Fantastic teardown, vey glad to see how easy it is to replace the screen. Now we just need Google to actually SELL US the screen! I'm glad they didn't serialize components like Samsung and Apple, they deserve credit on that! Battery could be a bit easier to replace, and the soldered on charging port really sucks. Thanks again for these teardowns!

Nothing in this teardown either confirms or refutes serialization. We simply don't know until someone attempts to swap components from two similar devices.
@SalemTechsperts
@SalemTechsperts 2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeTrieu Not this teardown, his 6 Pro teardown, he did exactly that. Swapped components to test what would work. Only thing serialized is the fingerprint reader, which makes sense. And Google provides you the calibration software to re-calibrate a new fingerprint reader, which is unheard of and a huge step forward for right to repair. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p991oKaZtLOlfmQ.html We can assume this applies to the regular Pixel as well.

Sorry but has nothing to do with right to repair. Watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9qcm5iVzrnRh4k.html&ab_channel=LouisRossmann It is when phone manufacturers use a certain chip that the manufacturers of these chips (eg. TI, Samsung etc) are not allow to sell or like Apple that even genuine Apple parts (e.g. from brand new phones) can't be swapped between the same two devices because they don't have the same serial number. Soldering a USB C port to the main port is not like that. It worsens the reparability, but it does not make the operation impossible like in the mentioned cases.

@@user-bp8yg3ko1r There is an engineering and durability reasoning for such choices. Not everything can be made modular while meeting goals set by the team for longevity. The same thing goes for those being upset about the how complex these devices are to disassemble. You can only do so much in such a small space.
@b0nz1official
@b0nz1official 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-bp8yg3ko1r Then watch the video. Louis Rossmann is probably one the most famous proponents of R2R. And he explains in detail why there is a huge difference and he doesn't want to force companies of using parts that are easier to repair because it could slow or hinder progress. He even explains that he is worried that people don't get the difference and you clearly are a candidate.

I tried to remove the glass, it looks like it should be replaceable but the adhesive is really strong so I did not want to risk cracking or breaking it so I left it alone. But even if you clear out the back, on this phone you wont see anything since the glass sits over the aluminum uni body of the phone, there is only a square cut out for the wireless charger but aside from that you would not see into the phone.

That main camera is enormous for a phone. I'm looking forward to seeing what Google is able to do in the coming months as they tune their image processing for the larger sensor. Right now they're still using basically the same image processing that they've used for several years with a much smaller sensor, so quality is only going to improve with time.

@@jvbenjamin Yes I would. 100% but i have a feeling that Pixel 7 will have all those tiny issues (that 6 has) solved and improved on. So if you are not on a budget constraint and can wait 5 months, Pixel 7 would be a better buy. 6a looks beautiful with that handy form factor but pixel 6 will still be a better overall device when comparing the two. So if you want one NOW close your eyes and get the Pixel 6. See if you can get a carrier sale price of $549 that would be sweet. Only get the 6a if you are tight on budget or want a small handy phone And pixel 7 if you can wait a bit. I have a feeling that the Pixel 7 will be $100 more than 6 (ie; 700 dollars) so you have enough time to save up.

I don't know if this has happened before, but here it goes. My Pixel 6 suffered from a swollen battery and it pushed the screen away from the frame. I went to a Google authorised service center to get the battery replaced. A day later they said that they could not remove it. The reason being that they were unable to remove the screws. They even asked me if I had gotten it checked somewhere else. Of course I hadn't. They suggested that the screws seemed to be worn and gotten stuck. Im not sure if this was a manufacturing defect, but this spelled the end of my P6 journey. The screen now hangs by the flexible connector. Pity that the phone had been dropped just once and was in perfect shape with no cracks or dents. And barely 1.5 years old.

You can always use a power drill with a drill bit small enough to fit inside the screw head, and drill slightly into the screws to break off the heads. Then you can use a clamp or something similar to grab and twist the broken screws out and replace them with new screws.

excellent video! I have the pixel 6 but when I open tik tok or some video chat app with several people (only audio) the phone heats up a few minutes after opening the applications and if it heats up something strong, but the heating only occurs on the left side device (side, front and rear frame). This does not happen with other apps, and with games I have not tried it but I suppose it is the same. do you think it happens due to a software or optimization problem? the truth worries me: /
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
It's normal for it to heat up due to the fact the point of the heat transfer materials on the inside are to exchange heat from the components out to the outside of the phone. Also the main board is located on that side you are feeling heat, so again should be normal. But if it is extremely hot that you cant hold the phone then might be an issue with the phone or software/app you are running.

Yeah, I don't go too into detail on those things because I feel if someone doesn't have any experience at all and doesn't know how to use any of those tools, it wouldn't be a good idea for them to do it in the first place because so many people end up damaging other parts along the way trying to fix one thing. So I just try to show the stuff people want to see like internal build, cooling and basics on internal part removal vs how to use a suction cup tool. Entertainment wise yeah its a good idea, but educational wise not so much I feel. For example, I've had people who don't even know which button is the power button on the phone try to take their phone apart and damage it when they shouldn't have been attempting it in the first place :)

The display sounds very "hollow" when tapped, you don't get this with a Samsung for eg. It's feels "cheap". I guess this is because it sits over the battery?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
It's possible its due to the fact the screen doesn't have a metal back plate or any backing and the plastic boarder of it has it siting slightly above internal components so nothing actually touching it directly so might be giving it that hollow sound when tapped.

My charging port got bit of moisture and now only slow charging works but even that only with Type A ->Type C charger cable. Type C -> Type C charging cable doesn't let any voltage to phone. So I'm saying biggest problem with pixel 6 build is that charging port module is not replaceable. Noticed same thing continues with pixel 7.
@PBKreviews

Yep, soldered charging ports on main boards suck. You can try to use a toothbrush to brush out any corrosion inside the charger port itself to see if it will help.

seems like so much empty space inside. They could definitely pack it all denser, and make the form factor smaller. (except the thickness of the camera bump)

In some ways yea but also the more compact and closer everything is, the more heat is boggled up and also makes for repair jobs even more difficult. Also the battery needs some room to expand during charging and so forth. I'm not an expert in electrical engineering or how they engineer the boards, so I can't speak on the behalf of how they arrange the layout and why they couldn't make the board smaller by arranging the components and chips closer to each other. :)

I wish you would have taken two identical phones and tried exchanging the parts to see what Google disables. I saw the leaked document indicating some parts are serialized in the firmware on the main board to prevent people from repairing their own phone, similar to what Apple has done on the 13. Only Google or an ASP will have access to software to restore functionality. Obviously, if Google is doing that, there is no possible end-user repair without losing functionality. Score should be zero.

I have heard some folks say that the pixel screen feels hollow when you interact with it. I have not touched a pixel 6 yet, but can someone confirm or debunk this?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews 2 жыл бұрын
It's probably because of the fact the screen sits on top of a plastic frame that borders the sides of the screen and the center is somewhat hollow but very slightly. However the glass is gorilla glass victus and is strong so there are no worries of it breaking. Also most other phones have a metal plate or backing where the back of the screen is adhered to that plate so this one doesn't do that which is another reason you may hear that hollowness when tapped on etc.

I have a few, but the main reason is that a lot of people are able to get the iPhones early or right before release and they upload teardown videos on them quick so there tend to be numerous teardown videos on them and isn't worth me spending the thousands of dollars on them when I won't get many views on the videos to recoup the costs etc. Hope this explains it. But when I am able to get my hands on one early, I will definitely do a video on it. :)
