In this review, we are excited to finally check out the GORUCK GR3! We’ve put the GORUCK GR2 through some extensive use over the past couple years and it has held up as one of the most durable packs in our arsenal. We’re curious to see what changes GORUCK has made with the GR3 and how they could improve a bag that we’ve found to be fairly close to flawless.
GORUCK’s tagline for the GR3 is “The Largest Possible Carry-On,” and they are not kidding. This thing is massive, coming in at a whopping 45 liters and just barely fitting into the one bag carry-on travel category. The official dimensions are 22” high by 14” wide by 9″ in diameter. It’s not going to be carry-on compliant for all airlines-especially outside of the U.S.-so we’d recommend doing a bit of research with your airline before you get to the airport.
In addition to being large, the GR3 is also quite heavy when empty-5.15 pounds with the hip belt and 4.59 pound without. Yes, the hip belt weighs half a pound. We’ll get into specifics later, but that thing is no joke.
As far as materials go, GORUCK says that the materials they choose “are proven to thrive in war,” which is as equal parts impressive as it is slightly terrifying. This thing is made of 1000D CORDURA® ballistic nylon, which is just about as good as it gets when it comes to backpack materials. Besides being ridiculously strong, it’s also highly resistant to scrapes and abrasions, which is great. We’ve noticed that the stitching on this bag looks really sturdy and durable as well-the handles and seams feel really solid.
In addition to the sweet ballistic nylon, this thing is covered in heavy-duty YKK zippers. Given the materials and our previous history with GORUCK packs, we’re pretty confident this pack will hold up for a long time.
Overall, the GORUCK GR3 is a huge, super rugged pack that is at the literal size limit for one bag travel. It’s got a slick, minimalistic and/or tacticool look-depending on which version you go for-and offers some great customization with a few sections of MOLLE. It lacks any major interior organization, but makes up for that with an inventive interior velcro/MOLLE system for packing cubes and gear pouches. The only main complaint we have is with the compression strap system & it not being hide-able. Other than that, the GR3 is a solid option for the one bag traveler who is looking for a large pack that will stand the test of time.

I would definitely appreciate that comparison video. I understand the whole concept of minimal single bag travel and it seems a lot of the videos just focus on the size of the pack with airlines' allowance. How come weight is never mentioned? It's great to have a 40L GR2, but that bag alone weighs 5lbs. Some airlines allow only 15lbs for a carry-on, so that leaves only 10lbs to pack (clothes and laptop). Some laptops weigh almost 5lbs with is charging brick, so that leaves 5lbs. Please weigh your pack after having your cubes in there so we can have a more accurate reading of a 40L, not just the dimensions but also the weight. Thanks Pack Hacker!

I'm looking for larger packing cubes to fit into the GR3, as a base layer, like in this video. I like the Eagle Creek stuff but their largest cube the PACK-IT™ REVEAL seems too big for this bag. Any suggestions on other larger sized cubes that could fit?

I'd by the GR2 if it had side handles (like the GR3, but those aren't centered and I do want the option to carry it like a briefcase). Quick question. Very interesting. I'm wondering how this will fare as a checked bag though? As a shorter guy, this is too big for me to comfortably carry-on, but as a checked bag, I think it might be a nice alternative to rolling luggage. Because of the way GoRuck designs their strap and laptop compartment I wonder if I can actually stow the straps into the laptop compartment, and the bottom attachment loops into the hip belt pass-thru so I won't have any straps dangling around? Anyone know if that's doable? Can the straps fit into the laptop compartment, all zippered up?

Hey Josh! The main thing you'll get with standard roller luggage is a harder compartment. Although the GR3 is super strong, it's not going to provide hard casing for items like a standard, hard suitcase would. Doesn't mean it won't work for checking the bag, but that's something to keep in mind if you have fragile items inside! As far as the stowing of the straps goes, there's not really an elegant solution GORUCK provides. You may be able to work out some MacGyver-ing, however, the laptop compartment only opens up 1/2 way, making the far strap hard to stow.

Hey poorpolarbear! Tom here. Hard to say and it depends on your torso length as well. GR2 34L could definitely do 6 months of travel and the Minaal is a good choice too! I love one bag travel, what do you recommend for a 30 to 35 liter bag with a hip belt. 40 liter bags are too much I know I can get away with 30 or 35 liters, but have not found the right one yet.

