Күн бұрын

The Sabaton Song 'Gott Mit Uns' is about the Battle of Breitenfeld, fought between the Swedish under command of King Gustavus Adolphus and the Holy Roman Empire under Count Tilly. This battle was hugely influential in the Thirty Years War and the religious wars that were plaguing Europe in the 17th century.

After a few weeks of World Wars, we're going back to yet another big war. Gott Mit Uns is about the Battle of Breitenfeld where the Swedes and their allies fought the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Year war. We have done some non-modern episodes in the past, and while we thought that these would be harder due to the lack of modern photographs and film, they are really fun to make. We hope you like the result of our work! Drink enough water, cheers and Rock on!! 🤘🤘 If you would like to gain early access to our Sabaton History episodes and actively support this awesome project that we are so passionate about, you can do so by joining our Patreon community. @Knasterreal1 The Waffen-SS had in general no "Gott mit uns" on their buckles but "Unsere/Meine Ehre heißt Treue" (Our/My honor is loyality). Christianity was not really celebrated in the SS because of its original role as an elite force with inspiration and motivation taken mainly from paganism. However the regular Army in WW1 and WW2 wore buckles with the motto "Gott mit uns".

During their last Cleveland show, Joakim had the crowd choose between Poltava and Gott Mit Uns. We chose Gott Mit Uns. When he told us to cheer for either English or Swedish, the cheers for English were so quiet that he yelled "What the fuck!?" When he asked if we wanted Swedish, the whole crowd ROARED. The funny part was that nobody knew any of the lyrics except for "GOTT MIT UNS!"

When Pappenheim scouted outside of Leipzig and confronted Gustavus causing Tilly to march out of the easily defendable Leipzig where his troops happy with excessive plunder were to Breitenfeld he said something along the lines of "This man will be the death of me". And to be honest, Pappenheim did more damage to Tilly's reputation than Tilly could dream of, just look at Magdeburg.

A famous german Proverb is "alter schwede" which translates to "old swede " and discribes somthing outstanding or suprising and it comes from old swedish veterans who stayed in germany after the 30 year war. I tink its cool that after almost 500 years this battle still echos within the german language.

Nice to see more with a bit of differentiated than your last album. I heard Gott Mit Uns only once. Back in my first concert. Thobbe introduced this one and without Joakim. Damn. That is three years ago and still. What a fun concert that was. Got some great pics from you guys on Graspop. And when my place is cooling down and my room is no longer a sauna, I will be sure to send you guys a few pics. Waited ten hours for you guys at Graspop last Sunday. But damn me. You were worth it. See you at Wacken. And guys, please. I do hope White Death is on your setlist there. Or when you pass by again in Belgium. Either is good. And it is funny to see the concerts of Wacken. That's over a month. This is gonna be good.

I've always been kind of negative to the Swedish Empire Era or at least unapolagetic. While in school it was just hastily mentioned as the age when Sweden was a powerfull nation and blah blah blah. But when I did some research on the subject and got the numbers and facts the image changed considerably. By percentage we caused as more damage to Europes population as the Nazis and Soviets did combined during that era. The polish population namnes our invasion of Poland as the Swedish Deluge not as a war. This has taught me a very important lesson in history and certainly older history, always view it with an impartial and apolitical eye and sort out the pieces with as much objectvivty as you can. So many people shout today about glorious pasts and mighty ancestors but theu always seem to forget about the true facts about the horrors of war and the misery it causes. There are multiple eyewitnesses accounts from this periods which alows us to come really close to the people who lived in those days, a number of them is mentioned by the historian Dick Harrison in his book about the war ( link here I hope you understand swedish kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5mdkqeoqM6zmYk.html). That being said I really love the song and espacially the work you do Sabaton History!

When time goes by, it gets harder to see wars as the terrible things they were. Dressed in silly outfits with weir weapons, and without many accounts of the horrific individual experience, its easy to lose yourself in simple imagery and stories that were turned into a heroic national narrative in the 19th century or later. Too bad i can't read Swedish as I'd love to read that account. Thanks for the comment! - Joram

And the Estonians talk about Swedish rule as the golden years when things inproved. All great nations of europe did damage to each others populations, it's impossible to avoid when engaging in warfare. The later half of the Swedish imperial years I would say is something to be proud of, as the Swedes avoided warcrimes and atrocities as much as possible and punished raping soldiers with death. We sure as fuck were better than the english or russians.

Definitely interesting. Are you familiar with the 1632 series of novels by Eric Flint? It's an alternate history that occurs when an american coal mining town is mysteriously transported back in time to the middle of the thirty years war. The first book is simply entitled 1632, but there are many, many more written by Eric Flint with a whole host of coauthors.

About Pappenheim's cavalrymen. They weren't be a cuirassiers, they were a schwartze reiters and they're weren't intended for melee attacks. Their main tactic was a caracole, which consists in shooting enemy's ranks for long time.

I heard that during the Great War, the British would joke among themselves that because the German soldiers were wearing a belt with Gott mit Uns on its head - calling them 'Hun' ('uns) was a correct way
@SabatonHistory
@SabatonHistory 5 жыл бұрын
That contributed to the popularisation of it, but its use seems to originally lie in the Kaiser's 'Hun Speech' in 1900, where he addressed German troops who were departing to suppress the Boxer Rebellion in China: "Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their King Attila made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, may the name German be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German.”

I wish there was a specific song about the sack of Magdeburg - I've lived there for a few years and the scale of it is just insane - it was one of the most important cities in Germany before the sack with 35.000 inhabitants before the sack in 1931 - and with 20.000-25.000 being outright killed during the sack and a lot of buildings being destroyed people fled the city and even 8 years later the "city" only had 450 inhabitants. It's a small wonder that the city bounced back from that and is a state capital today
