The closest, was a truck stop servo which had two golden retrievers living there, and they'd wander around the grounds get pats from the customers, and sit under the outside tables waiting for food droppings. Everyone loved them. (Well, except for one person). Sadly, they've both died now.

It might actually be arsenic poisoning! Depending on how old the inn is (if it’s been around since the Victorian Era), the green paint/wallpaper in some of those rooms could be laced with arsenic. The color green (specifically Scheele’s Green) was very popular at the time, and manufactures used chemicals such as arsenic in order to obtain those bright shades.
