I had to stop listening to his music after my divorce. I learned he died in a text message from my estranged daughter, who I hadn't heard from in 11 years. She said she heard he died and she broke down crying. She remembered me singing his songs when she went to work with me. We are due to meet up to get reacquainted this Summer.

Missing the man and his music. I learned to play listening to Gord and John Denver. Left the navy in 74. Ended up on the street in San Francisco in 75. Played Gords songs there for change. I have everything he ever did. I have copied every piece of sheet music and have every recording saved. Thanks Gord. Through everything Ive been through in my life, you were there with a song for it. I am also from Orillia and Gord and my dad were friends. When I was a little kid, he came by our house. Sitting on our couch, he pulled out his 12 string and played Sundown and Pussywillows and Cattails! Heard "Sundown" on a transistor radio in the 70s as a little kid. Still remember being entranced by the sound of the guitar & hypnotized by the lyrics even though they went way over my 5 or 6 year old head. RIP Gordon 😞

I've seen him concert about a dozen times over the decades. When my daughter was 7, I took her to see him (it was the first of over 50 concerts I've taken my daughter to); when she left for college years later, the only thing she took with her, aside from clothes, was the pic of her backstage with Gordon's arm around her. A gentleman. An icon. He will be sorely missed.

GL is a permanent musical fixture in my life. On a snowy night in Toledo in 1983, I held hands with a date as he sang "Song for a Winter's Night." Magical, even though it turned out to be our only date! Years later, married for over 20 years, the actual love of my life and I finally saw him together. There is so much loss in the world every day that sometimes one becomes inured to it. But Gordon Lightfoot's passing has made me weep. For the starkness of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald bring up memories of those of us from coastal towns standing around in fear as the gales of November came early. To "If I Could Read Your Mind," helping me break up with a fiance. And the concert where my Uncle Mike and I shared a magnificent evening sharing our love of this amazing singer-songwriter and person. Rest in Peace, Gordon Lightfoot. May your memory be eternal.

I woke up this morning at about 5 am and checked my phone. I usually don’t do that so early, but I guess I had a premonition. Gordon Lightfoot had passed away at age 84 in a hospital in Canada. I knew it was inevitable. He’d been in bad health for over 20 years , but was still playing over 100 shows a year , up until he cancelled his tour several weeks ago, for the rest of the year. I knew the end was probably near. But he’d cheated death so many times. In 2010 , there was a death hoax and Lightfoot had to call into a radio station and tell them that he was really still alive ! You wanted to believe, “well , maybe one more time.” His passing kind of takes a chunk of your youth from you. He was born in Orillia, Ontario in 1938, a town of just over 30,000. He wrote about trains, ships and relationships (although he wasn’t real good at the latter), being involved in one of the biggest divorce settlements in Canadian history many years ago. He wrote over 400 songs in his lifetime and even wrote one about a Hula Hoop , back in the 50’s. Although I never met Gordon, I ‘ve seen interviews and he seems like a humble fellow, who doesn’t seem to understand why so many people would love his music. I think he’d be a nice guy to have dinner with . I saw Gordy three times over the years. Once with my daughter when she was about 10 years old at the Old Temple theatre in Saginaw. She was an instant fan too. I have over 3,000 records and cd’s and when people find that out , I always get the question,” who is your favorite singer or band?” That’s a tough one to answer, but Lightfoot is always in the top half dozen. But today, he’ll be my favorite , as a I plan on listening to his music and going back in time, most of the day. As I look out the window and the fog is starting to lift, I can’t help but wonder, “ what song would Gordon Lightfoot make out of this ?” The sun has went down and Gordon is now on his Carefree Highway. ……Today there are a lot of Rainy Day people out there. Neumeyer
