There's many options for tractor tires on the market, but it seems like you really only see few main options on most machines. Most OEM manufacturers like John Deere and Kubota really don't have much variety to offer and so you might have to go aftermarket to find the right tires for your machine. There really doesn't seem to be a lot of information about the benefits and drawbacks of different tread patterns. Hopefully this video provides some valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of different tractor tire tread patterns that are available on the market.
First, let's review the standard options. R4 Industrial tires are the wide, flat bar tires that migrated over from the heavy construction equipment industry. Generally viewed as an all-purpose tire with great tread life and somewhat considered a staple in the compact tractor market. R3 Turf tires are going to be your standard lawn and garden variety and if mowing is a primary task without much need for tackling off-road projects, then these could be a good option to consider. R1 Agricultural tires are what you see farmers using whether plowing, planting, or harvesting. When you think of a farm tractor, you picture it with these tires.
www.goodworkstractors.com/prod...
A couple of less popular options (I predict these will grow significantly in market share in coming years) are hybrid radial tires including the Carlisle Versa Turf, Goodyear R14, and Galaxy Pro R3+. A somewhat similar tire pattern is the bias HDAP (Heavy Duty All Purpose) which is found on a lot of high end garden tractors with similar patterns found on ATV's and UTV's.
Follow along to take a closer look at the tread patterns, understand the construction differences, and see where each one of these tractor tire tread patterns excels. If you haven't done so yet, please consider subscribing to my channel and check out the links below for more information on where to buy.

Excellent video! The industrial R4 tires are harder so that they will last on concrete or paved surfaces. This is the exact opposite of what you need on ice. Car snow tires use a softer compound than Summer tires to increase traction. More surface area is better on ice, maybe not so much on snow. Lost of guys end up cutting sipes in their aggressive tires to get more biting area. Living in Maine, I've been quite successful with my R3 Turf tires all year round. I have a set of chains but have yet needed to put them on.

Thank you Courtney! Making info great again as always. I had dual ag tires on an old Allis Chalmers B110 years ago, was a beast, went everywhere pulled anything, was not nice to the yard, I'm not picky about my grass so it didn't matter. You are right, they went no where on snow and ice. Now I have R4s on my 1025 and they work ok but those versaturfs interest me.

My Dad’s BX 1850 has the R3’s and my Kioti CS has the R4’s. I believe everything you mentioned about each of these to be spot on. I am impressed with the R3’s abilities in the snow and I believe it’s due to their tread contact with the surface that makes them do well. Also their longevity are worth mentioning, they are 13 years old with no problems. The R4’s are new to me on tractors anyway, so far I’m pleased with their performance.

I have switched to the HDAP tires on my John Deere 216, and 332 they are so much better on the lawn, on the hills, in the snow and out in the woods. I can go places that I never could reach with my R-3 tires. I wish I could find versa tread or equivalent for my 2520 to replace the R-3 turf tires and I don't want R-4s because I need traction in the winter too. Great video, Thanks!

Great info in this video. I have been running the stock turf tires on my 1025R for 5 years now. I mainly mow grass and clear snow and they have been great. I have a TLB so I have used them across several projects during this time on varying surfaces and weather conditions. The only issue I recall was in the Spring time helping a neighbor fill sink holes in his yard in a very wet area (we didn't really see at the time we went into it) and I got the machine stuck. We caught it in time and got it out before doing too much damage and avoided that area until it dried up and we could finish the job, but not sure we could have done any better with another tire. Based on what you have summarized here, when it comes time to replace these tires, I may wander on over to the radial option. Thanks for sharing.

I live in East Texas, on 365 acres, and all our tractors are conventional R-1 bias from our small tractors (650-1050 JD) to our 100 horse tractors, and they've never let us down, I even cut my lawn with my 650 with traditional "Tractor tires" and if done carefully, and almost exclusively when its hard and dry, the damage is very manageable. worth it in my opinion for the traction gained in the field, it had turf tires when we got it years ago and cutting fence rows required a chain and another tractor nearby to drag you out of the slightest wet areas. so we swapped out to 9.5-16 R-1's about 800 hours ago and like the results, but thats just for our application, if you had a large lawn and that was the sole use for the machine I could see the appeal of less aggressive rubber.

I am running R1 style tires on my Kubota B2320. I use them when im bush hogging in fields and of course when ive got the tiller attached. They do leave marks in wet conditions so im careful as to where around the house i drive it. Ive got about 800 hours on my machine and still have the original tires. As was commented, i try not to run on pavement to save wear and tear. A great tire in my opinion.

My 2025r with the R4 tore up a section of the lawn when spreading mulch. I found it easier to carve a path through the woods to reach the back of the house from the barn than having to redo my lawn every year. Bonus was my wife loved the new look of the woods cleared of the brush :)

Good stuff Courtney. As a off road motorcycle rider rubber compound has alot to do with traction. Soft rubber better traction but wear faster. Hard rubber better wear less traction. Radials are better because they conform to the terrain better.

