This is my 2022 Toyota GR86 with another installment of the long-term ownership review series. I bought my Toyota GR86 (base) just over 1-year ago, after owning a 2013 Scion FR-S, for 9 years. It's obvious I love this platform and chassis but there are also some things I don't like. I talk about reasons why I've made minor mods to my base trim and why I may be replacing the GR86. What would you do and who is the GR86 best suited for? Let me know in the comments below!

Thanks. It gives me some comfort that some people have tracked it many times no problem (relatively, doesn't mean the issue wasnt there). It's my daily, would've been nice to track, but not a deal breaker. Keeping my BRZ, if I did track it, maybe I'd be a little conservative.

@@NoHoHank Bad advice, imo. Without changing your stock oil pan for an aftermarket one, it's only a matter of time before you get starvation from high G turns. Oil level is irrelevant, the stock baffling allows the oil to slosh to one side of the engine during hard turns, which causes oil pressure issues and starvation, leading to a blown engine. Aftermarket oil pan and _then_ you're golden.

I’m 51 and picked up a 23 GR86 6 months ago. It’s my only car and I love it. As you say, this is the best driver’s car out there. Price, handling, rwd, manual, hand brake, light - all perfect. I had a Mustang GT which sounds better by far, and I’ve had a few Audi vehicles. The GR86 blows them all away. And I won’t be tracking it. So for a 20 something single, a 50 year old married, or a person with multiple vehicles, it is simply the best. Going to check out your channel, as this is the first time you popped up in my feed. 👍

It just started rusting away underneath and I sold it when the brake lines went. Engine ran great at a quarter million miles, just ate a little bit of oil. Now it's the Mustang year round. It's not an extra lol, but yes the one is there, it's hard to see it, it's pretty hidden in the glovebox and you'd never know unless told. Not that hard to hide the wiring through it though since there's a gap above the box. Feels they just put it to not make people upset of not having one. Even though I never see anyone use it for its intended purpose, they still use it for accesories.

I have BRZ, which does address one issue, throttle mapping. As for the replacement, I would get NC2 Miata, ND2 is faster but feels too loose. Plus in future NC2 might get K24 swap kits just in case engine blows. 😅 I am not worried about the engine blowing up on mine. If it blows up, I will replace it, chances do seem pretty low to me. 6-8k for rebuilding with a short block isn't expensive, might as well go for K24 swap. I have another car and am planning to get 3rd and maybe even 4th. I started doing track days this year and am planning to do 6-12 a year and have similar mods as you, camber bolts, brakes etc and doing wheels and tires later but nothing as grippy as you did, just 4S.

My Camry just broke down in NY after a friend’s wedding. Was stuck test driving cars for 2 weeks until I find out how crazy NJ and NY taxes are. So I get a ride back to SC and, tired of dealing with dealerships, I ordered a low mile 2013 brz off carvana. I figure out that night 80% of the body panels had been replaced and they didn’t match the original color correctly. Car was a salvage they sold as a clean title so needed to return it. Tanked my credit a bit but I fell in love with the car from the week driving it. Looking to figure out a ride to work for a month or 2 and then buying a new gr86. I do love the Neptune blue color so if you are looking to sell lmk or lmk what dealer you trade it into 🙏😂 Is my dream car

As a single guy and my only car I plan on keeping mines, I think it's too good of a car. Yes, there's the oil pressure problem on hard right turns, but that's mainly a track issue. It would have been fun to track it, I was looking forward to one day doing it, but it's such a niche thing for it being my daily. Tracking is not something to take lightly anyways, and you should prepare a car for that kind of abuse. But it's not going to stop me from hooning in it until there's a possible fix (I know it's not an easy one). I also look at the value this car is going to hold because there's nothing else in the category at the moment. A Miata is a compromissed daily and everything else is too heavy. Soon everything will be electric or hybrid, and I'll look back and miss this car.

I had a 2022 GR86 Premium in Neptune Blue and sold it in November of last year. First of all I loved the way it looked (maybe a little too much). For a modern car it drove great, smooth inputs, easy to either maintain traction or have a controlled slide. The steering feel was non existent though. I sold mine with 6,000 miles on it and I bought an NB Miata as it’s replacement. Apart from styling I by far prefer to drive this Miata with its proper steering feel, only weighs 2,299lbs and the most important for me is it’s fun at any speed. I also considered an s2000 and I prefer the ap1 over the ap2 with its more aggressive setup. However for me the NB Miata won me over with its lighter weight and steering feel. I can add power by either kswap kit, supercharger, turbo or na build if I need more acceleration. What keeps me in the Miata is how it feels to drive and for the price nothing compares. Though I do want to drive a Honda Beat.

