Gordon Murray reveals the secrets to his new 663bhp T50 supercar. Better than the McLaren F1?

Gordon Murray takes me round the GMA T.50 and explains why he decided to launch this new supercar now, which he sees as the rightful successor to the mighty McLaren F1. With a bespoke 3.9litre Cosworth V12 that pumps out 663bhp at an incredible 11,500rpm and weighing only 986kg at the kerb, performance is going to be astonishing. Yet there's enough luggage space to make this a usable GT. The T.50 looks to be a truly amazing new supercar..

Every detail Gordon covers here is absolutely perfect. But there is just one small detail I really don't like. Those rearview screens look hideous, they need to be integrated.. almost as bad as the Tesla floating iPad! Everything else I can't argue with, I logical mix of analog and digital. It all makes sense

Murray is a gentle genius. He doesn't need to impress us, his work does it for him. And on top of it all he has an unbelievable aesthetic eye, designing beautiful and efficient cars. I'd compare him to Nathaniel Herreshoff, who designed the most beautiful and the fastest racing yachts in the early 20th century. His F1 cars were the most beautiful and the fastest of their periods, like the Brabham BT-52 or the McLaren MP4/4

Murray proves something Chris Harris said “Let the engineer give you the car he wants to design”. Not using focus groups etc. It looks so small for what they have put in it. One man comes along nearly 30 years ago and designs a car that knocks every high performance car out of the park. That car is still regarded as the finest sports car ever made. Ferrari have been making cars for 80 odd years and haven't come close in engineering terms. Here is another car that the Italians will never catch . Mans a genius. Formula one is the same, the "Garagestas" came along and rewrote the racing script. UK never doubt yourselves we have some amazing people, and i know Gordons from South Africa, but he did everything here and could only have done it here.

John Simard That’s got nothing to do with car driving. Just like F1 is the pinnacle of motor sports, light cars with ultimate handling capabilities is the pinnacle of sports cars. Straight line performance is of inferior importance. That said, I have no doubt that this car will crush Tesla’s 10.5-10.4 quartermile time. The McLaren P1 does the quartermile in 9.8, and this will almost certainly be faster than that.

Agree he has made the car how he envisioned it to be. My only worry is the engine. A V12 is almost obsolete today let alone in 2 years time when the car will be in production. Emissions and subsidies are going to be bit of an issue in the UK and Europe. I guess the clients for this car will not worry too much, but V12s are not used nowadays for a reason. In saying that, a naturally aspirated V12 makes an amazing sound and are great fun.
