Used by many nibmeisters, Micro-Mesh is an incredibly fine abrasive paper that will help to smooth out the tip of a scratchy fountain pen nib. This 6"x3" sheet of 12,000 grit Micro-Mesh will be enough to last you years, and will help you save those nibs that made you want to throw your pens away! Here's how to use it.
***Disclaimer*** Doing any kind of nib modification such as smoothing with Micro-Mesh will void just about all pen manufacturer's warranties. You are responsible for any work you do to your own pen.

I used this video to aid me in smoothing out some Heros 616 and the change is drastic. They went from mediocre pens to excellent writers. Thanks for the tutorial.

Great video! Platinum Preppys are great cheap pens to practice with especially since they have them with fine and medium nibs. Don't do too many figure 8's! You don't want to create flat spots on the nib!

Micro-Mesh is a pretty fine honing tool, meant pretty much just for smoothing. You can use coarser abrasives, if you want to actually reshape your nib. A huge warning goes along with that though, the coarser you go, the easier it is to overdo it and ruin your nib. Dip nibs are generally pretty inexpensive so the risk is lower, but fountain pen nibs can get pricey for this kind of experimentation.

These videos (The brass sheet / the micro-mesh / the mylar paper) are SUPER HELPFUL. Thank you, Brian! Your demos + explanations making everything so much user-friendly (Especially if you don't have enough experience in those things... yet 😊)

Technically, it's possible. But you'd probably be sanding for weeks to take it that far. Micro-Mesh is essentially a polishing tool, not a grinding tool. You're looking at getting into full-on nibmeistering at this point, and you're pretty much guaranteeing ruining dozens or hundreds of nibs before you'd be able to regrind a nib properly. Leave this to the pros.

Another great video! Though Mylar Paper and Micro-Mesh are far more alike than they are different, I think it was very wise to make a video about one and another video on the other. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that such concise videos work very well with my limited attention span! 😂 I look forward to many more videos! 👍👍 Be well. ✌

I bought a dozen Jinhao nibs - Jinhao nibs (and pens) are great for learning this skill - and have been practicing - and succeeding and failing, predictably; so thankfully, this tutorial is really helpful! My nicer nibs... I can get tuned for $25 bucks, so why risk it - for now, at least. I really am enjoying learning pen fine-tuning and nib work, largely thanks to y'all; your videos and products. I'm always so grateful for your clear instructions, Brian! 🙏🏻

I've got some fairly cheap dip pen nibs that weren't playing well and I had been messing with something much more abrasive that wasn't really smoothing for me. I got this and it did wonders. Took a few tries to finally smooth it out right but that's probably only because of the use of the higher abrasive.

This is a “horror story” that turned out well. I had an inexpensive pen that wrote scratchy. I purchased a duplicate pen which works well, so I did have a pen that works. But I got curious and decided that I would use the scratchy pen for experimenting with micromesh. I watched the video and got the basic idea, and then I set the video aside for a few days before I summoned up the courage to try the micromesh. I finally took out the micromesh. I made the figure-8s, and the problem kept getting worse! The pen had been a little bit scratchy, and now it scratched like anything! So, just out of curiosity, I tried using the Mylar paper, and the scratchiness seemed to correct itself! What could have been the problem with the micromesh? I went back to the video. I had used the *wrong side* of the micromesh - the backside, with the white threads! The threads form a kind of mesh pattern, so I figured - well, that must be the micromesh. That I had not rendered that nib permanently unusable is a stroke of luck. I turned over the micromesh and made my figure 8s on the correct side. Now I have a Diplomat Magnum with extra-fine nib that writes beautifully. My face is red (!), but I live and I learn. Even with this mistake, I feel very pleased. I have learned a new skill that I can apply to future pens that I might purchase. Let’s see how that goes! And I thank you for your help.

Interesting. I wouldn’t have thought that the opposite-side of the Micro-Mesh would have ANY effect, either positive or negative. I guess it does make sense though as you describe a different type of grit or mesh being on that side. If that’s not a uniformly distributed mesh, I could definitely see it as a potentially HUGE problem! I’m actually surprised it didn’t do more damage as Brian was saying that the correct-side is 3-microns, and Mylar Paper goes far smaller than that (up to ~10x smaller)! So, yes, you’re very lucky you didn’t destroy a nib, whew! 😅 I also have a Diplomat Magnum, though mine has a Broad nib, which is most appropriate to use with wet, sheening inks. I’ve been using a few sheening inks, but my favorite right now is KWZ’s Sheen Machine (I’m using the original, though their #2 is very nice too). Smaller nibs don’t tend to bring out the sheen as you really need certain qualities such as the wetness, having enough surface area on the nib itself, and using a good quality paper that won’t feather the ink or anything like that. My point regarding the above paragraph is that I am considering another Magnum, but either in Fine or Extra Fine, as I tend to write on the smaller side. I found that going a “size up” for fountain pens used for note taking flow better this way. By going a size up, you’ll allow more ink to flow, less false starts, etc. So, I’m wondering if that factored into your problem at all. Diplomat tends to make very good products, which is why I was wondering if this was a simply anomaly or something else altogether. Be well. ✌

Jay Rose, I just stumbled into the Diplomat Magnums rather blindly. I tried them, and I liked them, especially because I am a marathon writer and the pens are light to hold. I am happy with both the fine and the extra fine. The extra fine puts down a line that is very fine, perhaps as fine as the Pilot Metropolitan fine, which, like most all the Japanese brands, puts down a line finer than the one put down by the German brands. I would say that the only line I have seen that is finer than the one put out by the Diplomat Magnum EF is the one put out by the Pilot EF.

