It's that time of year, when cold north winds and migrating geese come to play. We weren't expecting to see to much of a migration, but we were in for a fun surprise!

I never figured out why people use the word molt anyone wanna enlighten me as to what it means?

Later in the summer, as the goslings are maturing, but still unable to fly, mature Canada geese "molt", meaning they shed a number of their feathers and new ones grow in. During this time, they are unable to fly. Following the "molt" Canada geese will often travel north. In this hunt, I would suspect some of the geese are from South Dakota or Southern Minnesota (not sure exactly where they are hunting). They travel north for a short period of time following the molt and then will migrate back south as weather will dictate. Hope that helps!

We refer to them as “Molt Migrators” for multiple reasons being; 1-2 year old geese that can not breed yet, they lost their breeding partner, or they bred unsuccessfully. With this they take those first cold north winds and travel south. You can refer to them as “Teenagers” or the unsuccessful breeders going on vacation early. It has nothing to do with their summer molting events.

@@SmackEMOutdoors Thanks for the clarification. The majority of local Canada's head north after molting here in NESD and I incorrectly assumed that's what was happening.

Article on Molt migrators.... The Misconception About Molt Migrators In recent years, more and more hunters have talked about the molt migration. The commonly spread belief is that every September, the molt migrators begin their return from the north, and the northern states like Minnesota and Wisconsin see great hunting as a result. But according to Dr. Nicolai, the September molt migration is just not true. While there’s plenty of truth to the good goose hunting each September, it’s not the molts that head north during the summer. “In the August and September season, we’re shooting breeders and new goslings,” said Nicolai. “The management strategy is to shoot these lower latitude breeding geese before the molt migrants and arctic geese show back up. The molt migrants aren’t back yet in September, they actually spent the summer with cacklers and snows, and return at the same time as them.”

Very controversial topic for sure. Every year in early September we get significantly more birds through our area and see birds flying south way up there in the sky on the north wind days. On this specific morning it was a 400+ bird feed and we ended up with 12 by 8:30 in the morning that all came in low from the south. The rest of the birds we shot came out of the north from wayyyy up in the sky and it was mid morning from 9:30-11:30am. I’d like to think they were birds on the move south but who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@SmackEMOutdoors i was always under the impression they were molt migrators too in sept that we shoot. Def migrators but apparently not the molts. I dont knownwhqt to believe anymore. Our flyway regs change every year

I agree they are definitely migrators and that banded bird was a year and a ½ old which fits the “molt” description
