Had to go back because I was thinking how great material design is and it's been 9 years since it rolled out. Now we swipe the screen to go back and to the home screen and it feels so natural.

I would say Matias is easily the foremost UI design expert or there right now, he just gets it. If his comment from a few years ago about them so having so much more to achieve in Android with respect to the UI goals they have is still true then I can't wait to see what else is in store.

But it's a design choice he made for himself. I assume when he is making design choices for the users he is not entirely biased by personal taste.

Inbox by Gmail was really a game changer for email apps when it came out. Such a shame they discontinued it and is now unusable in favor of boring cumbersome plain old Gmail.

I think Google Polymer is great, but it puts yet another layer between back-end and front-end development and pushes the actual core code (HTML?) deeper.

it's to ultra simplistic. It looks like it was designed for people with ADD. It brings web design and creativity about 20 years in the past.. they talk about it as if it's some genius new system. All it's doing is making everything look the same. Yes, I agree there should be standards but this isn't anything special

Material design reminds me how web pages and portals used to look on webTV. Hey, I used to love web TV but that was also 1998. Material design also reminds me of construction paper design that toddlers would make. It's Ultra simplistic, Ultra boring and it's making all apps and web page look like cookie-cutter clones of each other. What happened to creativity? Before material design, we're just starting to see the look of beautiful and engaging webpages and app. Now they describe material design is beautiful? Wow, I should become an artist. The Verdict is in and material design sucks. Case in point, there is a popular weather app for Android that used its own unique graphics and colorful design and got one of the highest ratings on the Google Play Store - a 4.6-4.7 And the other day decided to switch to material design. Their review page is flooded with 1-star reviews almost everyone says how basic, simple and silly it looks now. I can't believe that someone is making huge box that is responsible for creating this design language. Must have been a millennial with major ADD...

CeeStyleDj I guess since you're expressing your opinion here, I will too, even though I'm a couple months late. Design is ever evolving. Things that people thought were fancy back in the 90's seem so old to us nowadays. And honestly? Google's approach to a simplistic design that carefully invokes the feeling of cleanliness and neatness is charming in its own way. It isn't too distracting to the eyes, and it isn't too bland either. Sure, the developments they make still are not perfect, but they are working on it, and are getting there. Sometimes, "less means more" can not only be applicable to words and prose, but also to design so that people can focus on the aspects of the interface that really matters. Well, of course, that's just my two cents. You do you, man.

The old Gmail looks better. Sometimes what we want is simple data access, not a new design with excessive padding.

Actually i still don't have a gmail account, only because the design always looked so horribly unclean when I saw it at a friend's computer. It's totally overloaded and when I see the new design, I might consider switching.

Material design has given software designers an excuse for being lazy. Flat, boring and totally without any imagination or style whatsoever. Look at 1:53 through 2:02. When the material design comes up you want to shield your eyes from the stark white glare. Then you start searching for the light gray borders and other symbols in that sea of white. No depth, no contrast, no shading, no colors. Software design is moving backwards. Even more nauseating is that all the developers have jumped on it. Again, it gives them an excuse to be lazy.

Krishnakumar Because they're no alternatives. DailyMotion will always have a smaller userbase and is overly touchoriented, Vimeo is for graphic designers and companies and not for casual use.