Hey Tom, love your review videos. There's a bag out there with very few reviews from a travel perspective. If there's a way for you to snag one somehow, i'd enjoy your review on it. Its an american made pack by Spec Ops Brand. Its called The UAP.

Very cool review. Do we know if goruck will include the new features in the Gr1? These bags are like the iPhone of backpack, very fancy features and expensive and getting bigger (screen) for every new version 😂

Great review and also just enjoyed your Outlier pants review. This looks like a great bag and has some nice features including the laptop section.BUT, I have some issues with it as a one bag, travel anywhere item. It "may not be compatible" will all airlines carry on limits. That's a deal breaker for me. Its not that light as the bells and whistles in terms of added material and features adds weight. At 2.2 kg it eats into the international standard of 7kg max carry on. It's very expensive at US$455!! As a comparison I have been using the Mei Voyageur bag the last 10 years. Similar materials over a Lb lighter and made in the U.S. Is the largest size allowable for international carry on. Has an awesome harness, a detachable shoulder strap to use as a sling or can be carried brief case style. It doesn't have a laptop section though. Doesn't have the molly attachments etc but that makes it super light for the light as possible purists like me. The kicker is its only $135 US. Thats a huge difference. 10 years of international use and the material has not faded or ripped. Not connected in anyway to the company. Im just an Aussie who loves to travel light.

I own several Goruck backpacks the problem when traveling with these, is that they are very heavy and they take away from the weight limit when traveling on any airline. I had to check several times my GR2 basically carrying my electronics on hand while I was on the plane.

Hey Alex - thanks for sharing your experience with us. The GORUCK GR2 is very heavy weighing 2.15kg without anything in it, so it can become an issue with airlines that have a lower weight threshold. Hey azazelRising72 - yes - it's fully integrated with the pack when attached. There's more absorption if you compare it to the GR2's attachable MOLLE hip belt, too. Of course, this all depends on your height & torso size as well, but it does the job well.

Hey Draphilius - the GORUCK GR3 just about fits into the one bag travel category because at 45L this pack is pretty big. We haven't tried fitting this under the seat, but depending on what airline you're flying with it's going to be a pretty tight squeeze, especially if this bag is fully packed. We also recommend taking a look at the airlines you're flying with for their individual specifications. In addition to this, you can also check out our Carry-On Compliance feature on our full written review. Although this is a guideline for carry-on compliance, if this pack isn't carry-on compliant for a certain airline, chances are it's not going to be able to fit under the seat as a personal item either. packhacker.com/travel-gear/goruck/gr3/ Hope this helps! - Rebecca

Good morning from Athens, Greece. You do make nice videos as far explaining the true abilities of each bag sice the needs of each individual are different. I wanted to ask you about the prices of bags like this.why are they so expensive? Is only because of the materials?thanks in advance and keep up the good job!

Hey Kostas! Thank you! Agreed - everyone's need is different when it comes to packs. We usually go for packs that are durable & will last a long time. The GR3 is definitely on the expensive side (one of the most expensive packs we've reviewed). Most of it is because of materials. High-grade nylon, Big YKK zippers, (and, in the case of GORUCK, made in the USA, which tends to be more expensive). With more expensive packs, our thought is to buy one expensive pack once vs replacing a cheaper one every couple of years. We may get into more budget packs soon though! Especially if we're able to do a long-term test and verify durability. - Tom

Just unboxed a GR3, and my first thought was in line with a lot of these comments -- damn, it's heavy! Got it to compare with an Arc'teryx Assault 45 (formerly Khard 45, just barely over carry-on dimensions, but hear you can skate by), which I'll probably keep regardless of other potential comparisons, because it's awesome. Also considering a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45, but I'd primarily use it in backpack mode. I've never handled one in person, but it looks like it'd suck as a backpack when fully loaded. I also have an Osprey Farpoint 40, and it's a bit small -- and awkward to pack, when including a laptop -- in both carry capacity and body length for me. Looking for something at max US airline carry-on dimensions, for casual business and vacation travel. Thoughts?

