Did you run a marathon under the qualify time for the 2024 Boston Marathon and get your BQ... only to have the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) deny you an entry? You are NOT alone.
This year, over 11,000 qualified participants qualified for Boston but did not make the 2024 Boston Marathon cutoff time.
I hope this touching story will help you feel less alone about not running Boston in 2024.

That jacket. It is also huge and while they did actually make an XXS the expo had none. So I am swimming in the 2023 one. The sad part is they have me the butt cheeks bc I get that damn jacket every year.

Heck, I DREAM of running a BQ and not making the cut-off. I would frame the acceptance letter officially acknowledging that my qualifying race was accepted. I would hang it in my pantheon of running gods of serious runners.

Serious question: if it wasn't for the qualifying times and hobby jogger prestige, wouldn't Boston just be another mid big city race in bad weather? Good for them for turning a mediocre event into people's whole personality and mission in life.

@@paxtonebright2951 unpopular opinion - since NYC is harder to get into via qualifying standards, it's more prestigious to have run that race over Boston. Of course the lottery and 9+1 BS messes that up so if you've done it, people don't necessarily think you're a decent runner.
@TheSeriousRunner
@TheSeriousRunner 9 ай бұрын
Yes, qualifying for NYC is harder, but if you tell someone you ran NYC, no one assumes you're fast because of the various ways to get in. If you tell someone you ran Boston, people assume you're fast because most people assume you qualified.

Aging up is not necessary. I have only gotten faster over the years and this year BQd for an age group two ags less than my age. Keep working and it will be when, not if, you can turn right on Hertford and left on Boylston and see that glorious Boston Marathon finish line just ahead!

Missed it by 57 seconds this year! Figured my 4:32 cushion would be enough since no cutoffs last two years. Anybody miss it by less? I know a guy who missed it by 4 seconds! Gut punch.
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 9 ай бұрын
That has to hurt the most-missing by a few seconds or even ONE. It was when the cutoff got to about your cushion that they lowered the standard by 5:00. I think the surge of new runners and people returning to running may be the reason suddenly this year had so many more qualifiers than the last two.

They should be able to widen the field or find other ways to fundraise at that point. Because then you end up with elite runners and recreation runners who buy their way in with fundraising. It would almost be better to hold a lottery... At least that would be more "inclusive." If you qualified, you qualified. The end.

Those keyboard warriors seem to be hard at work on social media whining about the BAA, saying they should be kicked out of the Abbott Majors (even though Tokyo, London and possibly Berlin are far more exclusive to foreigners than Boston) hating on charity runners (all marathons have big charity programs), blaming the Bank of America for not changing the policy or paying more $ (they probably only pay the winners’ purse and certainly have nothing to do with acceptance policies) and on it goes. The most annoying part is this is nothing new. These must be very young, uninformed runners.