Nice hearing that those Versa-Turfs really are the cat's meow, all vidoes and my limited experience show how awesome they are nearly everywhere. The R4 skid-steer tires are almost hopeless, it always amazes me that they're on so many new machines when their sole purpose is long-life on concrete for crazy heavy machines like skid steers. And those have the weight to keep traction on those high-contact tires unlike most compact tractors, unless you only use your tractor to move snow on paved surfaces those will always be my last choice. They slip going up trailers/ramps, slip in mud, slush, ice, snow, grass.

However I have been digging in the woods and those versa turf are fantastic way better that ag thanks again for all your time on your vidsI am sure it cuts in to your private life a lot

I bought my 1025r with turfs, traded in a bx1500 with turfs for it. Had John Deere 318 &316s with turfs. Living in Vt we have a long snow season as well as a mud season, and turfs perform just fine in every situation we threw at them with a few caveats. The 2wd garden tractors had to have chains in the winter. I think the old rubber was just too hard to work well without them. The sub compacts added 4wd and a lot of weight with the addition of the loader and rear 60” blower. Never had traction issues. Most loader ops were fine on the dry dirt or even most summer grass situations. If it had rained before work, or there was a clay based soil, or anything in the woods... had to be in 4wd just to scathe by. Note I don’t do that stuff often so it’s fine (for me). I don’t find chains to work well on pavement as they do a lot of damage to the asphalt. I have a long background in heavy equipment. Father a retired deere mechanic, me an army engineer of 20 years. I’d love to move to the Versa turfs or a variant now that they are around but I don’t see that happening till my next tractor purchase to replace the 1025 in 10-20 years. Love the videos. Between you, messicks, an ttwt, it’s a holy trinity for tractor information regardless of brand loyalty, most of the information between you three is versatile enough to apply across the market. I spend a lot of time watching them finding it’s a confirmation of everything I’ve been taught in 95% of the instances. My project scale is suited to road and airfield construction, but I dabble in subcompact work on the side because it’s easy for me. My attachments currently include 60” rear blower, front loader and forks, 4ft rear brush cutter, weight box, rear sweeper, and mmm. Also have a z so I don’t find much use in a mmm anymore. But worthy keeping on hand for odd jobs

Great job! I'm pretty sure I saw a JD 2 series tractor this past summer that was shod with the VersaTurf (sp?)! Neil @Messick's has a traction comparison video that swayed me toward a tire often referred to as a BarTurf or Goodyear Xtra Trac. Unfortunately, my Kubota dealer quoted me an outlandish price so I opted for the R14s on my new B2601. Glad to hear they perform well in the snow!

I am running them on my machine . . .they are a lot more money at the start up . . and like all machines when people look at tractors they 'think tires are just tires' not true . . I live in Massachusetts and I sometimes get into slick greasy clay . .not to often and with this kind of soil it wont matter what kind if rubber your running ' its usually going to be a long day' . . . i myself would not put a 25k plus machine in those kinds of situations . . . .thanks your tire run down . . .Great comparative display . . .

Turf = worst on my Deere 332 for everything. Dew on the grass? Not going anywhere. Steep (paved) driveway...don't even think about plowing the snow; though chains did help a little bit. HDAP = gets 75% of the way there. Fantastic in grass all the time without ripping it up. They're reasonably good in ice/snow provided enough ballast. Wet dirt, no good. The tread gets clogged up right away, and they turn into slicks. My Deere 955 has R1s on the front, and R4s on the rear. Don't have anything bad to say as of yet, but haven't had the opportunity to really "dig in" and test it out. Time will tell! I really like the idea of the R14 or Versa turf though. I haven't really seen or read anything bad about them. Thanks for the great video!

I've noticed a trend of some people putting R1 ag tires on the back of heavier, stiffer framed commercial zero turns due to the tendency of lawn tires to spin when the weight is shifted off them for any reason, even if they still have ground contact. Note that this is mostly for cutting yards or fields, not lawns. They simply deem the moderate damage from the R1s to be less problematic than the damage from spinning, especially considering the spinning tends to happen in the same places every time the grass is cut. However, I imagine that some of the new radial styles may end up being a better option than the ag tires to address the issue.

I'm wondering how well the sidewall on the radials hold up? I assume they balloon out a bit more than a bias ply, making them more vulnerable to rocks, roots or other hidden sharp stobs. I have the r4's currently, so of course I've been stuck numerous times, and looking at the sidewalls reveal several nasty gouges. I'm usually careful with my equipment, so I'm sure they got there while I was spinning the tires wildly in mud up to the steering wheel trying to extract us... Did I mention r4's will get you stuck? LoL, they're almost as bad as the diamond tread turf savers that were on the ol' ford jubilees we used on the golf course decades ago. LoL

One thing I've noticed is if you have a bigger tractor that has the R1tires and want to change to another style like an R4, you need to change wheels too. I have a John Deere 4520 with R1 tires. The tractors on the dealer's lot that have R4's have much wider rims and much lower profiles. Need to be aware that the cost to change tire tread designs on the 3000, and up series JD's will be pretty pricy. Apparently the sub compacts don't have that problem.

