‪@Google‬'s I/O event was like all AI and we break down all the biggest announcements and give you our take on whether or not these new tools are going to set it apart from ‪@OpenAI‬.
Demis Hassabis brought some new ‪@Google_DeepMind‬ stuff including a new text-to-video model called VEO & a step toward agentic AI with Project Astra and both look promising if not a little far off from where we thought they'd be.
But really, this was Google putting AI into all the things it has including Google Search, Google Mail and even Google Photos. There's a ton of stuff that's going to be exceptionally useful but it left us a little wanting after the OpenAI event yesterday.

Google's I/O was... fine? I don't think anything truly wowed me like yesterday's OpenAI event but there's a lot to like here. I really do love being able to search for my license plate in Google Photos.

Definitely agree with you Gavin. I think there are some really cool things especially the NotebookLM but I felt like there was a ton of info and it felt a little disjointed and all over the place. Interested to play with these things once they're available.

⁠well I truly appreciate all the up to the minute news. I know it’s been off schedule for you guys but I gather you’ll be getting busier as AI goes nuclear and everyone is talking about it nonstop. It seems that way already but truly most people barely think or discuss the topic. To most people it seems AI is a generic term for automatic but what you’ve brought to light is the exciting frontier that is a gold rush like no other

The 2 AIs talking about science was pretty interesting. I feel AI Teachers would greatly help humanity as a whole by at least raising the average across the board in every country. We could always use some brighter bulbs. Having a Halo like Cortana personal assistant i feel is the logical step forward to have baseline on every phone. Hallucination would have to be solved first though!

honestly, if we can truly solve hallucination i think these would leap in usefulness so much was listening to the vergecast this week and their biggest criticism (justified imo) against all the news this week was the fact that you absolutely cannot trust these to respond without hallucinating. if that gets solved, so many people would immediately convert

I just had this off the wall thought about the licence plate ID capabilities. In the event of an "Amber Alert" type situation, Tesla style cars on the network could CHOOSE to opt in, for a.i. to search plates in real time and forward the info to police? It's a terribly slippery slope, and I'm trying to find the good in it, which there is little.

Awesome breakdown, thanks guys I also found myself underwhelmed by Google here. It feels like they're just spread too thin, where OpenAI is a tightly-knit team working towards a singular goal. All the features were neat, they were just too scattered...

I definitely hated how nothing was ready for primetime, especially that convo on NotebookLM - WHICH - had tiny text that said it was prerecorded audio!

Agree with the sentiments. Appeciate that Google is really thinking about how this technology can actually improve upon daily lives and enhance what users are already doing with their products. (not just slapping a chatbot into the search bar that interrupts behavior patterns. *cough* meta *cough *)

@@AIForHumansShow well, the only users to have access to some Google's products at the moment are americans, right? I'm brazilian and I still can't use many things I see poeple having access to. Isn't that an America First approach? For example, look at the message I'm seeing right on my screen: NotebookLM is currently only available in the U.S. NotebookLM is only available in the U.S. for users 18 and up

I would like to mentioned I see a trend here. I see OpenAi leaving the old boyfriend Microsoft and going to bed with Apple. I see google moving to ANDROID only. So if you want OpenAI assistant, you go to iphone and MacOS...and windows later on. However, If you want google assistant, you go to Android....and windows later on. Due to the AI mobile wars, microsoft is in a "later" position.

I wouldn't sleep on MS - the built in Windows co-pilot features are pretty robust already, and likely to get better. And they're wise to encourage OAI to cozy with Apple.

OpenAI feels like sleek sexy shmexy eventGoogle IO, on the other hand, looks like planetarium planning meeting by the Communist party where all the seats are taken, but they clap with sad faces Gavin just said it - it looks like lens and why can't we play with it now? they used to close streets in SF to hold this event in 2014 and jumping off the roof! 10 years later it is low key 2 hours event at their campus???
