Have you tried to setup govee lights with a wall switch like NSPanel? I've been trying to figure out how to do it without powering on/off the Govee controller

Thank you! I was initially frustrated because my Govee patio lights weren't supported by the regular Govee integration. Didn't realize I had to install the custom integration. Working beautifully now.

Thank you for helping me get this setup with home assistant! Pumped to have been able to snag a cheap set of govee color LED strips 2x 16ft for $20. Cheapest LED per ft that includes a wifi/bt controller. I like my BTF COB strips but these govees are a decent stand in for the Christmas lights I packed away and apparently lost

Thanks Ryan! I appreciate you clearing up the confusion surrounding the multiple Govee integrations in Home Assistant. I've got several of the strips currently running with the Govee LAN integration. I was always disappointed that I couldn't access any presets or scenes but it looks like I need to set up the Google Assistant SDK and can then enjoy that functionality. 👍 I'd definitely be interested in you sharing a tutorial on creating DIY as well!

Hey, you are welcome! I was searching high and low for a way to trigger effects. I really hope Govee adds more control in their API. I need to spend some more time with their app, I have no idea how some folks create the effects they do.

I watched your video before the holidays and it was super helpful as I had just gotten a bunch of Govee lights for the season. Similar to your point about activating scenes via Google Assistant I found I can do the same via Amazon Alexa by sending the "Activate ____" command via Custom Component - Amazon Media Player. I see now in 2024.2 that there is a native Govee LAN control option and I'm wondering how it compares to any of the other options you identified, or this new MQTT option I see in the comments.

Thank you so much for the video. I was looking at Govee lights, since they're cheaper than what I've been buying with Philips. Was looking to see how much work would be involved compared to integrating, since I like how simple it is for Philips. Think I'll keep with Philips for now, but love those window screen lights. That's awesome! Great video and very informative!

The Phillips are quite a bit more expensive. But most of them are signed based, so a lot more flexible. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@ThisSmartHouse The expensive part was why I was looking at Govee. My main job is fairly intense, so I don't like having to do a ton of configuring for this fun side exploration. I still need to set a static IP at some point for my Home Assistant Green. Maybe when I finish doing that, and actually setup HACS, I'll look at Govee more. Philips simplicity so far has worked. Those curtain lights though, and the hexagon ones look amazing. Keep up the awesome videos.

If you want to, you can create a helper button in HA, expose it to Alexa, and setup a routine in Alexa to control your govee lights. Alexa has access to any snapshots, scenes, etc that you have saved in the govee app. Now HA can turn on my christmas snapshot around the holidays, and my white down light simulation the rest of the year.

Thanks for a great informative video!!! As all your videos are! I know we're talking about govee lights, but do you have any goveelife appliances? If so, do you know of any way to integrate them into HAS other than using the device ID from govee and the "rest command" in a script? Like you use google, I import scenes from govee into alexa routines, then use "alexa media player" for HAS to write automations. That's great, but I still want to be able to see the state of my govee appliace (heater) in my HAS dashboard, when my wife asks me, on the road, if I turned the heater off! Guess I'm just old and lazy.

I was able to connect using method 2 and ESPHome with an ESP32 device as a bluetooth proxy. I first tried to connect directly to home assistant, but it didn't find the lights. I added a bluetooth proxy and it worked immediately. I've not used the light in any scenes yet, but I haven't been able to change colors using the UI control for the entity.

This is an awesome video. I’m so confused though - all I want to do is set my Govee M1 light strip to the “Game” theme when I activate my “workout” scene. But in Home app scene builder all I see is the ability to turn the Govee lights different colors. No third party apps wanted here, just Home and Govee. Am I missing this somewhere?

Great video, couple things I didn't know about. I currently only use the seconded Govee HACS intigration you were showing. Works great minus that polling rate can be fun to figure out. Wish they would increase that

I am shocked that I am getting a max calls on the local API. I have to do some digging, but when I added a few more devices I now get errors in the morning.

@@ThisSmartHouse Hope you have some luck, I've tried so many things with no luck. I will say haven't your polling rate at the right number makes a big difference. I switched to the one your using and it's been much better. I currently only have 9 Govee devices.

Do you hsve any idea why the Govee Integration does not see Govee DreamView T1 TV Backlight ? ]When clicking it only shows "Close" and thats it, nothing to choose from, obviously i dont have 50 lights like you but the one should be showing shoulnt it ?

