Although too young this tournament, thankfully you can see clips on KZfaq, 1982 tournament in Spain was excellent. Like Holland in 1974 the best team didn't win. That had drama of penalty shoot out, Battiston flattened by Schumacher and some upsets along the way.

Totally agree. And to think, the three most skilled European players at the time: Eusébio, Best, Cruyff, were absent, speaks volumes for that 1970 world cup tournament. Any other world cup tournament's, with that type of brilliant players missing, would have lowered the tournament quality significantly.

RIP Franz Beckenbauer. My Dad has told me more than once that we lost this game because Alf Ramsay subbed off Bobby Charlton with England 2-0 up (to rest him for the semi final, presumably) which gave Beckenbauer the freedom to start running the show in midfield. A tremendous player and manager; a proper captain and a model professional.

Charlton was old and had fitness problems to keep playing in the 2nd half at 1,800 meters and 30° C at 2:00 PM in Leon México. Banks´ absence was more determinant, and also determinant was the very very bad luck in that game. Also, the Argentinian referee did not conceded two penalties.

When he first arrived at mancheter united and saw the busy babes , he says it was Bobby who he was most in awe of . Giles played with Bobby and he said you would wait for Bobby to give you the ball but he wouldn't give it to you . He said Bobby didn't need to , he was so quick and such a great dribbler he could run through a whole defence and smash it on to the net with either foot . Bobby is the most underrated footballer in history , very few people realise how great he actually was . Beckenbauer sure knew after he played against him in both world cups.

Müller's goal was not Bonetti's fault. Müller was a master at positioning himself and anticipating where the ball would go. Notice how that central defender marking him was mislead. It looks easy for Müller just as it happens with gifted players. I wonder if this frequent blame on Bonetti for that goal was originated in England missing Banks (yes, he may have allowed less goals, but then one could put the blame on the keeper after every English loss without Banks) and Müller not yet demonstrating internationally how great he was.

Maybe yes, a tatics misjudgement taking off Charlton, he could easily run the whole game and changing marking the Kaiser with a rested substitute, Bell, to this duty, or alternate marking on the german # 4,freeing Charlton closer to the box since he had chances to shoot far distance. Heat was the same torture for both teams. Somehow, the english tireness unexpctedly collapsed while Schoen made the right changes mostly at right wing. That english squad, against Brazil, showed a effective and different play, from that 66' boring air attack. And to end rant, even the likes of Rivelino, Tostao said England deserved to win Brazil to be fair on that game of luck to one side. As a Chelsea fan it grieves me to say that Peter Bonetti was at fault for all 3 goals. Obviously the first, but with the second he came when he should have stayed back and for the third he stayed on his line when he should have come. Against that Bobby Moore and the defence were at fault for not pushing up for offside on Seller's goal and ball watching for the third. We now know that Peter wasn't in the best mental frame of mind for this game but played very well up until the Kaiser's goal. He also made a great save from a 1 on 1 with Gerd Muller when the score was 2-1 and not many keepers did that.

Bonetti was a good keeper but there were better ones in England at less fashionable clubs. A young Peter Shilton had been Banks' understudy at Leicester and was in the initial squad but left out for the trip and Jim Montgomery at Sunderland was also superb especially at reaction saves. Remember Monty's double save in the FA cup final in 1973? I think either of them would have performed more reliably and saved at least one of the ones that beat Bonetti.

There are those who still blame Peter Bonneti for West Germany's goals. The first one maybe, but not the other two. Just look at the replays and you will see that Englands defence was all over the place. Why Peter Osgood (that seasons top league scorer) never played in any of Englands' games is beyond baffling. Ramsey never liked any real 'flare' players. He even put Geoff Astle on against Brazil, who promptly missed an open goal. It was Ramsey that lost us the world cup.