Had a Deere X748 with HDAPs on and they were Great in snow and ice with a snowblower. Upgraded to a Deere 1025R with the same size snowblower as the X748 had. NO where the traction on the 1025R as I had with the X748. And, the 1025R had loaded rear tires. Down sized to a Deere X758 with HDAPs. Back to great traction in the snow and ice. But the ride is much rougher on the X758 then I had on the X748. The X748 HDAPs were Carlisle and I know for sure the X758 HDAPs are not Carlisle. Don’t recall what brand they are. Thinking of upgrading To the Versa Turf since my X758 has the same tire size front and rear as a 1025R.

Some personal experience... I had a 2007 JD 4720 CUT (currently the 4066R) with R4 tires. I never had any traction problems with them in front range of Colorado (7500' elevation) snow and ice. I'm talking anywhere from a few inches of powder to 12-18+ inches of drifted wet heavy Sierra Cement. I have a video my neighbor took of me pushing deep, wet and heavy snow along his concrete driveway where you could see snow being shoved along 10+ feet out in front of the tractor's FEL. I'm guessing I had good luck with these tires simply because the tractor was much, much heavier than a sub-compact.

@@GoodWorksTractors lol ok if you must.. After I got the tires installed I thought I was a Mr. Tire Expert that day and decided to add liquid ballast to the rears myself. Well when removing the valve stem from the first rear tire I let to much air out and the weight of the tire, being suspended off the ground, broke the bead. I tried everything to get it back on, the strap(s), the bead blaster, everything. I finally gave up and with my head hung low and went back to the tire shop. They got a good laugh out of me. I learned I must have the liquid, pump, hose, and adapter ready to go when I remove the valve stem and attach the adaptor and hose as quickly as I can after removing the valve stem. The air burps through the submersible pump and once it slows down you fire the pump on. You repeat this of course as you add more liquid, stop the pump to let it burp and once it slows down fire it on again. The pump can overcome quite a bit pressure in the tire and doing the above prevents losing so much air that it breaks the bead. I still can't believe I lifted that tire and rim into my truck whenever I think about that brilliant moment in my life, lol! 😂

Hi, great vid. My rear axle Bridgestone PD1 tires, size 355 80 D20, are heading for exchange, soon. Hello, I think one important thing you left out in your tire video is the number of ply's needed for loader work. My tractor originally came with R4 18x8.5 (front) and 26x12 (rear) and were constructed using 6 ply construction. I then changed/upgraded the tires to HDAP tires (front and rear), and they did provide better grip, but they were only 4 ply. So when doing heavy loader work, the front tires would squat a lot (it looked like I was driving with 2 flat tires in the front). I've been searching everywhere for 6 ply tires, and I can only find them with R4 threads. I think that's why most tractors have R4 tires (especially if equipped with a FEL). If you know where to purchase 6 ply HDAP, please leave a comment below. thanks, Matt

I've seen Neil with Messick's, Tractor Time with Tim, and you all cover tires appropriately sized for the Deere 1 series and BX lines. The short glimpse of your 4066r with the R14s is what I'd really like to see more info on. It seems there's no dearth of opinions and comparisons for the sub-compact tractors, but I don't see much on the 3 and 4 series Deere-sized tractors. I have a 3320 cab tractor with a loader that does horribly in the snow, so I'm especially interested in what you think about the r14s on your lawn and in the snow later this year.

@@GoodWorksTractors Nope. I didn't miss that the R14s are the larger equivalent to the Versa Turfs; I just want to see a good review of the R14s on a larger, heavier tractor along with any advice that may also come in handy. For example, after seeing this video and researching what it would take to equip my 3320 with R14s, it doesn't look like the conversion is as straight forward as the 26x12-12 tires on the 1 series (or X-series, BX, etc.). If what I'm seeing is correct, the change from the 15-19.5 NHS R4 tire on my tractor also requires a change in rims if I'm interested in going from an industrial bias ply on a 19.5" rim to a radial "metric" tire (like the R14) due to differences in the bead. Did you run into the same thing with your 4066R? Also, did you find appropriately sized front radial tires, or are they still bias ply?
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 3 жыл бұрын
Any tire shop expert will get you the equivalents. I never worry about figuring out the size as my guy down the road never steers me wrong. I didn't change rims on my 4066r, only tires. I made a complete switch to radials (fronts and backs) on both machines.

I disagree about using R1's for lawn care. I run 23x10.50's Deestone ags on my garden tractor all year round, it's my main mowing machine. Loaded with washer fluid and wheel weights, it does not leave tracks on the lawn and is needed for my very hilly lawn. I did more damage when I had turfs on, when they would spin which was a lot, they would destroy the lawn. The ags just grip and go. I do run the all trails(hdap) on the front, they are very versatile for all around use. I would love to put the old Goodyear Terra type ag tire on all my tractors, have them on my Craftsman FF 24, great ag tire.

It may depend if it's an irrigated lawn or dry lawn. If it's a very dry, hard packed lawn then R1's probably won't dig in as much to cause damage. I can't run R1 on my lawn at all or there will be damage even if only going in a straight line.
