Thank you, Frank for that great explanation of ND filter usage on the GoPro! I dig that 52mm adapter and seems like it could be cheap way to get ND filters even to buy used ones and be less than the Polarpro…but those Polarpro look good, too. Thanks for the great lesson and info!

New sub for you! ND’s are amazing. We use a similar set from Freewell. Pop off GoPro lens and screw these on. It makes a world of difference when shooting in bright sun or white scapes like snow.

With the 52 mm adapter recording in superview or hyperview, the adapter is not visible in the image, is it? It is cheaper than the polarpro and there is my doubt whether to buy although I have doubts that it can be seen in the video...

Is there a way to use nd filters with the gopro and get motion blur with stabilization on without getting the notorious jitters in the video that occurs when shooting at a fixed lower ss other than turning stabilization off and adding stabilization in post editing?

You would have to use a gimbal ... But still with stabilization off

Yes - first, make sure that your quad is tuned properly. Second, if that does not work, then use 1/4x frame rate instead of 1/2x frame rate. I use ND filters all the time on my FPV drones and don't have an issue. It's not the slow shutter that causes the issue (the gopro does not use the image to stabilize, it uses the gyro - it doesn't care what is in the image), it's that if you have jerky, random movements that are not in the direction of travel (consider hiking for example), you get motion blur in all sorts of directions. When you stabilize, you end up with smooth footage, but with motion blur implying movement in directions it's not going (ie the random movement). So that ends up looking weird. The stabilization itself works perfectly, it's just that you get left over movement in the motion blur that doesn't exist anymore because it's been stabilized. FPV drones are typically ok because your motion isn't random and jerky - usually it becomes a problem when your tune (or filters) is off or if you have mechanical issues that are causing vibration under 200 hz or so. here is a more complete explanation: camerabutter.com/en-ca/blogs/the-camera-butter-reel/nd-filters-and-hypersmooth-the-real-story-and-solution (btw I own this company - our filters are better than the PP ones and much, much stronger.
