Oxygen sensors are one of the largest contributing sensors to your vehicle's fuel trims. A malfunctioning sensor can cause all kinds of havoc on your engine. In this live webcast we are here to talk about not only how an oxygen sensor works, but also how to test and verify its functionality. We will also be talking about the problems that can cause oxygen sensor failures as well as the problems you can run into when once one has failed.
If you like what you see please subscribe, thumbs up and share our video. We appreciate you watching! Head out to our website and subscribe if you would like an email reminder every time we have a live class! www.wellsve.com/

Just changed my upstream O2 sensor on my 1999 Saturn SL. Yes, it’s still running great. I cleaned throttle body, changed plugs and wires, cleaned and re-oiled my K&N air filter plus other parts. The car ran great until it warmed up. Finally my service engine light came on. Took it to Advance Auto and they said O2 sensor code came up. That was actually what i was suspecting. I didn’t have the understanding on how it worked or just how important it is for engine performance. So with a new O2 sensor it runs like a top. I won’t be convinced that everything is working until i take a longer drive and I’ll know. I was wondering why my damn fuel economy went to hell. I was always getting 38mpg on average. This is highway/city average. Highway normally 40+ mpg! I love my old Saturn and will drive it until it dies. Thanks for your informative video!

This is the best video I have seen on O2 (Lambda) sensors. I taught F.A.S.T.(Factory Authorized Suzuki Training) at MM I(Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) 2006~2011. Even though some of the info is simplified it makes it easier to understand. I would not have been allowed to explain anything that was not approved curriculum but a few students were always interested in how and why things work. The information was much more difficult to find back then (except in technical terms majority wouldn't understand) I'm going to link this on Facebook as several of my former students stay in touch and are still interested in learning 'more'

ike's confidence and knowledge and preparedness comes through in his presentation. In spades. This all is critical to the viewer/student: if the instructor is "um"ing and "uh"ing, it results in losing the attention of the student. I've signed up for class notification due to Mike's presentation. He's a class 1 pro! Sign me "one who used to do training"; it's not easy.

WOW i am blown away by the fact that you can destroy an oxygen sensor by applying dialectric grease to the connector. I think back to all the years Ive replaced oxy sensors that malfunctioned a few months after, I so thoughtfully greased the connector. I just spent 100 bucks replacing a NEW upstream oxy sensor TWICE cause my so called mechanic friend told me "be sure to apply dialectric grease to keep water out and stop the corrosion. two months later that new oxy sensor was unresponsive!

Hey JD Kaz, these codes are for both post cat sensors. What's the likelihood that both cats failed at the same time? All 4 sensors share a power and a ground. Also, these are heater circuit failures, so it's not a cat issue. I would investigate both heaters and see if they are open. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Kind of Joseph. The PCM is manipulating the fueling into the engine which in turn makes the oxygen sensor go from rich to lean, rich to lean. The sensors are switching in voltage because the PCM is changing fueling. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

answer is D because its only needs to be cleaned from any grease because sensor does onle 0.2 -1.0 apprx volt so grease will mess it never apply any grease on a low voltage circuits to avoid short or interferences

Thanks for the very kind words Miguel! I am glad you are going to watch more! I must say though, tech school is a great start. No matter how good these classes I make are, they don't beat hands on learning like a tech school can provide. As for you Nissan, what code are you getting? I'd be happy to help! Test don't guess right? Thanks for commenting! Actually technician B is not correct. The rear O2 sensor commonly will not switch, it should remain much more steady. The correct answer was Neither tech. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

THE ANSWER IS D NEITHER. this is because die electric grease can add resistance to low voltage circuits causing ecm to get wrong voltage signal. and to answer the second question is because we don't know if the oxygen sensor is at operating temperature and 500mv is the bias voltage sent from the ecm so we know that is working.

