So I'm sitting at my computer this morning up here in Canada and watching you play this amazing machine Joe. The art on it just blows me away. With the many, many, many machines I have played in my long life, I can safely say that this is one of the best looking machines IMHO. But with all the advanced tech and fancy sound you can get out of more recent machines, I just want to hear this one with an up to date music and sound effects. But that is what they had at the time to work with when this AMAZING machine was created. Each machine is a time capsule unto its time period. Thank Joe for keeping this mechanical,electric art form alive. people like me really do appreciate it and you.

The attention to detail is "amazing." I'm curious if all pinball machines used plywood. I assumed some at least were made with a heavy or stronger wood. Of course that would hurt the monetary bottomline for mass produced machines. I also wonder about how many units of this particular machine were made. I appreciate being educated about the splatter paint process with many of these games or machines. I haven't said it before but the store or business looks awesome, organized and very neatly kept up.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
They all pretty much used Plywood, some were particle board at some point and fell apart easily. The older ones, really old like 40's used real wood. There were 7,625 of these machines made, if you see one pick it up! We try to keep the shop as clean and organized as possible but it ain't easy!

The characters depicted on the playing field are Mary Jane Watson (Spider-Man's girlfriend), J. Jonah Jameson (publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper), Aunt May Parker (Spider-Mans aunt), and supervillains Kingpin, The Lizard, Kraven, The Scorpion and of course Spider-Man. On the back glass you have supervillains The Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and The Vulture as well as superhero The Black Widow. All the art was made original for the pinball and the artist is pinball art legend Gordon Morrison and drawn in the style of Ross Andru who was the Spider-Man artist for several years in the 70's. I have a friend who has the same machine and it's beautiful in person, and he was clever enough to take the backglass several years ago to Stan Lee and have it signed and according to Stan Lee it's the only back glass he signed.

So, there's something I'm a bit curious about - Having watched you repair/restore many a playfield, what, in your opinion, would be a recommended interval (in number of plays) for routine maintenance of an older pinball machine (clean/wax the playfield, replace the rubbers, and/or the ball, etc)? Obviously, an individual owner, in a home environment, will have lighter usage than a more public setting, but preventative maintenance, is preventative maintenance... I'm not looking for a 'hard number', so much as the town in which the ballpark is located...

@LyonsArcade

You can kind of do it by eye, if you start noticing any dirt on the playfield (you'll see it in the inlanes first) time to clean it up, the rubber rings maybe once every two years or so unless you see them deteriorating before that.... they'll get dirty but you can actually clean the dirt off of them pretty good with wax. Maybe Wax it every 6 months or so.... If you're playing the hell out of it every night maybe every month or so. On location typically we'd wipe the playfield down every week....

The first Spider-Man was drawn by Steve Ditko - of course! - EXCEPT for the cover. The cover was drawn by Jack Kirby and the Back Glass is reflective of the Kirby cover. Spidey is bulked-up by Kirby. The Ditko S-M is a much leaner character. Ditko know better...
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I didn't know that. I have seen the bulked up one and the leaner one, now that you mention it... In the 90's I used to read a lot of the Batman/Superman books and each had a different artist, there was this one guy who I'm sure you know who I'm talking about, drew them ridiculously oversized and veiny and stuff. I loved all of it, didn't bother me.

I wasn't very found of the sound board on these. Just like the Panthera, you kind of wonder if it's wrong or what. @@LyonsArcade He isn't making a personal attack against you or your work. He's just saying "this is what I didn't like about this particular machine." (Gottlieb's Spider-Man in general, not this Spider-Man in specific.) It's called an "opinion", and everyone has them. I'm sure he apologizes for thinking you might actually be interested in *his* opinion. Here's a suggestion: Try to remember that YOU are not the only person who reads the comments. KZfaq is not your personal bulletin board, it's open to the public. YOU might not be interested in Tonero's opinion, but someone else might. I normally would not have commented about this, but it feels to me like you took his comment a little personally, as if he was slamming your hard work, but he isn't. Please try to keep in mind that the people who watch your videos and post in the comments are fellow arcade & pinball enthusiasts, and sometimes share their interests in the comments. What is his interest? He'd like a Gottlieb Counterforce machine (which came out the same year as their Spider-Man machine.) He also wishes Gottlieb had used a better sound board in Spider-Man. In *no way* is that an attack on you or your work, so your complaint about his "laundry list" feels unwarranted. Speaking of your work... nicely done! I remember dropping quite a few quarters into Spider-Man back in the day in one of the two local bowling alleys. Or was it one of the two roller skating rinks? I know it wasn't one of our three theaters or four arcades. :laugh: It's been 40 years, I'm entitled to forget a few things. Whoever buys this machine is gonna be proud of it. It looks nearly mint! (Or whoever *bought* this machine; I know you record these videos several weeks before you put them online, so it's probably already sold.)

You mean like one on one side, and two on the other? They've done that on many games, in general though the standard just two flipper layout was pretty much the best, but depending on the playfield they like to switch it up and make things a little different on some of them.
