I appreciated this video. I owned the old duratracs and found them loud but much better in snow than ko2's. However, they wore badly and cupped in around 30k. Alignment and improper rotation may have been the cause, not sure. One thing I find with these tire review videos is that people rarely mention slush, that dreaded point at which snow starts to melt due to salt. This condition is my biggest concern. Thanks for the info.. from Canada

I personally swear by Dura Tracs. I worked at Les Schwab for 15 years and have seen just about everything out there. I live in east Idaho and my main hobby is snowmobiling, but I also hunt/fish/camp/shoot...anything outdoors basically and I've never found a tire that did so much, so well. I drive an F150 and with my sled in the back, I can conquer the worst that Island Park and W. Yellowstone has to offer. Once this 3rd set wears low, I WILL BE getting this updated tire. Yes the BFG AT3 road a little better, but that's not important to me at all. What's most important to me is winter traction and the BFG as well as the Toyo's don't hold a candle to the Dura Trac's traction. The 3 sets I've had have all worn like iron, no cupping or feathering, but I probably pay more attention to my tires than your average consumer. The Baja Boss' and the Falken At3 are also strong considerations as some of my buddies swear by them (especially the Falken), but I'll be a Dura Trac guy for years to come. SO GLAD they didn't change too much of the original design!!

I ran load E Duratracs in 33” on my Tacoma with a lot of extra weight from winch/plate bumper/sliders and put 90k miles on them and they had minimal wear, and were great on rocks, snow, sand and gravel. They weren’t noisy on road either. Never had so much as a flat. They still had over 50% tread remaining when I took them off. I only changed them because they were ten years old. Didn’t want to risk dry cracking on something used for towing and off roading. Replaced them with a new set of Duratracs. Then they came out with the Kevlar like 6 months later.

Great review! One thing that's almost never mentioned is the depth of the sipes. So many tires that LOOK like they'll provide good wet and snow traction have sipes that are hardly more than cosmetic; within 5,000-10,000 miles, they've disappeared as the initial "siped" layer of each tread block wears down. There are few tires that have full-depth sipes.

I've been waiting for this video. Thank you! I currently have DuraTrac tires on my 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab LT Z71. I've had them for 3 years now. Perhaps next year, I'll get the DuraTrac RTs installed. I bought my DuraTrac tires after the original Wrangler Fortitude HTs wore out from the 2018 / 2019 Silverado LD Z71 take-off wheels and tires that were installed on my truck when I bought it used as a one-owner dealer trade-in. I liked the Wrangler DuraTrac tires because they were OE on the new Silverado Trail Boss.

Thanks for the video. I'll likely run some RTs on mu XJ. Ran a set of Kevlar Duratracs on my XJ 2 sets ago, (got new wheels with crappy ATs on them, but I'm too cheap to let tires go to waste) and am running Kevlar Duratracs on my 150 currently in NorCal. Really have enjoyed this tire for years on two different trucks. Finally someone else says it, the Duratrac was the OG hybrid tire. I really can't think of a time I wished I had KO2s over the duratracs, but I never had sidewall issues with these. If this newer RT tire drives better on rode, I'm sorry to make you all mad but why spend money on a KO3 and wait 5 million years for your tire size. The Duratrac RT and Falken AT4W has you covered today for less monies.

From size to size and from Load Range to Load range it is very hard to compare tires... but this pair weighs exactly the same as the BFG KO3 in a Load rannge D (these were Load Range E) - 59Lbs.... that is a full 8 lbs lighter then the Load E HD Falken AT4w.... so they are a Light tire... pretty impressive weight considering they Beefed them up.

Thanks for the hard work on the review. I'm super bummed about the changes. The old studded version on my f350 got through Donner pass every time ice or snow. Was great off road in the snow as well. If you do mud a lot, get MT's. This looks like a great all round tyre for most people. Snow is something a lot of people in USA will drive in on a daily basis. Wet roads is my concern as mine are on a daily driver, see's mud maybe once a year. I'm more sand/rock 4 wheeling. Still, it looks good but for now...AT3W Falkens will do me, they are nice and quiet too.

