If you’re lucky enough to land a job interview at one of the best places to work in America, Google, you’ll definitely need to bring your a-game. But to pile on the interview stress even more, Google used to ask some questions that were so hard that they were eventually banned from being asked altogether.
In 2009, Lewis Lin, a job coach in Seattle, put together a list of 140 questions his clients were asked by Google. We've picked 7 of the best.

I would think that critical thinking correlates back to a software development position. Their job is literally to use critical thinking skills to solve problems.

There's a fine line between questions that provoke out-of-the-box thinking and those simply way off. Critical thinking would be one of the most important skills in problem solving, whereas esoteric knowledge isn't. And interviewees could be competitive in a way that they are meticulous or creative or articulate among other things, but rarely can a person be all of these. Good interview questions should allow people to demonstrate their abilities and individuality, as opposed to just sounding bad-ass. [ Just a clarification since many people are reading this, 'them' in my original comment mostly refers to brain teasers and strictly knowledge-based questions (I'm not assuming all the questions in the videos are, because my original comment was a response to the video description in an attempt to point out that 'so hard' isn't the most accurate description.) Just wanted to say questions are not banned because they are hard, but they may not be the most informative question to ask the majority of interviewees from time to time. ]

Alex Yang, yes but there's also something to be said about these difficult questions, what does the person do? Bluff? Admit they would need to think about the question for a while, etc. it's not always about providing the correct answer.

E50AK No, they meant that a square cover can fall through the square hole that it is sized for, because the diagonal of the square is significantly longer than any of the sides. The cover could easily fall through if it fell at an angle to the hole. Not so for circular covers and holes, since there is no angle in which the diameters are different.

the overlapping answer is incorrect. after every 1 minute the second hand completes it rotation. so it meant it gonna meet the hour hand somewhere in the clock for sure coz hour hand as well is in the areas moving. so they will meet after every min. then answer is 120.

Why are manhole covers round? They're not, or at least not all of them -- look around you, and you'll find plenty of rectangular manhole covers. so the question is really 'why are round manhole covers round' or 'what advantages do round manhole covers have over rectangular ones'? The reason given is just one of the advantages (least material for a hole of given area)

Not just square, if a manhole cover is any shape but round it can possibly fall through provided the hole is the same size and shape as the cover.

It takes 60 mins for the minute hand to do one full rotation, but by that time, the hour hand is at the 1hr mark, so ~5 mins later, they will overlap. 65 mins per hour, divide 24hrs by 65 mins = ~22 times.

Imagine hour needle and minute needle started at 12'o clock. For a minute needle to come to do full rotation it takes 60 minutes or one hour. In that time hour needle moved from 12 to next number marked which is 1'o clock, that is 5 mins from 12 to 1'o clock on a clock. Both needles passed each other hence at 65 mins, 60 mins moved by minute needle, 5 mins moved by hour needle. 24/65=22. 24 hrs*60 min=1440 mins in a day. Both units should be in minutes for next step. 1440/65 min= 22.15 times needles cross each other.

How many times a clock's hands question overlap in a day is wrong. You have to restrict the domain to exclude 0:00, if this isn't done, the correct answer is 23. If 0:00 (same as 24:00) is excluded from the domain of inputs, than the answer is 22. The question is the problem, not the answer.

ok,that question especially the first two is not that hard. The server explanation,while not useful in this case since you're not employed as a communicator is not that hard. That pirate thingy is probably removed because it incentivise bad leadership practice.the window thingy is stupid since you don't get to collect data and the last one i'm still confused the point is that it's not banned from being hard but it's probably banned because it's too easy or it's not correlated to the job

That clock question is wrong. I measured that shit with my protractor. Also, the small lines between the hours are divided into 5 fields, the end of the 5th being the next hour.. So, using 1/4 is wrong. Angle between each hour is 30 degrees and that is divided into 5 parts; meaning At 3:15, the small hand is between the first and second line and that puts the small hand in the second field. It appears at 3/4 of its way in the second field. So, the real angle is 6° + (6° x 3/4) = 10.5°.
@skullz1
@skullz1 6 жыл бұрын
nope. if youre dividing each hour into five parts that means each part is 12 minutes on the minute hand (i.e. the minute hand moves 12 units (mins) for every one unit the hour hand moves). 15/12 = 5/4 units moved by the hour hand. 6° per unit. 6 * 5/4 = 7.5°. doesnt matter how you divide it. using 1/4 is easier to understand though, because we know that 15 units on the minute hand is 1/4 of an hour, i.e. 1/4 of the 30° between 3 and 4. idk where youre getting 3/4 from, you just judging it by eye?
@MrMarcoUnico
@MrMarcoUnico 6 жыл бұрын
It's not wrong, you are over complicating it. You agree the angle between each hour is 30°, but you are being misled by the number of lines between each hour. There could be 4, 5 or even 78,000 lines between each hour; these do not determine what you divide the 30° angle by. 15 minutes will always rotate the minute hand 1/4 of 30° away from the hour hand, so 30÷4=7.5% 👍

Honestly I'm not surprised they stopped using them, the data probably told them it didn't help their employees with anything. These are basically just riddles- tricks that you have to see through, and are just used to try to feel superior. Riddle solving skills can be an accessory side effect of being intelligent, but is by no means a reliable indicator... It's not real creativity in most cases, just knowing the one workaround the question wants.

