I go over the steps involved for laying out your jig to start glueing the arches for your Gothic arch greenhouse. I used cedar 2x6x10’ lumber ripped down on the table saw to 1/2”x1-1/2”x10’ boards. I used 4 boards and 6” spacers every 12” except I used a 14” spacer at the base of the arch for more stability and attaching to my walls or foundation
For additional information please feel free to email me at smoothpools@gmail.com
I’m happy to help if I can

Your greenhouse looks much more eye pleasing than the kits offered by the big box stores. Thankyou for the instructions

I have been building these for years . A few things I have learned .the chord length will deflect a maximum of 1/6 of itself. That is a 12 foot length will support an arch that is 2 feet deep, soaking the material in water or hot water aids in its flexibility. Wet wood can be glued with urethane construction adhesive, it sets with water. Rather than pulling a curve onto horizontally placed blocks, it uses less material and is more efficient to push the form down into risers that form the curve. I fix my blocks onto the top chord glue and air staples then push it down into the vertical risers tacking here and there with screws,no clamping necessary, then apply glue to blocks and push the inner chord down onto that assembling the truss with air construction staples. Undoing the tack screws it pops from the jig . You can expect 10 % spring back. I layout the curve as a catenary arch. This I found is the simplest tech , I could never understand the massive area and sport to construct horizontal platforms and blocking and clamps etc. A vertical form requires no platforming and can be as simple as hammering stakes in the ground.. for planning select three points one midpoint offset by 1/6 and drape a chain connecting the three, the curve formed is the layout of a catenary arch . Plan using scale grid paper transfer the measure and angles to stakes ,vertical risers, miter the tops and the form is ready to press your trusses.

Hi @paulhayes9832. I find your method very interesting, but I was trying to follow where you set the 3 points and how you drape the chain to form the arch. Can you possibly give more details of this process. Thanks, Anthony

@@anthonygiancarli9089 the chain length equals your material length ie 12 ft the midpoint is the defleçtion ,the outermost curve of the arch create a line measure an offset of 1/6 2ft mark this point drape the chain so as the mid point crosses the offset and the two other points are on the line the scribed line of the fall off the chain one point on the line the midpoint intersect and the other end point on the line will scribe a catenary arch . This is the optimal arch. This is a drafting of the arch ,measures from this paper model are used to create a vertical form where the arch is pressed into and easily formed.

You can calculate the length of the arch, it is 2πR/6 - R is your distance from A to B

I'm currently trying to build one. Just tried my first bend with 1x2.75x10' hemlock and with a 16" bend in the center it started cracking. Just picked up some 2x4 to make a little pool to let my 1x2.75 soak and I'll give it another try. Also bought some 2x8 to make a 16"x10' platform to bend my arches. Hopefully will be all good when I have a chance to start bending in a few days!

Great job, you do such good work. I see you used cedar. Could I use 4" pine and not worry about it braking? I want to bend a 12' board. It is for the top of a 10'x20' shed

I do love the gothic arch and have watched several folks on how they did their arch. Most get into some serious mathematics so if that's not your thing but you want to try making an arched shed, greenhouse or whatever, please take a look at this man's method. It's what I used: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9yYa7F6upqZZYU.html
