I film from my aeroplane and during my walks that involve panning the horizon and the sky. I conduct various tests to find the best GoPro settings to stop the very frustrating choppy or stuttering playback that spoil the finished film quality. AND, I have my answer. 😎

Like many of the people leaving comments here, I'm hugely greatful for your time in show casing a fundamental flaw in what should be a premium camera. I thought it was a simple fault in my camera until I come accross your video. Like you I've been using GoPro for years and loved the 7 black, simple but silky smooth footage. My 10 black still isn't perfect at Cinematic 4K, 120...so I've tended to use 2.7 | 120 and it's working well. Thank you 🙏 😊

Thanks for taking the time to test all of these settings. This problem has ruined otherwise lovely clips for us. While it isn't perfect, this is way better than before. Much appreciated!

THANK YOU. We vlog in narrow when we're talking to the camera, but I could never figure out WHY this was happening when I would pan across things. OMG it was so annoying. Definitely taking the time to do this moving forward.

Thanks for posting this video. I recently purchased a Hero 10 and noticed the judder when panning as well. I tried your settings and it was much, much, smoother. I then experimented with your settings, but using 2.7K and 120fps instead, and it was as smooth as glass.

Thanks for this great video! We experienced stuttering pans quite often with our Hero 10, and this confirms my suspicion that the Hyperboost is the primary culprit.

Thanks for this, and for having the clarity of mind to try all these steps. I was getting so goddamn frustrated in the field that I’d just put the GoPro away and use my mirrorless or phone. Appreciate it a lot.

Wow, thank you so much for this!! I have struggled for the last few months with the stuttering videos from my hero 10 black. Have gone through hours of research online to find your post. I appreciate your thorough test and finding a solution. Since I am using it for real estate, I use your settings but go between using linear and wide lens depending on the shot each will work for me. But the surprising thing is that it works best in only one direction: panning from right to left, but slowly as you suggested.

Thank you for highlighting this problem! 11 black works same way, thats why gopro is useless for cinematic. SV mode gives awful optical distorsions. Solvetion is DJI osmo pocket2, even with poor sensor but properly cinematic shooting. Now I have both and I'm very dissapointed with gopro and this issue

Cant wait to try your solution. I just got a gopro and was panning in linear today and noticed the jutter during playback and I have an 11 so the problem has not been corrected. The camera also seemed to have a problem staying in focus as I was panning so I will try the 7 second rule. Hopefully you will make some more gopro videos. I would bring this to the attn of gopro if you haven't. thank you.

Thanks Steve, good luck. Unfortunately, like all these big corporations, they devolve the technical issues to the forums and don't want much to do with you once you have bought their product 😒

Thanks for testing all those settings! Switching to shutter 1/120 also helps to significantly reduce choppy playback.

Thanks for the video. That helps a lot. I think the biggest game changer here is not using linear...

After having the same issue with the Hero 9 I found Super view good as well. Just need to do some tests. This panning issue has also made editing a lot harder. Thanks for the vid mate.

You saved my life!!! I had the same problem. Too bad this problem is mainly in linear mode. I hope Gopro will fix this in the future. Thanks a lot for this video 💫😊

The really annoying thing is that GoPro know all this but just deny all complaints and leave the forums to argue.

Thanks a lot for this video, it really helped me out, as I had been searching for a solution for over a year now! Best settings for me seem to be lens on Wide, then Hypersmooth on standard. Hypersmooth on High seems to make it a bit worse. Also, possibly lens on super wide would be even better, but it makes the fov too wide for my purpose.

Why don't these pieces of tech work straight out of the box? The public have become Beta testers.😒😒

Also if you wantto use a 3rd party stabilization software, then you definitely want hypersmooth turned off. In fpv drone flying, the smoother you are at controlling the model and things like throttle control, actually having hypersmooth turned off is beneficial to being able to see certain flight characteristics. In some cases the hypersmooth creates problems.

No, this was my own solution but I'm sure you will find the offending setting if you work methodically through each option, one by one. Have you got a fast read/write card? Do you format using the camera, not a PC? Is your firmware up to date? I hope you find the answer.🙂

Using 60FPS solves the problem in my case, 30FPS to a somewhat lesser degree. Most of us are watching on 60Hz screens. Hence 24, 25 and 50FPS look awful. Watching your video I see under "stats for nerds" that it plays back at 50FPS (fifty) for some reason. This does not fit to a 60Hz screen.

Yes, there are various screen refresh rates depending on device or country standards. It's tricky navigating all the variables. The tech companies are happy to have us do all the research. 😏

Thanks for this. I will give the settings a try on my GoPro Hero 9 Black. It's driving me mad as I film hotels and it seems to be getting worse! I used to use Linear all the time so stopped that and have tried switching off the Horizon Leveling to see if that made a difference. One thing I did think of is I always use the Max Lens Mod so might try without that. This vid I made on a fairground ride which highlights the juddering kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o6iokpCkuMjdp4E.html

@@SuperRealityKid just out of interest do you have the max lens mod attached? I tried taking mine off and it was fine with the standard lens and no juddering/stuttering at all.

@@bellagio1066 Interesting Mark. No, I don't use the lens mod, although I have one. I think I realised that all that extra demand on the processor, with the amazing horizon levelling, something got to give. 🤷‍♂