Nice! We've got the Aeronaut 45 on our shortlist and are curious about the harness system, too. As far as the max US airline carry-on dimensions, for casual/business/vacation, you've got 2 good options on your list already :) We haven't reviewed either of these, but have you taken a look at the Patagonia Black Hole? packha.kr/d8qa How about the Tortuga Outbreaker? packha.kr/q984 - They're both "blocky" and sized for maximum carry. Pack Hacker thanks for the suggestions! I'd looked online at the older version of the MLC (not the Black Hole), and wasn't sure about its strap system either. I've seen some more recent reviews for the MLC which look more convincing, and the Black Hole version seems nice (if a bit on the colorful side). I'm dubious of the flimsiness of the sailcloth material on the Tortugas (for shape retention, and durability), but otherwise like their functional style.

We ran into some durability issues with the Tortuga Homebase (mainly aesthetic marks on the sailcloth - still works really well though), however, their new Setout is larger than the Homebase AND it has a Polyester exterior if that's your jam: packha.kr/eb16 (we'll have a full review up soon)

I'm considering getting one of these but I have one major concern, it doesn't look very comfortable (compared to the straps and back padding of the osprey farpoint 40 or something) and I know it's a bit of a subjective question but do you personally find the bag comfortable? Could you happily walk to a hostel a few miles away and not complain about the arm straps or back padding getting uncomfortable if you were carrying 7 - 10kg worth of stuff ?

They take about a month or two to break in, but once they're broken in, they're super comfortable. Never had an issue!

The problem with Gocruck packs is that they are VERY heavy in weight. 4.59 lbs? It weights more than (2) ThinkPad 14" x1 laptop or about 7 days of cloths. People who choose to travel with backpack instead of roller usually prefer a lighter bag. The difference will be day and night especially in summer.

I have decided to return the GR2 and purchase the GR3 and a 10l bullet ruk. I have the Gr1 26l, the 30l kit bag, and now will have the GR3 and 10l Bullet. That should allow me to mix and match for small and long trips. The GR2 is great but sometimes to much organization is best. I’m excited to have that 4 bag combo and should be able to mix and match as needed.

I have had my GR1 for 5 years now and it is still in great shape. This bag has traveled the world and I have certainly abused this bag. The only problem is that I would like a little extra room sometimes. It’s such a difficult choice between the GR3 and GR2

I know this is an old post now, but I bought a GR2 initially, sent it back for a GR3. I now also own a GR1. They complement each other well for different levels of travel. I just felt like the GR2 was very inefficient with space since it is 2 compartments.

@@Denali_Rebel 34L GR2. I have the 26L GR1. The GR3 is big, but I am 6’1”, so it doesn’t feel huge to me. I use packing cubes though, and feel like there is more than enough pockets for my “loose” items. I typically travel with the GR1 paired with a Recycled Firefighter 72-hour Duffle. It is pretty heavy walking the long treks through airports, but it feels so much more nimble than dealing with a rolling bag. GR3 is used much less, but I am still glad to have it. I plan on using it next week on a trip paired with a Retrospective 7 camera bag.

Pack looks cool, but way too heavy for travel. Some of the budget airlines now limit carry on to 7kg. Not much left for contents then! Good to see that the MOLLE webbing is now optional. It looks too tactical for my taste, and there are certainly countries where you don't want to be associated with anything military.

Absolutely correct! The 7Kg rule is in effect on many Euro airlines so 1-2 more lbs on a naked pack is a deal killer. Since this is carry-on luggage it's overkill to have heavy bomb proof materials. More important is weight and size

Tbh , this backpack reminds me both Standard's Carry-On Backpack and CabinZero Military Backpack but the price of Goruck again is insane. I undersand this to be a value for money but still and thanks god there is a plethora of other variants to choose from

This one is pretty cool BUT ive lookin for a very speciall Backpack ... There is a Commercial of it even on KZfaq wich shows how the Backpack is loaded with Wood and then throw by a CATAPULT over 50 - 80 Meters and nothin happens to this Backpack In the Commercial also Dude to see wich wear Army Gear PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME IF U KNOW WICH ONE I MEAN

Looks pretty cool but no way i could afford a $400 pack on my min wage salary. I was lucky and get a Dakine ranger basically new for $59 which seems like a great pack for people with less money to spend.

