How to Remove Carpet & Vinyl Adhesive the Easy Way

When I removed the flooring in my new shop I discovered that there has been vinyl down at some point in the past. Unfortunately, all the old floor adhesive remained and it had to come up. I used a product called Sentinal 626 to make the job a lot easier. Sentinal 626 is a vinyl and carpet adhesive remover. It has no odor and virtually no VOC concerns. It worked great removing the carpet and vinyl glue.

I just sent the manufacturer a message regarding how to determine if this product would work on specific adhesives and how to identify them. Almost 50% of buyers on Amazon complained about product. I can only assume they didn't use it properly or it does not work on certain adhesives.

Most older carpet and vinyl floor adhesives contain asbestos. Wet removal, the way you're doing, is the safest way to go.

Asbestos in flooring and flooring adhesives was discontinued in the early '60's, earlier in some parts. It's the adhesive with the crystalline additives that are dangerous. They used them from the '80's well into the '90's. Still, your point is valid: If you don't know who made the glue and what it is, it's safest to assume it is asbestos or something else that is dangerous.

Thanks for the great video. This product is the real deal. We rented an edco floor grinder that didn't work. Over the weekend, we tried some stuff from home depot that just turned it into tacky peanut butter. At my wits end, I watched this video again and then started making phone calls to track this down. We got a 5 gallon bucket from a local retailer. We let it set up for 2.5 hours and we were able to scrape through. Thanks again for the recommendation and great video, saved me today

Thank you so much, this is just what I needed. I'm making a mother-in-law suit out of a tiny add on hair salon that was built on to the fixer upper we recently bought. The floor suffered some water damage and in fixing it discovered the floor is at least 4 layers of vinyl tile over a couple decades years. The top vinyl tile that was under the carpet was covered in some kind of adhesive. I have tried everything. I really did not want to pull up four layers of vinyl to lay the new flooring. I really can't thank you enough. Excellent video, excellent!!!

The stuff works! Just bought a jug at Home Depot for $35.00. I bought the 747 plus formula to remove adhesive residue from sticky tiles. Tried everything and nothing worked as well as this stuff. Applied it and left it on for an hour, then removed it with a putty knife no problem. Slight odor but nothing bad at all, leaves a slightly greasy residue but cleans up with dish soap and water. Eco-friendly and can be cut with water to get more out of it.

Great video! I had a similar situation, except I had historic porcelain mosaic tiles buried under vinyl tile mastic and carpet adhesive. I bought a condo in what was previously a pre-war office building completed in 1910. At some point in its history, square linoleum tiles were glued over the porcelain tiles. When the building was converted to residential in the 80s, the developer simply pulled up the old vinyl floors and glued carpeting over everything. I was concerned because I had read that some of the vinyl tile mastic used in the mid-century contained asbestos. I found a product called Soy Gel which is a paint stripper made from soy beans. It is a thick gel substance that melted the mastic away and encapsulated the gunk. It worked amazingly well and I was able scrape everything up up and clean the floors with dish soap and warm water.

Hapaboy its the tile that has the asbestos for sure! Not sure about the adhesive! I would bet if not that some of the asbestos from the tile would definitely be embedded in the glue! Ive removed miles of that stuff and no probs so far at 65 yrs old! I always wear dust masks so that had to help some!

Save your money. You can use concentrated floor wax stripper and a little water or if you are really cheap you can use 25% ammonia, 70% water and 5 % dawn dish soap. Note- People will complain about the ammonia smell. Also note- If you cover the floor with 4 mil poly sheeting after you lay the chemical down , you can leave it overnight and the next day it will scape up like butter and wont evaporate. If the glue has crystalized, you may be better off just renting a scarifying machine with carbide tip scrapper blades. You can rent these at home depot or Sun Belt.
@mikegardner2376
@mikegardner2376 3 жыл бұрын
worked fairly well, a good rental store will have a floor polisher or floor sander with carbide cutters which can remove the glue. a good flooring sub will use these to remove glue before installing new carpet. they use way less glue on the clean floors.

Recent floor project I had the same problem. It was a concrete floor with adhesive that was rock hard from a wood laminate flooring. I tried a adhesive remover from Lowe's which did nothing. What I used was a plunge cut electric saw with a straight blade. It cut thru the adhesive quickly and effortless. Leveled the floor so I could install vinyl planks. The saw I used was from Harbor Freight not expensive.

Great job! You just got me to subscribe! Just curious about a couple of things. One:How much does a container of that product cost? You must've had to have bought quite a bit of it. Two: Not that it's important, but, judging from what I saw in the background, it looks like you were working in a Church. Anyway-Again, great job! After your applications in different areas, and even with different timings, you were still able to get the gunk off of the floor with what appeared to be comparative ease. Keep up the great work!