Christian, that is correct! The answer was D. The dielectric grease can also block the airflow for the reference chamber. Well done! Thanks for commenting! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Does o2 sensor compare o2 in exhaust air with outside exhaust air 2? if there is grease on o2 sensor part, out side exhaust pipe then will that grease cause rich or lean?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes the 02 sensor samples outside air to compare it to the exhaust gas. This are comes through the wires many times. That's why you don't want grease in the connector. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

I wish I had found this video ten years ago, it would have made the effort to learn all of this less painful. Even so, you've done another excellent review, Mike. I love this kind of scientific review. By the way, one issue I've always wondered about is the correct choice for antiseize compounds in various applications (not just O2 sensors). I've got nickel and copper antiseize, but wonder a little about when I should reach for one over the other. I believe around salt water there is a third option, and even an aluminum antiseize. Is it correct to assume that the choice rotates around the risk of electrolytic reactions?

I have watched it and now understand the principal of O2 sensor, but still have a question to which I can't find the answer anywhere on the internet. When I connect my laptop to a Nissan 300zx via Nissan data scan software I can check the O2 sensors. The question is: does the O2 sensor work all the time ? (at idle) In my case looks like they do nothing at idle but as soon as I open the throttle (1400 - 2000 rmp) O2 sensor gives a signal.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Gintaras. Thanks glad you like that video! Yes, the front O2 sensor should be switching at idle. Sometimes it takes a little bit for it to warm up and begin switching, but once warm, you should see it going from about the .9V to .1v mark at idle. First thing, make sure you're looking at the FRONT O2 sensor. Second, make sure the heater is ok. Maybe the heater is not functioning and the sensor is not getting hot enough at idle. Good luck! Robert, that is an interesting viewpoint. I agree, if you understand the basics it makes the more complex newer stuff easier. You have to build that foundation. Feedback carbs are an ancient system, and to be completely honest with you, I know very little about them. When I was in Tech school years ago they didn't really even teach carbs at all. Everything driveability started with early fuel injection for me. I guess everyone starts learning at different points, but as long as the basic system knowledge is there we can all learn the new stuff together! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Very nice commentary Mike in your discussion of narrow band O2 sensors. And with the O2 waveforms being shown on the two vehicles, ties it all together. On the second vehicle, it's obvious that it needs an O2 sensor and a fix of the oil leak. Is there any chance there will be a follow-up on the GTO to see what the actual problem is with it? Thanks again Mike and say hello to your co-worker also.
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Stuzman, yes we are going to get to actually fixing the GTO, probably in the class following widebands. I am planning to get into diagnosing specific lean or rich conditions. Different test procedures to look for vacuum leaks, or fuel issues, or whatever, but we will be fixing the GTO! :) Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

I have an 03 F150 Lariat with high negative fuel trims, and a P0401 code. I have replaced everything in the EGR system (as well as several other parts/sensors) and all 4 O2 sensors plus catalytic converters. Any ideas what could be causing that?
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining Жыл бұрын
Hey Jared, This engine has a tendency to have EGR passage restrictions behind the throttle body gasket, where the hot exhaust gases from the EGR valve meet the cool intake air coming through the throttle body. To clean passages remove the EGR valve and throttle body. ~Ryan

@GoTech I have done all of that, I recently replaced the intake manifold. So I went ahead and cleaned the entire throttle body, passages and all. They were actually quite clean already.

@GoTech my Bank 1 Sensor 2 O2 sensor is fluctuating voltage like the upstream sensor does...that's not normal is it? The bank 2 side slightly fluctuates, but it's mostly flat lined. Could the downstream O2 sensor on the passenger side be messed up and giving false readings for fuel trims?

i got P0420 on 2014 Nissan Patfinder Sl AWD on cold day. P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) should i change the O2 sensor, Air Fuel Ration Sensor, or Cartalyst converter? please advice
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, honestly the first step would be to perform proper testing on the 02 and the air fuel ratio sensor. I wouldn't go throwing a catalytic convertor at it at this point before testing those 2 sensors first. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

Great video Mike. Would the o2 on a cold start be sending any form of signal to the pcm? My 04 Ram 1500 5.7 will race like heck on a cold start (25-3000 rpm) then drop to idle. Once engine is warm the starts are normal. I have no codes
@GoTechTraining
@GoTechTraining 5 жыл бұрын
Hey K Smith, no, the O2 sensor doesn't send any signal until it reaches operating temp. It requires a certain temperature before it starts creating the voltage. Does this racing cold start rpm seem new? What are your fuel trims once you enter closed loop? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
