Thank you for the help! I just paid a local company $100 to digitize 4 tapes, after a $25 discount. I have a VCR running through a $30 Best Buy RCA to HDMI 1080p upscaler that gave me better images than I got from the local place. So I decided to buy a $20 HDMI to USB C video capture device. Downloaded OSC for free, Avidemux for free and an AI denoising program for free. I'm getting results that blow what I paid for away. Now my videos look like they could have been filmed today.

Good job! Although for $25 you get what you pay for. If you add up the money spent on hardware then tack on the time with your day to day salary / hourly at your day job and tally all of that up, then tally up rendering time, combined total, that’s the actual rate of a quality transfer!

@@gotmemories I had the VCR (and another) already. The two devices only came to $75 and they've been perfect plus the software is free so not much investment. The process doesn't require any babysitting from me. Hit record on OBS and play on the VCR then walk away until the the tape is done. Once the video is recorded, feed it to the AI denoiser and walk away. Almost zero time investment from me unless I edit the dead spaces out of the videos using Avidemux (free) and I'm getting excellent quality results. Definitely better than the "$125" value I paid for from a local place for like you were saying about some of these "professional" places. All they did was record the tape from beginning to end with no editing, no upscalling, no AI clean up and worse hardware. Now, could a true professional do better than I am, I'm sure, but I can't imagine by a whole lot. I think if I had my VCR tuned up it would be even better. But point being, you were right about these crappy tape to digital places that do the bare minimum, they aren't worth it.

@@ibjeepr yep! It’s basically coming down to now all of the players worn to shreds & not maintained or replaced. Your vcr at home prob has max 100 hrs of use. Transfer companies 10,000 for units never made to be used more than 1000hrs absolute max AND your tapes were in good, well kept shape, but 70% of people have kept their tapes in awful condition, humid garages, damp attics, covered in dust and god knows what else and all that crud and junk grinds down the internals and your tapes are thrown in with that filthy muck and they blame YOUR media as the problem! It’s a giant con. First question to any quote ‘where have the tapes been stored and send a photo of your collection with cases off’ anything neglected is charged appropriately bc it kills the equipment and anyone that has cared for their stuff gets better rates.

Nudging? Where? Which part?

@@cra2cra226 took the top off, there are two screws as described in his video one toward the top left and top right of the tape. If you follow the literal tape once the cassette is loaded it will pass over the column the screws are a part of. His video describes adjusting them using a special tool… while playing I was able to clear the picture by manipulating the column. But as expected the problem returned when I tried another tape/ejection and replacement of any tape. The screw really does need to be adjusted properly. If you get creative you might be able to adjust/rotate with fingers or two micro tip screwdrivers.. but the problem is that using a made up tool does not allow you to be delicate enough to adjust while the tape is playing which is key.

I had to buy a remote to fix the tracking because it wouldn’t work with the buttons on the vcr

I have that exact problem on some old tapes I'm trying to convert right now. You should have a link to that special tool in your description so ppl can buy it (and you get a cut). EDIT: Nevermind, seems like you can just use a flathead. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otaAiM6U0MDNno0.htmlfeature=shared&t=115

Yes you can use a flat head but it’s a bit tricky sometimes, but easy enough if you’re just doing it once.
