Tenor Yosep Kang sings the air from Cinq-Mars "A vous ma mère", from act IV of Cinq-Mars by Charles Gounod, with the Orchestre National de France conducted by Jesko Sirvend, also performing the entracte symphony from the same opera.
Named head of the Opéra-Comique, Léon Carvalho had overseen (whilst at the Théâtre-Lyrique) the creation of five major works by Gounod. During this time, he continuously asked the composer to adapt the novel by Alfred de Vigny; the opera hosue received over 10000 requests to attend the premiere, on 5 April 1877, so great was the public demand. Handling a subject worthy of a Grand Opéra without falling into the stereotypical clichés, Gounod composed an intimate work, elegant and powerful. In the prison where he awaits his execution for having conspired against Richelieu, the Marquis of Cinq-Mars relives in a dream (in the form of an orchestral prelude) his love with Marie de Gonzague, who betrayed their union by accepting a political marriage. He then brings to mind his beloved, whom the audience knows pretended to consent in order to save Cinq-Mars. Hence the air's desired ambiguity of a Bellini-esque sensitivity, full of tenderness rather than wild bitterness.
