The same thing happened on I- 40 at 8:am , may26,2002, in Webber’s Falls, Ok. It took 65 days to replace almost 600ft. Several cars and 18 wheelers drove off into the Arkansas river. That was a tragedy.

As an individual who has spent nearly 17 years in search and rescue and been a lifelong Maryland resident I can personally attest to the very difficult, very treacherous conditions our first responders are facing. Not just in now looking for the bodies of the deceased but the water conditions, very cold, and also visibility in the water isn't great, plus several thousand tons of mangled bridge in and underwater, let's all hope they find them and pray we don't lose any first responders in the process! #MarylandStrong

If you look at it, it looks like they were speeding across very, very fast, like they knew what was about to happen like someone was yelling to them or on a bullhorn move move. They were moving very, very fast. I think the people crossed the end just as it happened

Yep. Filling potholes. Not uncommon. The police were about to stop traffic from both sides. At 130am, not a lot of traffic going by. The police weren’t able to contact to crew or foreman to get them off the bridge. It all happened in minutes.

They were filling potholes on a night crew. The bridge attendants were able to cut off any entering traffic from the bridge just in time because the ship contacted them to say they were going to hit. It was only 90 seconds from the mayday call to the collision.

I’ve driven on that bridge countless times! I send my deepest and most sincere condolences to families who’ve lost loved ones & all affected!! Commuters who have to reroute and sit in traffic on alternate routes are included! As the Governor said, “We are #Baltimore Strong!” This too shall pass! Peace love and unity! ❤

I hope they’re using ferries to help people commute & buses on each side to get people where they need to go. Can a temporary port be setup on the seaside of the bridge so vessels can offload?

i've said this in another comment on here already, BUT: -the port itself has a current. likely, once the ship had lost power a second time, it began to veer in that direction due to the current of the water. since the patapsco river flows into the Chesapeake bay, which is directly connected to the atlantic ocean and so forth.

You need to take into account that everything has a weak point. Do you have any idea how heavy those cargo ships are? I doubt anything will be able to stop it without it being severely damaged.

The ship weighed upwards of 200 hundred million tons. There are plenty of engineers and physicists who could and have explained this. Look it up.

Do you know how heavy a cargo ship is? At least 100,000 TONS. 2000 lbs is 1 ton. That thing weighed 220 million pounds or more. The bridge is an older design with two supports...the ship decimated one. Sheer weight and force. There's no way it would survive the impact.

If you're not adept to the situation, and weren't there, and you know you're "probably " wrong then whats the point of saying anything at all? Lol. They barely even had the time to stop traffic. Its very unfortunate that this happened, but it did. At least they were able to stop traffic at all and save those lives, or even more would have been taken.

You ask such a dumb question. You know we have foreign made cars here right? As well as electronics, imported foods, clothes. Many parts for airplanes, material for skyscrapers and other buildings, commercial farm equipment, etc are manufactured in various countries. We get these parts via import. We need a company with such vessels to carry and bring these products. The Singaporean company that manned this vessel is one of hundreds globally that deal in international logistics and importing of goods to many countries. This vessel was supposed to be headed to Sri Lanka after leaving the US for another drop off. You think it was just some random Singaporean boat that decided to run into a bridge in Baltimore?...

God bless those families. And I still haven't heard anything from the captain and/or crew as to why they did not drop anchor as soon as they started experiencing a power fall-off. Also, Biden needs to be taken to task as to why he is hoisting the bill on the American tax-payers when this is the fault of a foreign shipping company putting an under-maintained ship with an under-trained crew on the ocean.

Is it to early? If you watch the video, you can clearly see it loses power (ie no steering), if flickers back up but it was too late. With a Baltimore pilot on board, there’s no way that was intentional.

If it was intentional, why would they even try and save lives? They people on the ship could have said nothing at all. The police could have did nothing at all. But they all took everything very seriously and did everything they could to help as many people as possible.

@@iriskoomi2857 In fact anyone that knows anything about freighters knows there HAD to have been a certified port authority harbor pilot onboard in coming of the ship. The local news reported that he radioed the port authority that the ship had lost power and he did not have the ability to steer or reverse in time before passage under the bridge. The police had enough time to block traffic in one direction. It soon became apparent they were not going to transit under the bridge but drift into one of the pilings.