The 2nd one is not critical. It's just a simple formula we learnt in 9th grade: 0.5×| 60H-11M | Where, H is the hours hand & M the minutes hand

I honestly thought the answer to the why are manhole covers round would be along the same reasoning as why you don't cut square holes in the hull or bulkheads of ships. Meh, no Google job for me.

1 ) Manhole covers are round because covers are made up of concrete and they are easy to move from one place to another by just rolling from one hand . 😉 That's what I thought 😊

The pirate question was answered incorrectly because if you, the captain, die then someone else takes your place to propose a plan and lets say the same rules still apply to the next captain. Now, imagine that all but two pirates remain after all others have been killed. If that is the case, the captain gives himself all of the gold and votes for the plan so that even if the other pirate votes against it he will still get all of the gold. From now on I will designate the last remaining pirate pirate 1 , the second last pirate 2 and so on. If three pirates remain the captain cannot please pirate 2 since pirate 2 knows that if he gets pirate 3 killed pirate 2 gets all of the gold. Instead pirate 3 gives pirate 1 one gold piece and himself the rest, knowing that pirate 1 will vote for it because if he does not pirate 1 gets nothing, the captain obviously votes for it as well making up more than 50%. Pirate 2 now knows that if only 3 pirates remain he will get nothing, meaning he will vote for any plan that gives him one gold piece if 4 pirates remain. Therefore, pirate 4 , the current captain gives himself all gold except one piece and gives pirate two the other piece. At this point you may have noticed the pattern. TLDR: You simply give every second pirate one piece and yourself the rest. So you give pirate n almost all gold, pirate n-1 nothing, pirate n-2 one piece and so on.

The first one is not weird in any way. That is a question I often asked my mom when I was younger and honestly, that question is a pretty easy question to answer if you think about it. The second one: if you don't get the question (even after the hint) I recommend learning how to read time again. I guess 3 was weird, unless you live in Seattle XD. There's a TedEd video about 4 so I'm pretty sure that that one is not weird. 5 makes you think, it's a good question for an interview. 6, not weird again, it's a tech company do you expect them to ask you "So what's 2+2?". 7, hilarious XD. The majority of them weren't weird; Google is a tech company looking for bright minds, and these questions test your speed, critical thinking, knowledge, etc. If Google wouldn't ask questions like these, we wouldn't have the Google we have today because then it would be full of stupid people claiming they are smart.

1) Round and square aren't the only options for shapes of a manhole. The manhole cover is also 3-dimensional so it could concave or have parts to lock it in place and prevent it from falling. 2) An analog clock has an hour hand that rotates half a degree every minute. Since the question does not include seconds, 3:15:59 is still considered 3:15 so the answer would be acceptable between 7.5 and 8 degrees. 3) Why the hell would you be a basic bitch and only charge $10 per window? You would make the same amount for a small window at ground level as you would cleaning a larger window at the top of a skyscraper. You should provide an in depth equation including where the window is, how big it is, and if the employer would notice if the window was clean or not. 4) We are talking pirates! They don't live that long so you shouldn't feel bad if you pinned them against each other. Depending on how many pirates you will still need if you don't retire with the loot you should say it's a sword fight to the death and the last 5 or so standing divide the money instead of everyone getting small amounts and they will agree because they are greedy. When the tournament or massacre is over split the money with fewer people or use your gun to eliminate the exhausted and scurvy riddled victors and split the money with your damn self. 5) They didn't specify what kind of clock and since i have a digital, the answer is 0. 6) An eight-year old should be smart enough to Google any questions that he/she might have, if not good luck explaining anything to the dumb kid. 7) Not everyone has played monopoly because it takes too long and this is America so the man was probably robbed on his way to the hotel. Some people pose as valet and take your car so maybe he left his fortune in his glove compartment. Glove compartment seems like a poor name since no sane person wears driving gloves anymore. Honestly, fortune could also refer to a fortune from a fortune cookie and those little pieces of paper get lost so easily. Google give me a job
