Got a cough that just won't quit? You're not alone

The strength of viruses and immune systems that may be out of practice are contributing to lingering symptoms this cold and flu season, some doctors say.
CORRECTION (Jan. 23, 2024): A previous version of this video referred to the term immunity debt instead of immunity deficit. The term immunity debt is relatively new, cropping up during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its definition and implications are still under discussion.

I had this actually, for years. Chronic bronchtis, every 6 weeks I'd get very ill. I'd be fine at home. A few of us filed a complaint with OSHA for sick building syndrome. We found the building was infested with bats and an endless supply of guano... 180 days after the complaint, all 3 of us who filed the complaint, got "laid off".

An intense post-covid cough has lasted 2 and a half years and counting, even *with* respiratory physiotherapy it hasn’t gone away. At this point one must ask whether more people (including doctors) need to understand this kind of damage can be a permanent risk of covid infection.

Immunity debt? What people that actually got COVID? Is their immune system out of practice? Many of my friends that would get sick before the pandemic would get stuck with a lingering cough for months. Also people tend to get sick more during the winter because they spend more time indoors. There were other viruses that still existed during the pandemic as well. I dont think the flu took a break during those early years of the pandemic. Sounds like a strange explanation
@WistfulWitchoftheEast
@WistfulWitchoftheEast 7 ай бұрын
Immunity debt is not what is going on. Talk to the doctors who know that the damage caused by covid impacts the effectiveness of the immune system,. So rather than an understimulated immune system, what we are experiencing is an immune system that has been weakened due to infection. We don't know if it will be permanent, but it's certainly long-lasting. I'm hearing many experts comparing it to HIV.

Even pre-2020, I had that lingering cough that took a year or more to clear. The family doctor told me it could be stress-related. Of course I was confused, I was fine otherwise, but I still tried to tone down the stress in my life and I guess it helped. At least in my case.

A family member has had this type of cough for many months now. Inhalers seem to help a bit in this case The air gets quite dry indoors in the winter time, this can increase irritation and coughing as well I hope this lady finds a treatment to calm her symptoms! As a former elementary school teacher who has dealt with an immense amount of germs, I would recommend that this lady cough « in her elbow » and not in her fist to avoid spreading germs via her hands, just some friendly advice 🙂 Take care!

No, this is a different cough. I have had it since the two Covid vaccines and yes my asthma is now worse. I take puffers but a drink of fairly warm water helps. It is worse in the summer or with lots of rain- mold. I had Covid Dec 2019 in Ontario but of course it was not in Canada. Anyway, Covid voice was my clue later on or I would not have taken the vaccines.So my allergies are obviously worse.

There's nothing that unusual about a cough or upper respiratory infection that lingers for weeks -- even 8 to 10 weeks. Once an infection makes it down to the bronchial tubes, it can stay there for a long period of time. Dry environments, the presence of multiple viral and bacterial infections, poor sleep all contribute to this, which I and many others have experienced many times over the past decades of winters. Immunological deficit sounds like an interesting theory, but is there any real evidence for it? We were more isolated in 2020, but later came omicron which supposedly infected the majority of the population. And then some got long covid. People returned to school and travel, well before the flu and cold season started.

And in my own personal opinion,And when a person coughs that kept going on for weeks,And it means that person is suffering from viral respiratory or lung infection and he or she should take life --- saving anti --- biotics and should be under Doctor's care at all times.And also,People who always experiencing lingering coughs are very,very and very vulnerable to suffer from respiratory diseases like tubercolosis also known as T.B. that often contagious including pneumonia and asthma as well as sinus/sinuses that always caused terrible headaches.

Bro what??? It's because lockdowns and social distancing were effective that this is caused. If you need it explained in simple terms, it's like how if you drink a lot you build up a tolerance to getting drunk, but if you stop drinking for a while and them drink again, you are more likely to get drunk quicker.

@@mck59er People have some immunity to things like common cold and certain strains of influenza, because they come and go each year. Covid-19 was different. Nobody had immunity to Covid-19 because it was a novel virus. We did not know the damage it could do, and measures were taken out of precaution. Now that we are no longer immunologically naïve to covid-19 due to previous infection and vaccination, it can be better managed and its morbidity and mortality better predicted. Its not correct to say that covid-19 precautions were a mistake and as a result we are worse off today.The "immunological deficit" theory has not been proven -- it is just a possible explanation.

After 30 years away from Canada and finally back, I am suprised that they did not solve this. They did not solve this in Hong Kong either. I guess it is not in the medical research. Someone has to give me a lot of money to share this. From what I see from my evil relatives in health care, I am not going tell from my research. Medicines is the public channel that everyone is shared. What about the private unknown ones?