@@barbarajloriordan2697 Many thanks! I may just try it as when I write notes, it could be for hours. I am primarily using a Sailor Compass right now and I personally love the thing! I’m using it with Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo ink at the moment. I wrote a pretty extensive comment about the Sailor Compass on the Goulet Blog just a few days ago, but just now noticed that it was “Detected as Spam.” So, I just flagged it for review as “not spam.” I was going to share the link as I can’t say enough about such an affordable Sailor! The last pen I was this happy with was the Pilot Explorer with a Fine nib. I did find the nib most comparable to a Pilot Metropolitan, but the feel of the pen is entirely different to me. The Pilot Explorer just feels more comfortable and streamlined, especially for long use! BTW, I only tried the Broad nib on my Diplomat Magnum for the same reason that I tried a 1.1 Stub nib on my Monteverde Ritma - it was the fountain pen included in a monthly subscription box - I found it ideal to force me to try products that I would never otherwise order on my own! It’s good because I’ve learned a lot as a result of this, such as why sheening inks work ideally with Broad nibs. Prior to that I had no clue why my Extra Fine or Fine nibs wouldn’t put out a good sheen, if any at all! You’re also spot on as “Eastern nibs” do tend to run smaller than “Western nibs.” German nibs are the odd one out, IMHO, as they’re great, but each company has aspects specific all to themselves. I like Kaweco and LAMY for writing, but even though I own at least a half-dozen LAMY fountain pens, my lone Kaweco is currently one of my primary pens that I use. I generally keep the LAMYs organized by color, so if I need a red pen, I could quickly grab one. You get the idea. My next fountain pen will surely be the Goulet USA exclusive Prismatc Purple Diplomat Magnum, probably in Fine, for the thoughts stated earlier and I’ve just had better luck with Fine nibs recently. I made an order Friday and wanted to get one, but forgot to include it in my order. I did get a second Sailor Compass though! If you haven’t tried the Pilot Explorer, I’d urge you to give it a shot. It’s on the less expensive end, so not much to lose at all! If you’re interested in looking at the monthly subscription box that I’m subscribed to, just Google “Inkredible Box” and it should be the very first ‘organic’ hit. I get the $30/month box, this way I get a full-size bottle of ink with every order and have not been disappointed yet. Just sharing in case you wanted to see what I’m talking about. Be well. ✌

This is great for the cheaper disposable pens like the pilot varsity which are straight steel and don't have the hardened tipping. And it only takes a couple of strokes on the mesh sheet to get it quite smooth. Would you ever recommend this for stub nibs as the shape is quite different? They tend to get scratchy if your angle is off some I'm wondering if this could help

Do you think this would work to smooth out the reverse writing on a pen if the ink flow is already fine (it writes in reverse completely fine, except the uppers are pretty scratchy).

In using a inked pen to smooth the nib, acting as lubricant as you've mentioned, would writing on the same spot on the micromesh over and over (circles, figure-eights, etc.) eventually cover the micromesh/abrasive itself to the point that it doesn't smooth the nib anymore? Thank you so much for posting so many helpful and informative videos :D

Do you think that this would work on the Rohrer & Klingner glass dip pen? I bought one a while ago but the tip is too long to let the ink flow smoothly from the flutes.
@Gouletpens

The idea is the same, but with stubs you have to really make sure not to rotate the pen in your hand as you smooth the nib. It's easy to round off the corners of an italic or stub if you're not careful. Doing that would make it write smoother, but it would also cut down on some of the line variation as well.

i think if you have a golden Nib, using the Micro-mesh wouldn't be a very good idea, since gold is a softer metal and it might wear out more than what is expected. Am i right ? also if it's an italic or oblique Nib, wouldn't that change the shape of the Nib ?
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 7 жыл бұрын
You just have to be very careful because you're right, it will impact the metal much more than it would a steel nib. With it voiding any warranty, we suggest only the most experienced nib tuners do it. But overall, if you're light with the touch and not doing it often, it shouldn't alter the nib that drastically. - Colin

The Goulet Pen Company this raises a question. In many videos it is said that the writing surface is neither gold nor steel. It is 'iridium' which is quite strong. So how does nib smoothing affect gold nibs more than steel nibs while we are only working on the iridium? Keep up the videos :)
