What makes Gordeeva and Grinkov the greatest pair skaters of all time? Many things starting with their charisma . Katia’s physical beauty is spectacular and Sergei’s quiet sex appeal covered in shyness and humility and innocence is so disarming he melts one’s heart with just one of his incredible smiles. They were both so genuine and innocent. Nobody can match them . Nobody

At 7:52 begins a slow motion repeat of their multi-jump sequence. I just spent about 10 minutes pausing-playing-pausing and am again in awe of their unison, but it’s more than that. At any point in the sequence you stop, their bodies’ rotational positions, and the relative positions and angles of their feet, legs, and arms are beautifully aligned. Watching the slow motion in even slower motion, the only differences I find are that of Gordeeva having to swing her free leg further away from her body than Grinkov did to get enough power to launch the opening axel, and sometimes the rotational position of their heads is slightly different. Given such size and weight differences, to be able to jump and land at the same time, just by the simple laws of physics, there MUST be some mechanical differences in execution-the relative power and torque each needs for the axel comes entirely from the swing of the free leg, so naturally, to match the “hang time,” Gordeeva must widen her swing and/or Grinkov must shrink his. Similarly, the position of a skater’s head, and how closely limbs are positioned to the body, affects the rotational speed. For them to have the same “hang time” and land facing the same direction-meaning be in the same rotational position-his body actually has to spin a little faster than hers. Even recognizing those differences, and the mechanical reasons for them, their execution remains surreal. That the “adjustments” they made to “skate as one” are so small as to be unnoticeable in real time, and they were so consistent, is simply amazing. I think part of it is that they were taught all their basic skating elements by the same coaches even before they were brought together to skate as a pair. I also think the knowledge and experience of the coaches that paired them play a big role. At the very least, they recognized the similarities in their bodies’ proportions, even when both were far from fully grown. In My Sergei, Gordeeva mentions just one practice session for older boys that she and another girl joined. It was after that session that coaches put G&G together as a pair. My guess is that their similar proportions were recognized prior to that practice, and seeing them skate at the same time revealed other similarities in style and approach. Being under the same tutelage for their entire individual skating development, suggests that coaches also knew the strengths, weaknesses, and yet-to-be-fully-realized potential each possessed and how they complemented each other. I imagine also that their temperaments were considered. If you haven’t guessed it by now, I think the coaches that brought them together were brilliant and don’t get enough credit for G&Gs success 🙂 I also think the role of ballet training is underestimated. Ballet was included in their early individual training, and continued as a pairs team. Just another opportunity to be taught the basics in the same way from the beginning-developing core strength and balance, learning how to hold your body, your arms, hands, feet, and head, and developing a sense of musical expression. Then to put those fundamentals together with a choreographer like Marina Zueva at a young age. I love how Gordeeva describes working with her-how Zueva would describe and elicit the “why” behind their movements. I imagine that when skaters share an organic vision of what they want to express with the music, it contributes to matching their movements on the ice. Still, it had to take a tremendous amount of work, tenacity, and commitment to achieve their level of excellence. And none of that would have mattered if they weren’t both immensely talented to begin with. I haven’t seen this discussed anywhere, but I’d guess they each excelled, or would have excelled, at compulsory figures. It makes me wonder if we would have ever seen them as a pair if they came of age when compulsory figures carried significant weight in singles skating. Either or both may have been world and Olympic medalists as singles skaters. Still, other pairs teams developed and were trained under the same system. Many of them that stayed together were great. But none matched the quality of “two skating as one” that G&G did. And for that I have to credit some divine intervention. To me, G&G’s work was art that, even 24 years after their last skate, I still come back to watch for pure enjoyment of the beauty. It is a gift 🙂

@lisastiles1408 Жыл бұрын
@@stephaniek1076 Oh gosh, I missed that! Hmmm…rethinking it…I still think she would have been good at them if she had to be in order to achieve success. However, given the incredible speed with which they skated-and she still skates!-and that she seems like a natural go-go-go kind of person, it’s not difficult to imagine that she enjoys challenges of “Faster, Higher, Stronger” in a quite literal sense. Past a certain threshold of training and skating skills, it seems to me that the qualities that separated senior competitive figure skaters that excelled at compulsory figures were patience, and, hate to say it, age. In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell posits that it takes 10,000 of practice for a person to become an “expert” in an endeavor, and uses examples of musicians and athletes. Two thousand hours is the rule of thumb used as the number of hours someone working a typical full-time job of 40 hours a week, with weekends off, some holidays, sick leave, etc. So it would take five years working full time to accumulate 10,000 hours. I’m not an expert, but I’m fairly certain that, even in the era of compulsories, skaters didn’t practice figures 40 hours a week. I doubt they could spend 20 hours a week, every week, over a period of 10 years either. In short, it would be all but impossible for a 15 year-old skater to accumulate anywhere close to the hours of practice, and the same number of repetitions, as a 25 year old skater.

They skated first. It was that simple. Had they skated last there would have been 6.0s. Plus you don't realize how great something is sometimes until you look back at it. This performance is the benchmark against which all other performances will be forever judged. They were the GOATs of pairs skating even though others might have done harder more jam packed programs later on. There has never been anything like this before or after. The guy mentions Rodnina/Zaitsev. They look like beginners next to this. Rodnina skated like she was in the military.