West Germanys comeback in this match was the best seen in a World Cup from 0 - 2 down on 49 mins to 3 - 2 AET. All 3 goals were sublime especially Uwe Seelers header just pure genius! West Germany showed in that game if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything! What an inspirational team that was and to think it was on the eve of them becoming the first team to become holders of both the World Cup and euro championships. A feat not to be repeated until the year 2000! RIP Gerd Muller and Uwe Seeler

Absolutely. There´s another one at 1:13 on Franny Lee. England were denied progression to the semi-final because of a poor referee. West Germany were very lucky to have won this. Had Lee´s penalty been given, the game might have been wrapped up in the first half. This match was arguably the start of the decline and fall of England as an international force. The tantalising thought remains that had they gotten to the final, the future of English football might have been so different. I say that as an Irish man.

That was a clear trip by Beckenbauer on Clarke in 1975. Imo the ref didn't give it because the Kaiser was regarded as a 'gentlemanly' player and such a player couldn't possibly ever resort to needing to foul an opponent.

I'm here after watching Episode Three of 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?' on KZfaq last night, that episode originally having been broadcast half-a-century beforehand (23rd January 1973). This match and the date on which it took place was referenced by Terry Collier (James Bolam) during the episode in question, so the writers, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, got the date correct, which would have been a relief for them! It's funny that Episode One (9th January 1973) saw a reference to Ilie Nastase, so I'll perhaps have to look out for any more 'name-dropping' of foreign sports' personalities after Gerd Müller was mentioned by name!

During that World Cup, Helmut Schoen regularly brought 2 very tricky, fast wingers (Grabowski and Libuda) into games at about the 75 min mark. The heat was so intense in Mexico that those 2 would run already exhausted full backs ragged. That tactic was just as important to this game's outcome as Ramsey taking off Charlton. The idea was to save him for the next game - and at 2-0 England were totally in command. West Germany were being completely outplayed. I really don't think anyone at that point expected anything other than an England win.

The German right winger Grabowski definitely swung things their way , but people tend to forget that Bobby Charlton was substituted AFTER Beckenbaur's goal. Moreover , it seemed a logical change at the time as Colin Bell was the form box-to-box midfielder at the time and contributed fully as i recall. Bonnetti gets a lot of stick for this performance but , again , didn't Banks let a very similar shot squirm under him in the 66 final ? What a life! You do not need to win everything to be one of the greatest, and him, with his 5 ft. 6.5, did not even need to be tall. To be fair, England's second goal was just as lucky as Beckenbauer's...Maier should have saved it comfortably. Ramsey's changes had logic. Germany were starting to overrun England even with Charlton on the pitch. Charlton was on the field when Beckenbauer scored. Wasn't it Charlton's job to track Beckenbauer and vice versa? Bell did very well when he came on. Hunter came on to bolster a defence that was wilting badly. I just think Ramsey's hard-running 4-4-2 system took too much out of his players in the heat and thin air of Mexico.

Charlton said later he felt really great during that game. Beckenbauer said later he couldn't get a grip on the game in midfield until Charlton was taken off with 20 minutes left . I was just 13 years old and still remember it clearly and how upset I felt at the final result . Many things went against England that day , but notwithstanding those things England would of won but for that substitution . Who knows if we would of beaten Italy in the semi , but if we had it may of even been a more amazing final against Brazil than the one they had against Italy . That's what disappoints me most even now all these years later. England's finest side ever against probably the best ever international team . We had foretaste of it luckily two weeks earlier in on of Englands best ever performances against a Brazil side without their midfield playmaker Gerson . He was back for the final and Brazil had become an unstoppable force . But it's intriguing to think of what might of been . For me Mexico 70 was a golden epoch . Footballs zenith for me was then .

