My GR86 has a build date of 11-23. Likely one of the last of the 2023’s. I learned of this problem after the purchase. This vehicle is street driven and is never going to be raced. Nevertheless, I admit to some spirited driving on some of the winding back roads of Western Pennsylvania. I changed the oil at 1023 miles and opened the used filter. Of course the oil was yet very clean and I found no evidence of any RTV ( or anything else) caught in the filter element. I am somewhat relieved and I’m hoping that Subaru has finally resolved this issue. I am going to service it again at around 3500 miles and inspect that filter as well. If I find anything suspicious at that time I will post it here.

This is so disappointing. I was set on buying one of these one year ago but my mind has totally changed. It's not that I think the car will necessarily blow up, but the poor design and worksmanship has just left a mark on me.

Are the 2024 going to have the same issues with RTV? You’d think Subaru would have fixed this issue by now.

The latest update I have is that for NEW 2023's on the break in oil change, we are seeing large amounts of RTV being drained out with the engine oil, but much less stuck in the oil strainer.

@@CMAutohaus thanks still not very promising. Strange, Subaru didn’t have this issue before…

@@TheBilliardCorner They've had this issue since MY2011 with the (new at the time) FB engines. I think we are only aware of the issue now due to the other weakness' being revealed with the FA24 in the GR86.

I order Subaru filter from Japan. My 86 was built May 2023. I need to drop the pan. It has 1200 miles and Ive changed the oil twice and going to change it today to Motul 8100 power 0 w20 and Japanese OEM filter

If you plan to drive the car hard, I still recommend the SYMS baffle - only baffle on the market proven to work.

Really, they couldn’t change production methods 2 years ago when this became an issue? Just keep pumping the RTV on the pan, who cares, right? Since when is Toyota thinking like that? I’d rather risk a Macan than this.

I'm in the market for the 22/23 GR86/BRZ, I plan on daily driving it. I also wanted to track it like once or twice every couple of months. I was wondering if I was to remove the oil pan and take out the loose RTV and then install a baffle plate, would I be okay driving it without having to worry about it blowing up on me? I'm also thinking about installing a oil cooler as well.

Is that a new internal design pick up, with that hole on the left? Before it was with just a filter mesh , wasn’t it?
@CMAutohaus

Same pick up design. It is a 5 sided mesh

Was this a first oil change? I would think it isn’t as I see it has the Toyota 90915-YZZS1 filter superseding the Subaru xxxx170 that is installed at factory.

I used Honda oil filters on my previous 2017 brz. It fits and worked fine for daily street driving. Has the first gen had any RTV in the pickup? I'm considering getting another first generation.

So on the 2024 has the issue been solved?
@erniejoel1234

2024 owner here. 6 track days hard street driving and 20,000 miles not a single problem with the engine. This is a internet issue were people want to make a problem where there is none. If you drop the oil pan you void your warranty. If and that is a big IF it blows and the car is stock the warranty will take care of it. There is no proof that RTV is causing problems in this engine.

Wouldn’t the little piece of aluminum get stuck in the oil filter, if it got through the pickup screen?

Its possible for containants to get trapped inside internal engine oil passages and filters (OCV filters in the cam carriers)

People - this is not a 86 specific issue. Only from the factory is this 86 specific. If you're buying a used car, you should consider the possibility that someone did something and used excessive RTV. We basically don't look at the oil systems of cars we buy, but we really should. I've just had my 1ZZ with 64K nearly fail because someone used a ton of RTV on the sump. It broke apart and clogged the pickup. If you work on your own cars and you have a used car - drop the pan! Check the oil in depth, look at the strainer. If there's nothing there now, there shouldn't ever be, so you'll only have to do it once. If there's something there - you've caught a potential engine failure before any issues actually occured.

5k miles, 3 oil changes already, not dropping my pan until close to end of warranty…. If she blows she blows, Toyota gonna have to replace it 🤷🏾‍♂️ Infinite engine glitch 🤣

"gonna have to replace it" Its going to be a fight: here in the Bay Area, its seems to be a multiple month process PLUS having to hire a lawyer to get a GR86 engine failure warranty claim approved
