We learn about Google's AIY voice and vision kits at this year's Maker Faire, and check out a few projects that make use of the kits' artificial intelligence capabilities. The vision kit, in particular, impressed us with its ability to recognize objects, faces, and even emotions.

That drawing robot is *very interesting!* Seems to be connected to a microphone in the video.. but connected to a camera + some edge finding algorithms could be a really cool project! Would just require a pencil and some "post its" to create a picture; super inexpensive physical memories!

I see some people bothered about things like Google Cardboard, Nintendo Labo, and now these AIY kits being made of cardboard. Why is that? I see it as an excellent idea. It makes these things cheaper than if the company invested in injection molds for plastic parts. Even better, it makes it possible for people to make one themselves if they're good with a box cutter or have access to a laser cutter. Obviously there are usually some extra parts like the lenses for Cardboard and probably string and springs for Labo, but those are usually relatively easy to obtain, too. Not sure if Google will sell the raspi companion boards separately or open source the board designs and partlist, but that would be cool if they did. Like the Google rep said at the end, these kits are a product for Makers, the cardboard is just a rough scaffold to learn how these things work. Then you take it apart and use the pieces in your own project. On top of all that, if you get bored of them, you can just recycle the cardboard rather than toss a hunk of plastic into the trash. I'll take Labo over all those cheap plastic attachments for the wiimote any day 🤷‍♂️

Ian Grams despite commonly being called cardboard what they are using is corrugated fiberboard. I know a am being pedantic but there is a reason. By industry definition cardboard is a thick paper board. Thicker than paperboard, thinner than a game board. If they used actual cardboard it would work so much better.

How is it not working now? It's just a cardboard box. I can 3D print my own or make one out of any material I want. Those are not made out of fiberboard, It's cardboard.

MEMATRON they are using a micro flute corugated board. This works fine but it does not have the durability of proper cardboard.

If you want to argue about cardboard you can but there are more interesting things to do than that. You're just doing that macro-fallacy shit. i understand but come on man, go build something.
@IanGrams

Jttv I've got a v1 Voice kit and Star Wars Cardboard sent by Goofle in front of me and you're definitely right, it's much thinner than normal cardboard. That being said, they've both held up rather well. Neither seem to be objects subject to rough handling unless you're handing them to a bunch of kids. Labo, on the other hand is definitely expected to be used by kids. So if this thinner corrugated board is weaker, that would be a bit annoying. Idk if it is or how exactly they're constructed so I defer to those who do. But with these AIY kits, like the rep said these kits aren't meant to be the permanent enclosure. You're meant to learn how it works with the "rough scaffolding" then take it apart and incorporate it into your own project like they did with the automatic pen or the "joy meter". If you want a more durable proper cardboard enclosure for it, it shouldn't be too hard to DIY.

Introducing 2030 Google Cardboard House for people who've been replaced by AI and can't afford proper housing.
@ernestmac13
@ernestmac13 6 жыл бұрын
you don't get is, the cardboard housing makes it more accessible to kids and older students compared to less sophisticated DIY kits; like BOSE $100 Bluetooth Speaker Cube. While the Bose speaker is a Bluetooth speaker that has LED's that can change colors in response to music, once a student assembles the speaker they have only learned the fundamentals of how a speaker works, about the basics of Bluetooth, and that's about it. After the first use, there are no more opportunities for learning, because the Google AIY kits utilize a Raspberry Pie, students young and old can learn not only about, artificial intelligence, smart speakers, smart cameras, etc, they can learn about programming, home security, home automation, robotics, and so much more. Much like during the tech revolution of the 80's, where those folks in offices who were intimidated by the computers that were entering office spaces found themselves out of work; vs those employees who educated themselves on how to either operate the technology, how to maintain the technology, how to program the technology, etc, and found they not only kept their job, but found themselves often in higher paying jobs with better benefits. We are at the next logical juncture for a technologically advanced species such as ours, this juncture is to make the choice to end our all to often violent and self destructive ways, and to utilize our collective efforts and technological advancements to not only undo the damage we have done to the planet and enable our species to live more in balance with nature; we will begin the push off into the nearby solar system, for the sake of exploration, for the abundant resources which will replace our dwindling finite resources here at home, and the technological and social advancements striving for such a worthy goal will inspire within humanity. We have seen an impact on Jupiter bigger then the earth itself, and we know such extinction events have occurred here on earth on more then one occasion. By spreading ourselves throughout the solar system, we increase the odds of survival of our species. When the day comes when our sun becomes less stable and it heats up our planet beyond what is hospitable for life, humanity will be able to move out across the stars to solar systems with younger stars, and who knows we may be the first advanced civilization which gives birth to others from our descendants, as we make this journey. In any case, history has shown that any society that, thinks it no longer needs to seek knowledge, that no longer needs to explore, that no longer needs to advance science and technology, etc, ends up stagnating and degrading over time. This is what has been happening here in America for several decades, as we have abandoned our educational system, allowed unequal access to a quality education to become the norm, for education to become less and less affordable, and much like Greece in the time of Socrates; to let rhetoric become the rule of both politics and public discourse. The fact you fail to see the value in educational products like the Google AIY Kits is one such example.

I don't get why people are so up about this. Google Cardboard was a toy for fun. Labo is a toy for kids. AIY is a serious tool that requires programming and hardware skills to put together. Sure, they all have shells made from cardboard, but AIY is in completely different league.
@Geeksmithing
@Geeksmithing 6 жыл бұрын
GenericName it doesn't take any programming to get it together an have the initial joy detector demo to work. It's all preinstalled on the SD card.
@luk1505
@luk1505 6 жыл бұрын
You're not entirely correct. While it is mostly pre-installed, it still does require tinkering with the shell in order to use it fully. You cannot just put the SD card, turn it on and play with it. It's far more serious than Labo, with the focus on learning hardware and software skills, not just playing around. Take a look at Google AIY website, where it's all explained step by step for each kit: Voice and Vision, how to use the shell, launch python scripts and switch between different functions of the kit. From there it is straight to writing your own code to make it do what you want.

wow, just the other day I watched a video on tech companies using bio recognition. But they needed your image in their data banks.( A possible use of this could be used as a data search bank to pick out a suspect out of a crowed.) So now here's an AI "toy" that will upload your image to a "cloud" server. Also known as data banks.
@ernestmac13
@ernestmac13 6 жыл бұрын
Like any technology, bio-recognition can be abused however, if your small child is lost such technology could help find them. If some sick individual were to kidnap your child, such technology could be used to, either ihelp pick your child out of the crowd, or the suspect. Imagine if your child disappears at an amusement park like Disneyland or Six Flags, and how many kids do disappear at such attractions each year. If you are that worried, stop using the internet, get rid of your smart phone, and any other device with a webcam and or access to the web. Don't forget you likewise have to avoid walking past anyone else with such technology, walking past security cameras, dash cams, and countless other technologies. Unless you want to live out in the boonies and off the grid, you might as well get used to it. Best you can do is watch big brother with your devices, so when they behave badly you have a record to protect others and yourself. This is reason Cop Watch was founded, the police needed policing.

If you have bothered to look at some of the amazing designs people have done on the Nintendo Labo and the Google AIY Kits. you would change your view. You can drop the AIY Kits over and over without damaging them, and if do damage it; simply getting some more cardboard somewhere and tracing the shape of the damaged kit onto it should allow you to make a new one.
