Transferring Dirty PAL Video Tapes - It’s all Going to Sh*t

Bad storage contributes so many issues to replay of video tape. I have been transferring a clients 28 year old VHS tapes. Several are suffering from shedding the oxide and clogging the video heads which means stopping and cleaning with isopropyl alcohol very carefully and then having to assemble all the sections back together. Still at least it could be worse! I remember over 35 years ago running a quad tape with Sir David Frost about the miners strike - the oxide was shedding and clogging every ten seconds! What a job that was!

I have a Beta cassette that is full of home movies my grandmother took to Kodak 30 years ago and transferred from Super 8 onto cassette. The bulk of it is from the 1960s-1980s. It is the only copy in existence. I sent it to a photo transfer lab through Walmart and they returned it to me saying it was unviewable. I'm heartbroken but I can't bear to get rid of the tape.

Well first off you don’t hand any priceless home movies over to minimum wage outlets like Walmart who then outsource it over to low bid, min wage companies like Yesvideo who do their work. You’re very lucky to have received it back, so count your blessings there. More than likely nobody even put it in a player because the company that does the work for Walmart is terrible and again pays min wage unskilled labor that don’t care and probably tried to put it in a vhs player and thought hmmm and handed it back with an excuse. OR their beta player was so filthy and worn they couldn’t get a picture off it and blame your tape vs repair and maintain their equipment. This is the massive systemic problem across the industry, lack of equipment maintenance and low wage, low skill staff and a consumer base that thinks this type of service with 40 year old media can be transferred flawlessly for $25 a tape. You ONLY hand priceless memories to pros with insanely amazing reviews and a KZfaq channel and are charging actual, real world rates to do this all correctly. Consumer ignorance is keeping the shady businesses afloat and putting the excellent ones out of business.

So many endless and strange issues. Wow. The monochrome capture from a color output is really weird!

5:29 Usually when there is this type of damage on video 8 ir Hi-8, the audio is damaged too, because sound is recorded in mono or stereo hi-fi, and there is no linerar back up like on VHS. ( Some have PCM backup but i never had chance to use those ).

Audio that's on the tape is similar to FM broadcast, where you have mono(L+R),a pilot tone(To tell the machine tape contains stereo) and then multiplex is kinda like butterfly wings that pulse between Left & right so the machine can mathematically deduct from mono to recover the other channel and make up stereo audio that then goes out via RF,scart and composite. That's how the "Hi-Fi" sound works on the tape and depending on the condition of the tape or signal level of the audio will dictate whether VCR will fall back to mono(Mixed left & right) or remain stereo throughout the transfer process. However. digital 8 is completely PCM, it either works or it doesn't kinda similar to a digital radio that cuts in and out as you drive around town. ~Jason437.

I’ve been the family’s videographer forever and in high school carried around an 80lb vtr and pro camera for sports. Recently converted all my own 8mm video from the late 80s and early 90s. My very large Sony camera was showing lines and stutters, luckily found a canon in fb marketplace that had barely been used. There is an old saying that 1 is none, you always need spares. Great videos but I think you need to have to be a little ocd to run a business at this scale.

Thanks for sharing your story! 80lb VTR those were the days! Def have to be OCD in this biz! The google reviews reflect that!

Hi! May i ask how much is the shipping for digitizing my 8mm Video8 Tape? I live somewhere Southern Asia.
@gotmemoriesАй бұрын
Before that, need to understand what you have and the condition, shipping would be the least of the cost. Anything I get from S Asia, usually mold, sticky shed, nightmare.
