This video provides you with a free Google Sheets template for tracking your net worth over a period of time. Using this sheet will show you how to make a net worth tracking chart. Tracking your net worth is an important step to measuring your progress to FIRE (Financial Independence / Retire Early) or just basic progress towards retirement.

Thanks for watching! Please use the 'Save a Copy' function to enable edit. Should be under the File menu in Google Sheets. I often get requests for me to give people edit access, but that would mean your personal data becomes the new template file... Which no one really wants. Let me know if you have any trouble.

I love this! However I can't figure out how to change the sequence to something other than monthy. I don't see any formula in the title columns so I have nothing to +. Actually I'd like to enter my own dates as I review in the future.
@MrGTMan002
@MrGTMan002 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Dale. I suggest you look at the tab or worksheet called "Input Sheet". Cell D1 is where the starting date is manually typed in. Going to the right from there, the dates are calculated with a formula that adds 1 month to the date (cell E1). For example in Cell E1, part of the formula is 'month(D1)+1' ... that is the part that adds 1 month to the date in cell D1. You can adjust that number from 1 to 3 if you wanted it to be quarterly, as an example. If you just want to type in a date, you can delete the formula and just type in a date there as well. Good luck! Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any trouble with that explanation.

Thanks for the comment - glad you like the worksheet and explanation. I put my kids college fund in the investments section. It isn't exactly 'liquid' and it's not expected to fund my retirement were the two main factors that caused me to put it there.

@@MrGTMan002 thank you for the tip. One more thing: I am going to do this exercise quarterly. I figured out adjusting the dates with the formula on the input sheet. Is there an easy way to adjust the dates at the bottom of the net worth chart? I don't want to mess anything up. It looks like on the summary table I can do it manually. Thanks again

I actually have added that feature on my own Google Sheets. What I did was select the cell right below the net worth (Row 46). Start a formula by typing "=", then arrow up one cell to the current month's net worth value, then type "-" and then arrow up and left one cell to select the prior month's net worth. Press Enter. This calculates the difference this month compared to last month.

Love the Template. Filled it out and it looks good. One thing is, on the input I get one figure for Net Worth and on the Chart I get something almost double the amount. Can you help out?
@MrGTMan002
@MrGTMan002 3 жыл бұрын
I think you might be looking at the bar instead of the line. The line on the chart is the net worth. The bars add up to show total assets and, on the negative side of zero, to see your total liabilities. Subtracting the liabilities from the assets gives the net worth, which is shown as a line on the chart. Does this make sense when you look at the chart now?

Great video and perfect level of detail in spreadsheet for me. Here is my problem. I see the spreadsheet is set up for users to enter data up to December 2021. My working knowledge of Excel is modest and even less for Google Sheets. I think I figured out how to extend data entry dates into 2022 and beyond for the Input Sheet and see it reflected on the Summary Table Sheet. However, those changes (additional test data I entered past December 2021) does not show in the Net Worth Chart but rather the end date of December 2021 seems fixed on the chart. I fear further tinkering on my part will break my spreadsheet. Can you offer a suggestion?
@MrGTMan002
@MrGTMan002 2 жыл бұрын
I will take look at the file to see what it would take to extend the range for the chart data as soon as I can get to it. For a quick fix, I think you could change the first date to Jan 2021 and then the file would show 2 years from that point on. Thanks for viewing and commenting!

I've tried using other wealth trackers before, but this one makes the most sense. Wondering if it'd be possible to change the currency from $ into €?
@MrGTMan002
@MrGTMan002 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Glad you found this net worth worksheet helpful! As far as changing the currency... I think that should be as simple as highlighting the cells and then clicking the number format... Find the currency symbol and change it to the C symbol. I will take a look later today.
@MrGTMan002
@MrGTMan002 3 жыл бұрын
So hopefully you were able to find out how to change the currency symbol. Here is a quick tip. 1) Click on the cell you want to change - test on one cell first, then click multiple cells to change a bunch at once. 2) With the cell selected, click on the "Format" menu. 3) Under the Format menu, click "Number", then "More Formats", then "More Currencies". Hopefully you will find what you are looking for in there.

hi - thanks so much for this but the formulas are only in the first column... shouldn't the formulas repeat for columns going into the future. I cut and paste the formula for the first column and laboriously revised the formulas for that column - it seems like there should be an easier way to do that. I am an excel and google sheets beginner, unfortunately.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I just double checked the template, and the formulas go across the sheet - for example on the "Input Tab", Row 2 and 3 formulas go across from columns D to AA. If you can provide some more specific cells for me to look at, I will take a look.

Were you able to figure it out? There would be a few steps... Add in some more rows on the input sheet. Copy formulas... check to see if they are working correctly. Expand chart range maybe. Let me know if you need some help and I can expand the template and make it available to you.
