James Gurney paints a man in a diner, but he has to get the sketch done fast before the man leaves. His plein-air / urban sketching technique starts right out with a brush, followed by big washes of watercolor and finally opaque gouache accents.

I have a real problem, that is, the more I watch you paint the less I feel able to do it. In your gestures there is both simplicity and complexity. It's always beautiful to watch, even from thousands of miles away (France-Périgord)and in front of a screen, but it erases the immense talent that you have. I have a deep respect for what you do, but also for you. Thank you Mr Gurney

Great, James! I think many of us may think the pencil is "safer" to start with to help in defining shapes and areas, including me. But I see what your saying. Going to have to bolden up and try using the brush first for a faster approach. Thanks!

Beautiful demo. I’ve come to love drawing directly with a brush because I feel like I think more sculpturally (of that makes sense) than when I pencil it first. If I use a pencil I tend to “color it in” more than think about the planes more simply.

I've been watching and learning from James for years and what is most amazing to me is his economy of stroke. Most people busy their paintings up with line-work and corrections. Not James! Pure execution of the essentials, nothing more.

I can’t wait to be good enough to do something like this. Not just with speed & efficiency, but esp. w/the ability to choose just the right colors. Beautiful work. Thank you so much for including that you can paint amazing pictures with inexpensive supplies. I got tired of channels where they review and recommend products that are super ridiculously expensive. It’s not the ‘stuff’ that makes you a better painter/artist.