Thanks for the video! The only real issues I've had with my traditional Duratracs have Ironically been wet rocks off road, even just damp rocks. Gave me a tough time on yansing gulch and Holy Cross in Colorado. Planning to switch to a full mud terrain in the future for the best off-road performance and then possibly switch back to the duratracs in the winter since they do so well onroad snow. If anyone has a recommendation I'll take it.

I’ve had the Duratrac RT on my Tacoma for about 7k miles. No chipping yet, but I haven’t abused them offroad much. In the snow of NW IA they performed fantastic last winter. Better than the OG Duratrac IMO and the Kenda Klever RT that they replaced. I think overall it performs better 98% of the time than the old ones. The other 2% is mud, but I will avoid mud at all costs, it’s just nasty. lol

Went from the old duratrac to a maxxis razr at. It was a very cheap 35x12.5 compared to the other well known brands in the US. Literally saved $100 a tire compared to the big names these days like ridge grappler or Mickey T Bajas. I picked them up cuz the Aussies swear by maxxis and they know a good tire brand. So far they have been way better than the OLD duratracs at pretty much everything. Now it has me wondering how they stack up against the new duratracs. Not that I have any regrets, I never get the same tire/brand a second time in a row. I always try something different.

BALANCING-VIBRATION Issue with current Duratracs on my ‘21 GMC AT4. A truly love/hate relationship. Love them at lower speed use, especially on gravel and snow covered roads and terrain, but absolutely hate them on the highway. I have had them rebalanced twice within the current 20k miles on them, and still get a most annoying vibration starting at about 70 mph and completely disruptive above 75 to a point where I feel there is harm being done to wheel bearings and other body/frame connections. Still can’t tell if it is just one of the four tires or more. Would really like to know if Goodyear has a customer support option where you can discuss with an actual tire engineer who can assess how much unbalancing we should be accepting with regard to a road and trail tire. i.e.- Can these newly designed tires be balanced and installed to allow smooth driving at 80-85 mph, which is pretty common now on most of the interstates. If the tires are restricted to 70 and under due to off-road design characteristics, we should know that before we buy them. And in the case of my truck, these are the original tires, so no, the issue isn’t with my truck’s wheels or suspension. (20k for mileage & never any major impact to wheels)

What a fantastic and comprehensive review, thanks very much! My question is, the DuratracRT isn't marketed as having Kevlar in Australia. Do you know if it is a different carcass or if it doesn't have kevlar unlike the ones you have. Possibly a difference with country of manufacture as I've noticed they are manufactured in USA, Mexico and Chile? I've run the MT/R with Kevlar as it had such a strong carcass for remote touring and am hoping to retain a kevlar carcass with real offroad ability.

I worked for a county in a mountain town in Colorado, I maintained county vehicles, all the sheriffs department trucks and rescue trucks. We exclusively used Duratracs, they were an absolute nightmare! Constant uneven wear, constantly out of balance which made me have to rebalance every time vehicles came in for an oil change, 3K miles, ridiculous! We switched to BFG’s and all those issues went away. Stay away from Duratracs is what this professional would tell you.

Duratrac is the best tire, and the new RT with the 3 ply sidewall is even better. My only concern is in the deep clay/mud, where I think the old one with bigger voids would do it better. I still think that Goodyear just had to put a 3 ply sidewall in the old design with bigger voids, and that would be the perfect Duratrac... But anyway, if you want to excel in deep clay/mud you should go for the Wrangler Boulder, right?

I’ve ran Duratracs since 2011 on a Tahoe and now a Yukon Denali XL. Hands down best tires I’ve ever owned. I keep them rotated, run 40psi in them and keep my alignment spot on. Never have I had issues with uneven tread wear or cupping. They are not cheap but I get 70,000 miles out of them. Ran 295x65x18 on my Tahoe and 305x55x20 on my Denali….

Great review. I had a set of Duratracs here in Northern Canada and I loved everything about them except how terribly loud they were. Is there anything else that is as good in ice, snow and mud, but is quieter?