I would stick with Z-wave for “critical” lights. My main recommendation to folks is to use a smart switch and dumb lights. Unless you REALLY want RGB.

This is a great video and very informative. However, the Govee Cloud API has a major limitation if you have a lot of lights, as it is limited to a maximum number of calls per minute, so while Option 3 does work, it is barely usable for me with 23 lights. I've tried changing the polling interval (all the way up to 300) but it still isn't effective. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

0:01 I had the same problem with the "govee" HACS integration. I have 25 govee light products and they would constantly disconnect no matter what I set the polling number to. Installed the "Govee Lights" (LAN) and all my problems went away. This was a long time ago, so they probably have LAN control for a lot of their lights now.

I like Home Assistant and the Govee Lights looking cool but is it possible to use als the products without the cloud? I like my Zigbee lights because I can use all of them without any cloud to some other company.

Right now the local control is very limited on Govee. There are only a few RGBIC light vendors that have local control. The Aqara T1 is a zigbee RGBIC strip you can control locally. I am still trying to figure out how to set up light presets in HA with a Zigbee LED strip.

The Bluetooth proxy function? I don't think so with option 2. I am not sure if that integration supports the proxy. I tried it with the one in my office and it didn't work.

If you poke around the integration GitHub they have some tips. Like toggling wifi.

Set up the LAN control in your instance and it will find your govee lights. At least, that worked for me a long time ago. It may be that some lights have LAN control on by default. Only a few of my govee products have a switch for LAN control. Months ago, I tried everything suggested to get LAN controls to show up with no results, but all my lights connected! Even Govee has suggestions for this problem with the app.

Not all Govee lights seem to support LAN control. I enabled it on a floor lamp successfully, but the B22 bulbs that I bought don't seem to support it at all. The option doesn't appear in the app, and attempting to change the attribute using Home Assistant has no effect. The resulting limitation makes them near useless in a smart home, particularly if you have multiple of them

Google assistant sdk slightly defeats the purpose of local control . You are actually correct presets are easy to implement by manufacturer if govee does that they can have my money. One point to mention though although local control option is available lot of manufacturers have revoked Lan control (namely Xiaomi) in their apps citing security as the reason (god knows why )

I always prefer local control but some control is better than none. I have heard you can replace the controllers on a lot of govee lights with WLED.

My main problem with govee (and many other peoples problem) is that loose wifi connection for no reason. Love the price but hate rhat they are so unstable.

I have issues with the Wi-Fi as well. But just on the lights that are the farthest outside.

i dont see hacs, i think its because i have HA on a docker container my UI is very limited. time to look for the command line way to install it

That's one of the disadvantages of running a non-supervisor version of home assistant. I believe there is a way to manually install it though, you might want to check the documentation. I also saw a few posts about installing HACS in docker.

Yeah, it is disappointing. Make sure you let Govee know you want more control via the the local API. I am finding that HA is limited on its ability to directly control RGBIC LEDS and effects.

And according to Rob over at @TheHookup, most of the Govee lights (strips and outdoor lights) can be driven via WLED. Not sure if any of the others can as well.

Note as of this writing, @wez has shifted dev focus from Govee LAN Control to the Govee2MQTT Add-on. Ryan is it possible for you to publish a walk-through update on how to add this MQTT add-on integration? Some key advantages as far as I can tell, is the MQTT integration now supports per device modes and scenes, along with lower latency and more robust local control, etc. Many thanks!

WOW! Thank you for the heads up on this. I have converted over my main HA instance to use the MQTT add-on, and it is POWERFUL! I have a completed and mostly edited video about tying sports scores to Govee lights. I think I will still post it but this COMPLETELY changes the options. I can actually run my DIYs from right in Home Assistant. I will definitely get planning on a video ASAP for this. I need to work out a few things that don't seem to work, but once that is done, I will get another video out. THANK YOU AGAIN! I will make sure to give you a shout-out in the video for pointing me in the right direction!

I am using the Govee2MQTT integration now and it give a lot more features. I will probably do video on it in the near future.

@@ThisSmartHouse ok thanks! I used the built in govee integration and it appears to "work" but it's not perfect and doesn't respond to entire groups sometimes. Like, 5 out of 7 will turn on or off but not all. Interested to see if MQTT would be a better route.
