Pat & Kevin were kind enough to have a chat with us about their seminal superhero satire, Marshal Law. Enjoy!

Such a criminally underrated book. As an American, it never dawned on me Marshal Law was intrinsically British, it was simply a comic I loved. I first read Marshal Law as a child in the late '80s, and it has been an all time favorite ever since. Marshal Law was to me what Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns was to the larger portion of the comic community. That was the comic that showed me the darker underbelly of the superhero genre. I still question why anyone would sale Marshal Law to an 8 year old, but God bless 'em.

To me, Marshal Law will always be my favorite comic work. I still remember the day that I just saw the first one in Brazil. I fell in love with such ideas put together by Kevin O'Neill and Pat Mills. Each page I read made seem like I was inside the comic as Marshal Law myself. The 80's was really the golden decade of humanity. Great artists and minds

Marshal Law has some of the best writing in comics, and the art style and visual comedy fits so perfectly with everything that it really stands as masterpiece. There's a definite need for more Marshal Law.

Wonderful to see these two creators chat about something I loved as a young man. Things happened to me as a kid that shaped my taste in comics into something more hard edged and at some point I naturally gravitated towards works like Nexus, Watchmen, and Marshal Law. I was, and am still, a peaceful person so reading the comic felt a bit wrong at the time due to its extreme violence. I had to question myself, my motivations, and the material constantly. It was a bit of a journey of self discovery as the young me examined the question “is this OK?”. Turns out it was more than OK. The themes in the work shine and I feel like I gained something from it. Oh man, if someone ever made a film of this... it would have to be perfect. I am not sure that balanced get act could be accomplished.

Fabulous and informative interview! I will have fun looking for the collected edition of Marshall Law - which is easier than fishing out the original books from my storage unit!

I hate that we don't have British and Commonwealth comics in U.S. comic stores. And all the British comic fans only review American comics and that pisses me off also. British and other Commonwealth channel owners need to make some Commonwealth Channels for stories, characters, and other ip categories because i know they have small universe but I'm sure they also have large ones also i'd love to learn about!!! I don't know with all the comics they come out with over there how they don't have channels for all their comics like we do!! I know they do its just the internet sucks and blocks them from american internet or my computer!!

This is a great interview, tho as a middle aged man who started reading 2000ad at the age of 10, I am slightly biased due the fact im a fan of both Pat and Kevin. I tried several times as a kid to get into american comix (both DC and Marvel) but they never floated my boat. My view of the stuff coming out of the US was, it seamed a bit flat, without depth and boring. Batman had my interest for a bit but I detested Superman, Spiderman and the other super-heroes of a similar ilke. Dredd, Slaine, Jonny Alpha, Nemesis, ABC warriors, Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat, Mealtdown Man, Blackhawk, all had far more interesting characters with a myriad of really interesting stories. The Superhero stuff was about good versus evil and how good will always triumphs, because they try harder. Boring. Dredd and Marshall Law are the best anti heroes I've every read and would love to see new Marshal Law stuff. splundig vur thrigg

Mr2at I agree, I read both U.S comics and U.K comics, but when it comes to the U.S stuff I read anti heroes because they have more depth, superheroes are one dimensional and boring. From the US I can recommend comics like Lobo and Evil Ernie, Lobo fits more into 2000AD than DC, and Evil Ernie is just over the top fun, which again would be more suiting to 2000AD, I find independent publishers to be better than the mainstream ones. I really detest superheroes though, every story is the same, you know what will happen. My heart is with U.K comics, probably because I'm Irish and I can relate to them more, or more likely I prefer them due to the depth of the stories. I really don't understand how the superhero genre is so popular.