I drive a 2023 BRZ mostly because of the practicality. Usually drive the SUV (a CX-5 so not too dissimilar to your setup…) when other people or long distances are involved but also nice to know kids or dog can fit in the BRZ in a pinch. If I didn’t have all that responsibility… well I’d probably have a ND2 Miata likely in RF form. Yeah it’s a bit softer to begin with but with some mods that’s not too hard to fix. I guess depends what kind of racing you’re doing and what mods you’re allowed to do to stay within certain classes. S2000, NA/NB Miata are also good options. Depending on budget maybe even an Elise?

I just sold my 14 BRZ last month for a NC2 miata, for the same reason as you: I recently got a cx-50 turbo as my daily, and the BRZ's driving experience is just not special enough: lakcluster engine, worse-than-cx50_steering, etc. Though Miata is a downgrade in some other's opinion, it provide an unmatched top-down experience, The 1st gen 86/brz might still be a wonderful 2nd car if you heavily modify it and make it a canyon/track toy though.

I'm trying to see what ppl think as far as age goes for owning a GR86. I'm 41 going on 42. I would love a GR86. But for my age i feel like i should be driving something like a Z or Supra but those cars are way out of my budget especially with the markups. My other vehicle is a Honda passport for the family. I do have 2 other cars in the garage but they don't see the road often. Which is why i want something that's not gonna break the bank and still be fun to drive. I guess my question is am i too old for a GR86?

I would consider going back to an frs… the gr86 is a great car and all but it’s still too new. I think after the hype goes away and the prices are down then the gr86 would be a newer s chassis. But for now I’d say frs or maybe a 350z, rx7 fc, 240 hatch. Something like that… Miata’s are so overrated and very tiny RC cars. Not practical as a daily. I do think they are better than an s2k which is another overrated car.

I would *_never_* take a stock Subaru on a track, like you have, with the stock oil pan/pick-up tube etc.. That's what causes the oil pressure issues and subsequent failures. You can basically get rid of any worry of engine failure by replacing the oil pan with an aftermarket one (if anyone makes one, yet. I'd imagine IAG will be, if they don't, already). The stock baffling causes oil to slosh to one side of the engine, causing starvation/low oil pressure. You see it happening more often because Toyota is giving owners track days with the purchase of the car. High G force turns on stock oil pans is going to cause a lot of failures.

@@jubbalandcars Agreed! I watched all your S2K videos multiple times and I can really tell how much love you have for this car as a 86/BRZ owner because I was on the exact same path. Last year I finally pulled the trigger on a 05 AP2, and now I'm a happy man because I finally OWN that enjoyment after dreaming about this car for more than a decade. As The Topher mentioned in his last S2K video, he doesn't even understand why he waited that long to finally get one of these. So don't wait, go get one!!! (PS. The market will likely be more softer this coming winter than the last one, you can see the recent trend on BaT, I'm actually looking for a 02-03 AP1 as my 2nd S2K, just want to own the whole package, inspired by your friend in the AP1/AP2 comparison video 😉)

@@abcwarrior91I had an AP2. Poor steering feel and a limp chassis that simply isn't rigid had me disagreeing with the internet for both road & track. Low slide controlability. Prefer the RX8 chassis from the same era. Owned both. Also had an Evora. The Emira will be like its sent from God.

Generally it's funny how people get spooked by the RTV issue for the GR86 (even those who have owned the GT86 for a long time before the GR86) if the GT86/Scion FRS/old BRZ actually always had it and had a worse oil pickup tube design than the GR86 does...

It's kind of funny really.. The Toyota/Subaru collaboration is going much worse than the collaboration with Toyota/BMW(supra). Who would have figured, with all the screaming 14 year olds complaining on the internet, you would have thought that BMW would have blown up on startup. Yet, it's the Subaru that is failing at low kms. As someone that owned a JDM WRX STi - that had classic subie engine failure - these flat engines in the GR86 from subaru are garbage.

Doesn't everyone get 10 year warranty at Toyota (if you let the dealer do the yearly maintenance)? If so, why even worry about the small chance of an oil starvation issue? Toyota will repair it for free.

@@jubbalandcars I find this engine is smooth and fast revving, which is great for a sports car. Yeah, it doesn't sound great, sometimes like a lawmower lol, but get rid of the fake engine noise and add an exhaust and it's pretty engaging. Fast revving NA though, that's that boxer magic.
