@@ronz303 well... yes and no. The underlying structure is all in 4/4, yes, but all the other patterns are in different and mostly multiple meters that shift relative to that 4/4 structure

Its more like a lot of time signatures over 4/4 you can think it in a lot of ways, its not always 4/4 but you can count it like this

@@kampen9868 "time signatures over 4/4" That's called a polymeter. Yes something other than 4/4 is being played but the music is in 4/4. That's why the "odd time" parts go over the bar. The band members themselves have explained that it's in 4/4. The cool thing about it is when you finally train your ear to hear the song in 4/4, the groove feels like 1K tons.

Yes - the drum cam is entirely on the drummer, but thats partially the problem - the song should have featured More of his leg work, because it is That which is the most mindblowing part about the drum parts of that song, and Not what he does with his hands by keeping time, _most of the time_ ...

Like they said below, it's 4/4. All the polyrythmics are patterns on top. For really crazy double bass work, check out the drumcam version of their song Bleed!

Thomas Haake is one of the best drummers in the world. His polyrhythms are seconds to none. I've played double double bass for near 40 years, and I'm still not close to the technical proficiency of this master of the kit. Listen to Bleed by these guys. It took Thomas 6 months to learn it. That's dedication.

I have seen them live more than a few times and it is even more mindblowing watching a bunch of 50plus dudes kill it. That whole band is on another level. They helped create a whole different sound of metal. The singer used to play guitar and sing these crazy time signatures at the same time. These guys deserve so much more kudos than they get. Great video man. Have you seen Infant Annihilator Cuntcrusher play through? Disgusting sounding, yes. But keep an open mind. That young dudes drum skills are another completely different beast. Actually you're both right. They use polymeters almost everywhere, so most sections are both in 4/4 and also in some odd meter (usually multiple odd meters, since there are some shorter bars to sync back up with the 4/4 pulse).

Tomas used to play Vic Firth and had his own signature stick through them. In 2013 he made a change, and is a Wincent Drumstick endorser, and uses the Wincent THS (Tomas Haake Signature) stick.

I would like to say thank you for liking and understanding the whole sound of the song instead of just focusing the drums and discounting the strings or vocals. Metal and especially extreme metal get passed by a lot of people cause they can't understand the lyrics or the guitars sound like a typewriter but you took into account all the elements and the wall of sound and came out a fan.

Love this! Glad I found your channel!! I’m a double kick player. But I’ll be honest, I definitely did not master the single first. I kind of just always wanted to use my left foot as well on the kick drum. I ended up just starting from there and developing with it always there. Now I sit on a single kick set and I suddenly have to throw out all these fast doubles and triples just to mimic my normal style. Lol! Have a great holiday! I’m gonna go ahead and binge your channel.

I gotta say, to see a gospel drummer react to this is epic. Gospel drummers are absolute beast technicians when it comes to musical approach. I hope you apply some of this to your playing and melt faces. Love your perspective btw. I'm sure someone already said this, but if you get the chance, catch them live, it will change your life more than it has now just reacting to it.

Using double pedal is indeed really hard at first, it took me like a year and a half to get past the first speed barrier (which was around 135 bpm for me) now I can consistently do anything around 160-170? But it's still really hard to get past that, despite my 4 years of playing with doubles

1987 til today that is a long amount of drum exp, probably best drummer alive today, guitars are 8 strings as well, use base strings on the top strings, to get that deeper tones.

Tomas is a beast. Not just his chops but the way he uses double bass in a technical way, not just straight 16th notes. He plays distinct and complimentary rhythms with his feet. Another drummer to check out is Tim Alexander of Primus. Jerry was a race car driver, DMV, Tommy the Cat, Wynona's big brown beaver have really good double bass work.

from what ive seen in many videos he has 3 hi-hats, one open and one closed and one he can open and close with his foot as usual. now i cant remeber every song of the top of my head but i belive that they are all made in a 4/4 but they poly the hell out of them with ghost notes and one over and under and sick fills etc. and what their music is depends on who´s listening, for a "metalhead" its just kickass music and for a musician their songs are basiclly masterclasses. (drummers and guitarr players i know have said to me atleast)

He's not only using a double bass pedal - he has two pedals for his left foot, the other one for the high hat. Most of the song is expressed through a single bass pedal.

Im definitely a double bass player, just picked up that china cymbal he uses the Sabian AAX xtreme 19 china. This is definitely one of my favorite bands, that bell Brass Snare is absolutely the best sounding thing I've ever heard. A thick brass snare is high on my list! keep on rocking man, I really appreciate you commenting on the singer, cause yeah hes a beast, and yeah the mix is sweet! FYI this band is so legendary they have an entire subgenre of metal that has formed in their wake called Djent which is an onomatopoeia for the sound the guitar and bass band a "djent". Other notable bands include Animals as Leaders and Periphery. But you definitely know Animals as Leaders drummer Matt Garstka cause he is hottest drummer in modern metal by far!

Guitar bass and drums sure gotta memorize some crazy complex patterns. They must practice like crazy in order to play this stuff live without missing a beat. Even when it’s staying in the same poly meter for a while, they’re still changing up the pattern constantly. Crazy

Meshuggah related but not Meshuggah. Fredrik Thordendal (lead guitars in Meshuggah) made a solo album in 1997. I use two pedals. It takes a good 15 minutes to warm up my legs enough to do what I want though, haha.
