Thank you for the tips, Crista! I especially liked the two dots (..) to search in a year range. I didn't know about that one. I have found amazing information on personal webpages. Sometimes the people who create these websites aren't active in genealogy anymore and don't respond to emails, but when they have pictures or cited information, we can at least track down those sources and leads. I'm amazed that genealogists in so many counties have transcribed and digitized records for free and ask absolutely nothing in return. How generous. I have found marriage records, probate records, welfare assistance records (for a grasshopper infestation destroying crops of all things), and all sorts of other details that really add depth to the life of an individual you're researching.

Great info! It's very important to remember to re-Google the same searches every few months, because info on the web is always growing and changing.

Thank you Crista. This is very helpful so I can use -mafia when searching for my Gambino ancestors. Those searches have been very frustrating and time consuming in the past. Now, I should be able to make more progress.

I just found this channel. I have been researching my family since last November. I have been really struggling to find my german roots. I can't seem to find people back in germany. Only in the US. Any suggestions?
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 7 жыл бұрын
Germany was not a country until fairly recent in history. So, in order to research German ancestors, you need to know where (specifically) in Germany they are from. If you have that information, try searching by region. If you don't, do some more research in U.S. based records until you uncover a place of origin.

Hi Crista. There is no Web Link on my Page. There is an Add Web Link but notghing like you explain, which is a pity. I am wanting to use my online tree. I am on Ancestry UK. Thanks. Ian
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 6 жыл бұрын
The ADD WEB LINK button is where you add information you find on other websites to the Ancestry Profile of an ancestor. The SEARCH THE WEB option was retired in Dec 2015 because of lack of use. The other information in the video is still useful (as far as crafting internet searches). Did that make sense?

hi Crista; One question pl. my Web browser is Chrome. yet in my FTM 2012, I'm in my tree but when I go to "Web Search" it awways opens-up in IE. and not Chrome. What am I doing wrong? HELP!!!
@TeriSueThompson
@TeriSueThompson 10 жыл бұрын
You're not doing anything wrong! IE is the default search engine in FTM. Not my favorite, either, but apparently Ancestry.com believes this is the best choice to work with their programs. Sometimes we must simply accept. :-)

Thanks Teri Sue. So there is no way to make Chrome to defult FTM... the one thing I've learned (from Crista was to right click on a link and open in a new tab). This I can't do with IE. :(

Warren Jansen Hey, Warren. It seems to me I tried doing just what you wish to do, but at the time I was having other issues, so I let it go. I have 2 suggestions: The #1 thing for you to do is place a call to Ancestry [1-800-262-3787 - Yes, I have it memorized. :-)] They will definitely urge you to use IE, but ask them if you CAN change it for your own personal preferences ... and if so, how? #2: If you CANNOT change to your preferred browser, you may still be able to accomplish what you want to do with tabs. I just opened IE. Click on the gear at top left - [Tools] - The select "Internet Options." Then there is a section for Tabs. Select that, and hopefully you will be able to set and use Tabs as you wish. No guarantee - I know little about IE myself. But now that we're talking about it, I shall try the same thing. Good luck! :-)

Sharing a web link is good, but what happens when that web address gets deleted or corrupted. You no longer have your information.
@TracyMinsterman

Good point. I use Evernote to take screen shots of any pertinent information. You can save it there along with the web link info for reference. Then, I save a copy of that image to the person's Media Gallery. Another tip is to go to that web link, and eliminate everything after the slash (/) - in order words go to the site's home page and then do a search for your info from there - most pages have a search option for their website. Sometimes it is just moved to a different page within the site.

How do you do these searches when you do not know the maiden name of the person your searching for? There are no birth, wedding or death records. There is an obit, but the cemetery has no records available as well as Find-a-grave. She wasn't married until the 1940s, so there is no 1940 census with her and her husband. All records found for her husband do not mention her anywhere. He was in his 60s when they got married. There are no marriage records for him either. TRUE DEAD END.