The old duractracs would go well beyond 50k if rotated every 5k miles. I’m not sure changing it will make it better.

I got the duratrack in 09 when they came out. I agree first tweener tire and a very weak sidewall. But the newest duratrack SUCK in mud conditions and not a very good tire on our work trucks

If the Duratrac RT came out 4 years ago, I would have been genuinely excited about it. I believe they went the opposite direction from what made the Duratrac a fantastic tire. But I guess I will have to admire this tire on other people's rigs. I already found my new Go - to tire. Its not this one. It is an RT though I love these reviews!

Again.. I’m not buying a foreign tire from an American company that keeps sending jobs overseas. That why I buy Nitto, Toyo, or Yokohama which are foreign companies that have made the US their home, creating large numbers of US jobs and major investments into the US economic success. Yokohama makes most of its off road tires in the US. BFG (Michelin) also have invested huge amounts into the US. Goodyear will probably have no tires made in the US in 10 years.

@@OutdoorAuto also true but the gap is far smaller between the best and worst dry traction at tire than it is between the best and worst mud traction at tire. i dont fear crashing driving around town with mud tires but i do fear getting stuck in the middle of nowhere and having to wait or walk hours to get out. like everything its case by case i suppose as to what individual people value more.

As the owner of a lifted Bronco Sport Badlands, I'd have already bought a set of these if they came in an XL load rated 245/65/17 but a few people say both a 245/70/17 and a 255/65/17 will fit on a lifted BS, both of which are also XL load rated. My questions are 1. Are the Xl load rated tires also 3 ply sidewalls? I've never heard of that happening before, on any XL tire but saw a statement from a GY rep elsewhere, that all of the RT were 3 ply sidewalls. 2nd question, How do you think these will compare to the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss's, I already have?

A common complaint on the old ones was that the would "float"... which makes sense... they definitley tried to improve that with the new ones... still probably wont track quite as good as the Falken At4w and BFG KO3's... but those tires also aren't great for mud.

I've been running the original Duratrac tires for ten years. One of my favorite attributes is how they whine during cornering. I take turns a lot harder than the average driver. BFG AT's would just lose traction without warning. The Duratrac's would howl and slowly let go at the traction limit. The predictable feel and communication are more important to me than peak grip. I hope the new Duratrac's have similar corner manners. Most of these tire reviews focus on the mud, snow, and rocks. The reality is, most people are driving on pavement most of the time. I would like to see reviews of taking these tires to their limits in various conditions.

I have a set of the originals on my '03 TJ, and am on my second set of originals on my 5th Gen 4RUNNER. I have about 10 years experience with the tires. In my previous life, I ran automotive repair shops for a prominent local business. I have never been a Goodyear guy. I was a Bridgestone lover at heart for the sticky rubber and good wear, which at the time, was the opposite of Michelin, BFG, and Goodyear. It took a lot of research and video dissecting (Jeep forums are great for tire video) for me to even get close to purchasing a Goodyear. They are loud. I don't care, but it may be a factor for some. My Jeep is lifted, the tires are 33x1050, and they still have saved me from wrong way drivers during snowstorm on 3 different occasions - that's a lot of snow and slush to push. My 4RUNNER is lifted with Eibachs, which make it more capable, but a better daily driver. I cam be as spirited in dry as I wish, and I still rule the deep snow. These tend to flat spot overnight, but if you've had experience with some 2000 era high performance tires, that's nothing. The fact that the OGs had holes for studs set them apart. Also, if you look at the vertical length of the center trad block, you can see that they disperse water and slush well, which in an emergency you'll appreciate. I will say, I like the new sidewall blocks, as that is what a tire with so many advancements over it's competition when it came out should be fitted with. More sipes are good, as I never understood the underrepresentation on the OGs. I don't like the Chile thing. I get it, but as a premium tire, I expect to pay, and I'd rather pay Joe than José. I love all races, but I hate the global economy. In short, the Duratrac was a Juggernaut, and I am sure that any changes they made will benefit more users. The issue for me is, that most of those folks don't drive what I drive, or they way that I drive. I guess we'll see in 4 years when I need a new set of tires...
