In my very little experience, i think the cleaning rollers should remain stationary with something wrapped on the for cleaning while the tape moves around them at a consistent speed for optimal cleaning. Currently, the rollers spin along with the tape, which may not provide the most effective cleaning. I'm from India and work in the same profession. Although these specialized cleaning machines are no longer available, I manually clean VHS tapes in a VCR, which is quite time-consuming.

Mr. Memories, Trying to play a tape and all I get is blue screen. Pause it and you can see a distorted image, sometimes almost clear. Don't think it's the camcorder (Sony) because another tape plays perfectly fine. All in the same camcorder. The tape did play perfectly fine years ago. Will these tapes degrade over time? Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like the tape could’ve gone bad but only way to check is to run through different camcorders trying to replicate the same outcome. If it’s the same problem on 3-4 camcorders it’s the tape.

@@gotmemories Could be the camcorder. I put a different tape in and got blue screen with the timer not counting. I thought it was completely blank, but it wasn't. Going through several other tapes I found out frequently I had to eject and put back in several times to where it would start playing. Some were ok and some you had to fiddle with, even with the same brand. Since everything is digital now the camera had been sitting for quite a long time. Just recently I wanted to capture some events on the computer. Unfortunately the tape I really wanted is the one that could be bad. Cheers!

If your film has a gold strip on the underside of the film then it has sound. 95% of super 8 is silent but Dec 1975 Kodak released Super 8 Sound. Google it.

Borrowed a friend's Mini DV camcorder (Panasonic) to play and transfer and several of the tapes I have are HD so I'm getting the "wrong tape format" error code. From what you say, these need an HD camera to play, is that right? Both worked fine on my (now dead) Canon camcorder, but it's an HD. Also, many of my tapes look fine but have glitchy sound. I bought a Panasonic Head Cleaner and just ran it. First try, it seemed to help a little, second try, a little better still, but still glitchy. I understand it's not advisable to run the cleaner tape more than twice, is that the case? What are my next steps? Thanks so much - I'm sure I'll be sending some of these precious tapes to you because you're obviously the most knowledgeable about WTF you're doing!

I have a Beta cassette that is full of home movies my grandmother took to Kodak 30 years ago and transferred from Super 8 onto cassette. The bulk of it is from the 1960s-1980s. It is the only copy in existence. I sent it to a photo transfer lab through Walmart and they returned it to me saying it was unviewable. I'm heartbroken but I can't bear to get rid of the tape.
@gotmemories
@gotmemories 10 күн бұрын
Well first off you don’t hand any priceless home movies over to minimum wage outlets like Walmart who then outsource it over to low bid, min wage companies like Yesvideo who do their work. You’re very lucky to have received it back, so count your blessings there. More than likely nobody even put it in a player because the company that does the work for Walmart is terrible and again pays min wage unskilled labor that don’t care and probably tried to put it in a vhs player and thought hmmm and handed it back with an excuse. OR their beta player was so filthy and worn they couldn’t get a picture off it and blame your tape vs repair and maintain their equipment. This is the massive systemic problem across the industry, lack of equipment maintenance and low wage, low skill staff and a consumer base that thinks this type of service with 40 year old media can be transferred flawlessly for $25 a tape. You ONLY hand priceless memories to pros with insanely amazing reviews and a KZfaq channel and are charging actual, real world rates to do this all correctly. Consumer ignorance is keeping the shady businesses afloat and putting the excellent ones out of business.

I saved the VHS C Sharp camcorder and Tapes my father used for a while starting in 1986. I hoped I’d be able to use the camcorder to view them and record to a computer. I pulled the camcorder out yesterday and it’s not working, just happily flashing its lights red. I am afraid to try the VHS adapter units because I remember having problems and a couple tapes damaged back then. My plan is to purchase a working camcorder that supports video playback to watch/record the tapes. I’d appreciate any tips or suggestions you might have to share with me? I did a batch of vhs tapes with a new SVHS player I picked up from ebay. Auto tracking, really nice machine. I noticed, there was a sort of uneven black border just in from the right side, like a thin, slanting border that's just there the whole time. Not huge, but it's there, but only on the right side, not the left. And it showed up on a lot of the tapes. And it isn't snow, which would indicate a dirty VCR. So I'm worried maybe something in the VCR is slanted or off somehow. But then I have an old copy of the Lion King on VHS and I popped that in to test it and the black border type thing wasn't there. So should I take that to mean the problem is with the degraded state of the tapes and not the vcr? If my "test tape" looks fine?

@@gotmemories I figured out the mysterious black border line.. I'm using the same Elgato cable you guys are, and in preferences there's a checkbox marked "preserve source format". I had this checked on, and the resulting video was 720x480. So it included a bit extra on each side, including the material that would normally get cut off by overscan. And when this option is unchecked, the resulting video is 640x480, so its cropped a bit, but it is cleaner. My instinct is always to preserve as much of the image as possible, but normal customers may appreciate the cleaner edges and not miss the extra bit on the sides. Add to this, the 640 files are formatted with 1.0 pixel ratio (square), and the 720 file is .89 pixel ratio, which is close to DV standard ratio (?). And the internet has been thus far unhelpful in determining which of these is preferable. I'm torn.
