Thanks for sharing and success in breeding your precious birds. They are my favorite finches. I've been raising them for over 10 years and still enjoy caring for these birds.

Hi Chris, me again. My birds are now molting, so I have removed the 2 nest boxes. I presume I will need to completely clean out the boxes of feathers, etc. so they can start fresh in the spring. Is that right?

Okay, I’m confused. How can you tell if a Di-loot is a male and a yellow is a female? I’m new to breeding gouldians and would love to understand how this colouring system works. Thanks
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 4 жыл бұрын
Gouldian genetics can be complex. You can have both male and female yellows but only a male dilute which is basically saying that the male is split to yellow.

you dont use fostering, right. What is the secret of your success. Do you give them live food.
@birdnerd

No I do t give them live food. It I do give them egg food 2 times a day while they are breeding and I try to give them as much privacy as I can.

What sort of lighting do you use as well on your indoor aviaries? I’ve only had luck with my gouldians breeding outside in my huge aviary. I also had a young gouldian that I believe his parents tossed out of the nest box. Can I hand raise one? It has a strong will to live.

Hi, I just got myself Gouldians for the first time ever. I wanted to know how many times a year will they breed and lay eggs? Or rather how often in a year should I let them breed to be in the best of health.
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 5 жыл бұрын
if you have a bonded pair they may try to breed several times in the year. I try to only let mine breed 2 times each year.

I just discovered your videos. They are fantastic. I have about 50 gouldians and I am learning many new things. Question, Are yellows always female?
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 5 жыл бұрын
Warren, the answer is no. Gouldian genetics can get complicated If you have a single factor yellow (dilutes, then you can get female yellows and typically male dilutes) If you have 2 yellows together you males and females will come out yellow. as well. There is more specifics that go into it but thats the majority of yellow genetics. Also there is a web site called gouldian genetics calculator. you fill in the colors of your gouldian pair and it will calculate what you should expect from that pair.

But I have a clarification. as I told before the red headed pair is doing great. I too started to provide egg food. initially they were hesitant, but now they are acclimatized to seeing the food and have started to have those as well apart from the soft foods. now that I got my yellow headed pair, is it wise to place them along with the red headed in one single cage?
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 6 жыл бұрын
That depends on how big your cage is George Ray. First I would quarantine the birds in a separate cage away from all of your other birds for a few weeks just to make sure they are healthy and wont bring in any outside diseases to your current bird flock. If it is a smaller cage then I wouldn't advise putting the pairs together. If your cage is sufficiently large then you could probably put them together and just keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't fight with each other. I have bred Gouldians in a colony setting with success but you have to make sure that the birds have enough space so they don't fight.
@georgeray649
@georgeray649 6 жыл бұрын
I thank you for the advice. I have an extra big cage and would set the yellow headed in it and would watch how they are doing for about 3-4 weeks. and then decide whether to group them together in one cage.

Are you from US or Canada? Coz here in Canada I talked to some of the breeders and their breeding cycle is around June to Septmber and it seems that your cycle is different. I'm asking this question coz I'm a newbie and my pair bred this month but all the eggs are infertile.
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 6 жыл бұрын
ErwinWabe, I am in the US, but Gouldians can be trained to breed at different times of the year. I have trained mine to breed during the winter months because I breed indoors where i can control the surrounding heat. Im sure that most of the breeders that breed in the summer months is because they either breed outdoors or they don't provide enough heat during the winter for the Gouldians to breed successfully. There could be a number of reasons why your finches eggs weren't fertile. How long have you had the pair for? What is their current diet? What does their cage setup look like? Many times one of the birds isn't quite ready to breed which could be a reason why the eggs aren't fertile.
@ErwinWabe
@ErwinWabe 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. How do you train them when if their breeding condition is dependent on their beaks color and behaviour, how do you influence their behaviour is by food? Thanks in advance.
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 6 жыл бұрын
For Gouldians the best way to get them to breed when you want is based a lot on their diet, temperature, and their yearly molt. There are some great books and articles on the internet that talk about gouldian diets and how to prepare them for breeding. Here are a couple of websites that hopefully will help you out ladygouldianfinch.com/features_seasons.php ladygouldianfinch.com/features_breeding1.php www.fabulousfinch.com/breeding-gouldian-finches.htm Hopefully you can get some valuable information from some of these websites.

Nice to see you doing more videos. :) do you keep the babies together despite the sex? or do you separate males and females?
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 6 жыл бұрын
I keep the babies together for the first couple of months until I can see which ones are females and males and then i will put them into separate flights of the same gender. Right now they are too young to try and breed or to start chasing females so they get along very well together

Just curious about the containers with the holes cut out the top. What are these used for.
@birdnerd
@birdnerd 6 жыл бұрын
G N, those are my seed containers, they have lids on them with holes on top so the finches can stick their heads in the holes to eat, but it helps to keep the birds from spilling the seed out and keep their cages a little cleaner.

@birdnerd

Typically both males and female will take turns incubating the eggs. The female will usually incubate overnight with the male in the nest box with her or he will sit outside the nest.