I think vordman hits the nail on the head, but would go slightly further and say that this was UNarguably the last time England were a major force. Personally I think the 1970 team was better than that of '66. But so much went wrong for them in Mexico. Conspiracy? Quite possibly, yes - particularly with Bobby Moore and the bracelet incident. Banks getting the 'runs'? He wasn't the only one - Charlton and Ball had similar ailments earlier in the campaign and recovered within 48hrs (as did Banksy). But the arrangements made beforehand weren't too clever... apparently it was Ramsey who vetoed the local food, and it was stuff like this which cast England as the villains of the piece. City centre hotel in busy, noisey Guadalajara? Bad move. The substitutions against West Germany? Beckenbaur admitted years later that this what changed the match. Peter Bonetti? Yes, bad game and he admitted as much himself. All in all, I personally think England were good enough to reach the final. But by then, Brazil, probably the best international side ever, were on fire, and I don't think England could have lived with them. Sadly, especially after the latest embarrassing WC campaign, I think it will be a very long time yet before England are serious challengers again.

I was 14yrs old and watched the match at boarding school in Scotland! Worst day of my life haha - with England losing to Scotland at Wembley in '67 a close 2nd. Yes, the Scots delighted at Germany's comeback though did admit to Bobby Moore's outstanding performance that day, and against Brazil, esp the tackle against Jairzinho. I never thought much of Bobby Moore till the '70 WC but I realised his ability to read the game at the back and intercept the pass was phenomenal. A shame Francis Lee did not live up to the promise he had shown in 1969. What a great pair of fullbacks we had. Great players and favourites on both sides made for a memorable game

Great game and England may have lost but they were a great team. Had read the Bonetti obit and it described his responsibility for the first two goals. Harsh IMO. Only the first was his fault. The header from Seeler was just an unbelievable piece of play. He tried to head it where it went so it was no fluke. I don't think I ever saw a clearer penalty than the one not given for the foul on Bell ( and I'm Scottish so there's no way I am favouring England ). I was too young to remember this ( 5 yo ) but I have never seen an England team come out and do the business like they did under Ramsey. Even under Robson I always thought they were a little bit lucky and were feared by teams who could have beaten them because of the stature of England in having invented the game and once been half decent.

Bonnetti only at fault for the first goal. I think. Seeler header was impossible to predict and poor marking by the defenders gave Muller the space to collect the spare ball for the third goal. Bonnetti got a lot of unfair criticism for this match. England lost the game through poor game management, not defending a two goal lead. Ramsey taking off Charlton released Beckenbauer to becoming less a man marking Centre Back to an attacking central midfielder who then set the pace of the game in midfield and kept possession when England had previously dominated the middle of the pitch. Helmut Schon made an inspired substitution with Grabowski who troubled England down the right wing all the rest of the game and set up the winning goal. Germany deserve a lot of credit for showing grit, character and adaptability to get back into the game.

Bobby Moore holds back from challenging Gerd Muller for the winning goal. I never saw Moore head a ball, and he held back from contesting this looping ball into the six-yard box. With the world championship on the line, why did he stand back for Muller?

For years after this match, Alf Ramsey was pilloried for having taken Bobby Charlton off with half an hour to go, thereby releasing Franz Beckenbauer to wreak havoc on the english defence. In Ramsey's defence it ought to be noted that it was a VERY hot afternoon, and Charlton (still England's best attacking player) wasn't getting any younger: with a 2 goal lead, and half an hour to go, Charlton was replaced by Colin Bell, who was regarded as the fittest player in British football at the time. All said, it was an even game, won by the ace finisher Gerd Muller.

Germans being Germans playing football. I was always against them, never liked their rude and simple gameplay style. But without them and their phenomenal stubbornness- we would never have so many historic dramas which constitute the best parts of football history. This game was one of those dramas, as well as 1966 WC final, semifinal 1970 against Italy, semifinal against France 1982, the final game of WC 1986…

Did you know that Germany‘s first victory against England was the 1:0 in Hannover in 1968? Beckenbauer scored. In earlier times the games typically ended 4:1, 5:2, 6:3 etc for England. Then came Wembley in 1966, then Hannover, then Dijon, then in 1972 Wembley again ( 3:1 for Ger) and from then on ....... Well. What the bloody Germans are for England 😄, Italy is for us: we always lose. 🙄
