretty easy and cheap. They're basically L shaped pieces of metal with screw holes on each arm of the L to allow you to connect two items together at a 90 degree angle. Think of those wall shelves with the little metal pieces under to hold it up, those metal bits are L brackets. They come in all kinds of sizes for all kinds of uses. Super handy!

Another cute idea I’ve seen is to add 4-5 inch chunky chair legs to book cases that have been turned on their sides. It makes them look like a real piece of furniture and gets the bookcase off of the ground!

For future reference... When painting pieces like you bought you should lightly sand before painting and add something on top of the paint (poly, wax, etc) to protect your paint job so it will last longer. As is, you may find scuffing and peeling to be an issue with normal use.

Biglots for example I've seen a leather couch for 100-200 dollars. Far less all the other stuff she got. She basically wasted her money. Just fyi you can spraypaint new stuff to match also...

I'm genuinely jealous of that TV stand. That looks exactly like something that would fit with my aesthetic, and I've been looking to buy a similar new one for $400. If I found it for $100, I would jump on that. Nicely done. I did have a friend once who, after their divorce, furnished their whole new apartment using the free section of Craigslist and just paid the cost of the truck rental and gas. Yes, she did spend an entire day driving around the entire extended Portland Metro area, from Salem to Vancouver, WA, but in the end, she basically furnished her studio for $50. Which blew my mind.

For those of you afraid to buy used furniture because of bed bugs- remember that even library books can have bed bugs. They are all over, that’s why you inspect things before you bring them in the house (much like you look at a hat for lice before you try it on). Clean things well. Also look at the skin of the person you are buying from. Bed bugs leave marks on the skin, if they have nice clear arms and legs then you should be ok. 💖

Love your little challenge, and think you did great! My only caveat is one I learned the hard way...be careful, some of the stuff you might buy might be from a house infested with...bedbugs! Yes, bedbugs have made a major comeback. My best advice is for any smaller items like pillows or single chairs, put in a huge black trashbag and sit out in the sun for a few days. Bedbugs can't take the heat and will die if they are in 115 degrees. Or if its just a few pillows or some linens. throw them in the dryer. If its a couch, you might need a black tarp. But trust me, this technique works well! Of course, the best is if you don't buy anything infested....

The bookcase is super cute. I suggest buying some brushed gold legs to add to it. It'll tie to your gold lamp and gold handles on the side table plus give it a little more height. If you wanna go the extra mile to make it look even more custom...add a strip of reclaimed wood (have a friend cut to size) to the bottom then add the legs. Stain the wood a walnut color. $20 bucks max for a semi custom piece. Otherwise awesome job. DIY artwork next?🤔😬🤷🏾‍♀️

One word for you Rachel: Freecycle. I furnished my entire 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom, and 3 reception rooms with items I got for free on Freecycle. My budget was $500 and I spent $135. That $135 went on delivery fees because some items wouldn't have fit in my car, such as 3 large book cases, a vintage dining table and six chairs, 2x 3 seater sofas, a Smeg fridge-freezer (only 4 months old and free) and two large bed frames. I restored furniture items with paints (also free on Freecycle). With the left over cash I purchased a steam cleaner and some thrift store framed art.

Good for you! I’ve been desperately trying to teach my grandchildren the art of resale but they don’t seem to be learning. They seem to think everything is dirty; I know they’ve heard of soap and water but… can’t get that through their heads! As you go through Goodwill and Salvation Army just run through the pillows and feel them. You will find there are good quality feather and down inserts in some of the better quality pillows. All you have to do is rip the cover off and inserted it into the pillow cover of choice. For about $30 you can get four pillow covers on Amazon with handy-dandy zippers that you can slip your new insert into.

Good job! The livingroom looks cozy and inviting. I inherited my childhood home and originally was going to donate the furniture and buy new. Just not my style. Then I realized it was solid mahogany very well made furniture and there would be no way I could afford furniture of such high quality. So glad I kept it. I just added my own style with accessories and it looks great. I feel good about not discarding perfectly good furniture so I'm happy I came to my senses. Just needed more lights. A friend of mine was redecorating and gave me his gorgeous high quality lamps. Needed a coffee table because the legs were badly broken on the old one. The only coffee tables I saw that I liked were over 1000 dollars. No way! I had a dream one night and the next morning I took the marble top off the old coffee table and put it on my vintage piano bench which I spray painted black. It looks so beautiful! I like it better than the expensive ones I saw. I even had the spray paint in the garage. So I have spent zero dollars and my home looks great. I love what you did and really like the look. Very inspiring.

For artwork, some ideas are to hang a small pretty rug you find at the thrift store as a tapestry. Use leftover paint on a piece of flat cardboard to cover it complete in that green, and then use scrap wood from the hardware store (cheap or free) to make a frame. Or get a secondhand large coffee table book that has pictures you can pull out and put into frames.

I once picked up something upholstered and put it in the basement w/it enclosed in a clear garbage bag (hard to do w/big stuff) and then dowsed it w/a powder mix of baking soda and tea tree oil (Tea Tree can fade fabric so test it on a patch) and left it there- with the plastic bag tightly sealed w/tape - for 3 days. At the end of that time, I inspected the bag for any buggies and once I saw that there were none,. opened it up, vacuumed it off and set it in it's place.

Additional tips: If you purchase furniture in the winter, if possible leave it in your garage or under a covered area where it will reach freezing temps for 7 days. That should kill the bugs plus help air out any smells from previous owners. Hard furniture should be fine with a good hot + soapy water scrub, but if you want to be super safe you can spray the nooks and crannies as well. Also, bedbugs don’t handle heat well so if you bring in a bed or couch and find it infested, you only have to throw the linens, blankets, etc. in the dryer on the highest heat setting possible for a couple of cycles. This will kill any bedbugs that may be on them. Be sure to treat the furniture as well with a bedbug trap or diatomaceous earth.

I live for this type of person. I finally started making enough money that I can just GIVE my old furniture away to friends in need. Just before this, I would have "pay what you can" online yard sales. I'd take pics and offer them to my friends. The only catch being that I wouldn't deliver items. Rather than me having to try to haggle over selling it. The time and stress of haggling isn't worth it for me.

You're more likely to get bed bugs from a library book or a dresser actually. 90% of all bedbugs live in the 5ft space AROUND the bed. They don't live inside of fabrics, they are flat bugs so they live in cracks like those in dresser drawers or even between book pages. For fabrics all it takes is a shampooer that has hot water to get rid of anything yucky and a quick visual inspection will identify any bedbug signs.
@meh5069
@meh5069 2 жыл бұрын
Bed bugs aren’t generally my concern because it’s rarer than you’d think with soft furniture since bed bugs can’t burrow down into fabric. My concern is usually pet debris/smells/stains that you can’t see or smell until you get it in your space. ESP because I’m not a pet person, I have allergies to cats and dogs, and pet smells are disgusting lol

Secondhand is often actually better quality nowadays compared to new material furniture. I had to get new furniture by myself for my 3 sons and I a few years ago. I bought new stuff because I figured it would last longer. The bed frames I got us for around 300 on Amazon broke apart within less than a year. I only buy new things now if they are large appliances. Another thing I do is check the “mis-mixed” paint section every time I go to the hardware store. Sometimes you can get the highest quality, $85 gallons of paint for as little as $10. If you’re just doing an accent wall or small room, it’s a fun way to make a huge change on a budget. Occasionally you can find gorgeous designer colors.