Heavy af for a backpack. That is a big con...5.15 lbs eats up a lot of that weight limit for carry on. 33% for a 7 kg limit to be exact

That is not MOLLE. You are right, MOLLE is supposed to be a universal system, tacked at specific intervals for interchangeability. GoRuck has deviated from that standard so as to make only GR pouches fit perfectly. Standard MOLLE pouches will not mount square on GR packs, and my GR pouches will not mount square on non GR packs. Try it. It was kind of disappointing to find out.

Pack Hacker I’ve got 2 GR 1s, a GR2, and attendant GR mountable pouches just so it doesn’t come across like I hate the company. I’m pretty sure the rationale was related to money, which I wouldn’t care about, except that when Companies say MOLLE customers expect all their MOLLE stuff to interchange, regardless of manufacturer. I’m super curious to hear what they say though.

Yo Lightspeed 1138 - that's a lot of GORUCK gear :) Here's what we heard back from GORUCK: "Standard molle is spaced 1 inch apart and in 1 inch intervals. However, most tend to be spaced slightly more to almost 2 inches which is how wide out intervals are. Our molle is spaced wide enough for most molle to function but our bottom molle is a little different since it is thicker and spaced even wider."

Pack Hacker I’ve gotten better but yes I have a thing for packs. After the word “however” their reply is just tap dancing. “Standard MOLLE is 1 inch apart at one inch intervals, ours deviates from the standard”. End of discussion. Pack Hacker hi Rebecca I’m afraid I’m a bit of a backpack “ho” and swap between the Aer Travel Pack, Tortuga Setout 35l and the Tom Bihn Brain bag depending on how I’m feeling and nature of travel. Tend to use the Aer for business and Tom Bihn for more leisure trips. I don’t own the GR2 (yet) but I see that the Aer Travel Pack 35l and the GR2 40l dimensions are neigh on the same (GR2 22x12.5x9 vs Aer 21.5x13.5x8.5) so not sure why GR2 34l is always recommended over GR40l . Any ideas? 🙂

Hey pebble888 - it sounds like you have a great system going on here, thanks for sharing this with us! We tested the GR2 40L and it's a solid pack. When it comes to deciding on the size of the backpack, it really does come down to you and your travel style. The difference in aesthetic, weight, size and carry are all factors and what works for one person, may not work for another. I like GORUCK as a company and the challenges, but their bags are overpriced. They took the rather outdated 25+ year old "3 Day Assault" pack design, made it in a couple different sizes and quadrupled the price. There are many companies that produce USA made packs, out of 1000d cordura, with much better designs, features, and organization at around half the cost. Triple Aught Design, Tactical Tailor, Grey Ghost Gear, Mystery Ranch, and LBT are just a few off the top of my head.

I owned over two dozen backpacks and have to say Osprey has the MOST comfortable packs! My only grief is the lack of organization and too many loose straps on some models. If I have to walk a greater distance, it is my pack of choice.

No, there is no comparison at all. I used a Farpoint 40L for several years and used it to travel in over 10 countries. My last 4 trips, 3 to Asia and 1 to Europe I used the GR3. It is very much superior to the Farpoiont. The Farpoint is a lightweight flimsy pack that will damage your laptop if you load it full. the GR3 is solid in every way, and the laptop compartment is the best in the business. GR3 is the king of travel packs for one bag travel!

@@PackHacker I'm actually considering this 3 bag right now. Aer Travel pack 2, Dew Avail 35L or Elveden Hunter from Elveden London. Since I currently live in tropical country, where we only got either hot and humid or raining. So the ventilation is kinda priority for comfort carry.

Price is hard to put as a con because it's relative to each person. We try to focus more on value. For instance, GORUCK products have high durability and a solid warranty. In practice, these packs will last longer than other cheaper packs, so to some, the value is worth it! But of course, you're entitle to your opinion and conversations like this are what make this community great!

Pack Hacker while the do have an S shape to them, where they meet the top of the pack, they look kind of thin. This is where I feel they will eventually tear from the bag. I realize it is a ruck, but sinc it is, ultra comfortable, well built straps would complete the bag. Other than that I like the shape, look, and size of the pack.

Hey C Leh - thanks for the follow up! Yeah they're certainly not AS padded on the top area where the strap connects, but we've found them to be pretty reinforced. After 1.5 years of nearly daily use with the GR2 (that uses a similar strap setup), we haven't had an issue. packhacker.com/travel-gear/goruck/gr2/
