The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's newest blimp took to the skies Monday for its maiden flight. The test flight is part of a comprehensive training program Goodyear pilots and crew will undergo over the next two months.
The new blimp will officially be ready to begin travelling to cities around the United States after a formal christening ceremony this summer.
The blimp is an all-new, state-of-the-art version that is larger, faster, more maneuverable than previous models, and builds on the company's legacy as the world's leading builder and operator of airships. The blimp's speed was on display Monday as the ship, aided by a tail wind, eclipsed 80 miles per hour.

I saw the "Blimpumentary" which drew tears in my eyes when they deflated and cut up the old Blimp Spirit of America, the design which has been flying for 92 years. I guess all good things must come to an end, to be replaced by newer designs.

I think they look really cool. And those vectoring props and that tail unit kinda make it like a big pneumatic helicopter. BTW, its now the Goodyear Semi-rigid.

At 01:36 through 01:54 the video producer should have used a little better judgement on the videoing . The image in the referenced time frame was a bit "OBSCENE". It looks very much like,,,,well,,,,,,YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. Not real happy with that. I am not going to report anyone, but the video should have a WARNING message. Young children are on the internet all the time. I don't think anybody under 12 should see this.

The Zeppelin company in Friedrichshafen (Germany) built these NT Zeppelins (technically not a blimp). In Germany, the flights are open to the general public, they are VERY popular (despite costing ca. $500 for a 45 minute flight)

This blimp or something similar to it from Goodyear used to fly over Indianapolis all the time before, during , and after the 500 mile race. I haven't seen it in years around here but I saw it many, many times as a child.

I saw the new Goodyear blimp last month at the airport where I work. It seemed to be much quieter than the old style blimp. I didn't hear any engine sound while it flew.

Goodyear says that when they replaced the GZ20 class of blimps with the NT zeppelins, that they won't call it the Goodyear zeppelin, they would still refer to it as the Goodyear blimp.

I kind of wish they had painted it silver. I saw the previous model at an airshow when I was a kid and never forgot what it looked like. Plus it looks cool in the old color rather than blue and yellow.

Not all airships are blimps, the giant Zeppelins (like the Hindenburg that burst into flames) had a rigid metal skeleton covered with a protective fabric. Inside they had several gas bags for lift, as well as room for cabins and living accomodations inside the hull. Blimps are the smaller ones, which keep their shape from the gas pressure and don't have living areas inside the hull, only in that little hanging gondola.

The Zeppelin NT is cool and stuff, sleek & advanced, but it's shape is not as attractive as the old Goodyear blimps. The old ones had much more personality.

If you're talking about the old Goodyear blimps, you are wrong. No American dirigible was ever filled with hydrogen, including the German-built, American military-owned Macon, Akron & Shenandoah. The only dirigibles that used hydrogen were German and in other countries because in the early 20th century America was stingy with helium, and we were the only known source in the world large enough to fill a rigid airship.

Time will not change the design of the Zeppelin NT. It's basic and somewhat boring looking, except I do like the much larger size. I am a fan of old things, old airships, old amusement parks & roller coasters, old cars & planes. Modern technology and advancement has removed much of the beauty, simplicity, and fun of many things, the Goodyear blimp included.

Actually this one isn't a "Blimp" - its a Zeppelin NT (New Technology). A Blimp doesn't have the internal rigid framework that a Zeppelin (like the Hindenburg) had. That's why they are also called dirigibles and the Airships of the US Navy in the 30s (USS Shenandoah, USS Los Angeles, USS Akron, USS Macon) all had the designator ZR (Zeppelin Rigid). The Navy Blimps of WW II and the Goodyear Blimps up to the 70s didn't have the framework. In the 1990s the Zeppelin Company started to build the Zeppelin NTs (with a smaller internal Framework) again at the original site of the original Zeppelins in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance in southern Germany. You can identify the Blimps from the Zeppelin easily: The Blimp has 4 fins in the back (like the old Zeppelins) whereas the Zeppelin NT has 3.

This is neither a blimp nor a zeppelin. Goodyear themselves calls this a "semi-rigid airship". And they also call it a blimp for some reason. The zeppelins where rigid airships made by a certain manufacturer in germany. A blimp is just a common name for a non-rigid airship.

Building airships in Friedrichshafen was never profitable. If you look at this on a company level, i.e. the Zeppelin Luftschiffbau GmbH founded in 1908. But it was very profitable for the town and area in the end. 1909 Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin and Wilhelm Maybach founded an own company to build engines for airships. MTU (Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG). In 1910 Claude Dornier joined the Zeppelin Luftschiffbau GmbH, and became a specialist for light metal designs. Founded later an own company and took over the Zeppelin Lindau facilities to construct/build airplanes. This company is now part of Airbus Defence and Space. In 1915 a further company was founded to produce gears for airship motors. Today known as ZF Friedrichshafen AG. In 2023 167,000 employees and a revenue of 46.6 billion USD. Zeppelin Luftschiffbau GmbH was always and still is owned by a public foundation, the Zeppelin Stiftung. This foundation collapsed in 1946 and became - due to its foundation statutes - a municipal foundation controlled by the town of Friedrichshafen. ZF Friedrichshafen AG is owned to 92.5% by the Zeppelin Stiftung. ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG which designed and produces the Zeppelin NT models is owned to 51% by Zeppelin Luftschiffbau GmbH and to 49% by ZF Friedrichshafen AG.
