In this thought-provoking video, I delve into the meteoric rise of young guitar prodigy Grace Bowers and pose the question: Is she truly the second coming of guitar greatness, or is it all just hype? Join me as I explore Grace's journey from virtual obscurity to the forefront of the music world, propelled by the viral power of social media during the pandemic.
I dissect how major media outlets have eagerly latched onto Grace's narrative, thrusting her onto the grand stage of music production, under the guidance of industry heavyweight John Osbourne. But amidst the dazzling lights and thunderous applause, I raise a critical inquiry: Has Grace been afforded enough time to mature and develop as a player, or is she being pushed too soon into the spotlight?
Furthermore, I contrast Grace's story with that of other young guitar phenoms, whose remarkable talents are quietly flourishing without the same fanfare and hype. Are these budding virtuosos being overlooked in favor of sensationalized narratives and clickbait headlines?
Join me as I navigate the complex intersection of talent, publicity, and artistic development, pondering whether Grace Bowers is a genuine musical prodigy or simply a creation of the hype machine. This video isn't just about one musician; it's a reflection on the state of the music industry and the delicate balance between fame and artistic integrity.

The amount of times you used the word “marketable” is weird. I work my ass off. I have no manager and have done almost everything myself. I used to play in nashville every night, anywhere and with anyone, whenever I could. I started online school so I could do these things, I sacrificed a lot of my social life by choosing to not be in high school. I wrote/ co wrote my entire record I have coming out. The music is almost entirely written by me. The hodge podge is my vision, I assembled the band. It’s easy to look at the opportunities I’ve gotten, but no one sees the amount of hard work and hustling I had to do to get these things. This video is ridiculous

Sorry you feel that way Grace. It’s a tough position you’re in and there is no doubt you have put in some work but all players put in a lot of work to play guitar. It’s a lifetime pursuit and no doubt there will be a lot more work as you tour and develop as a player. We all work our asses off as musicians that is not exclusive to you but in relative terms you still have a long road ahead with no doubt a lot more work. There are many great guitar players in Nashville. You have a great future ahead of you and I hope and wish for you the best.

I wish her the best actually. But I know about putting in the work. I wrote, performed guitar, recorded, engineered, packaged, played live, and released nearly 25 CDs and DVDs of some really adventurous music, and because business and circumstances are the way they are, I'll never be known. Just know fame is a crap shoot, it really takes a lot of luck and doing things in a very mainstream way. Its truly bizarre.

Her "Who Knows" video is excellent. Nice sound. It's funny that I personally think she is the best of the young players. I got there by seeing a vote post about who was better. This kid or that kid (they were both boys btw) Tbh I thought they both played waaaay too much. Then I saw a video of her playing with one of the guys. She stood back and let the other kid play for what seemed like 10 mins. I checked out her videos and she has much better phrasing and sound. Anyone can play fast. Play slow and make it sound good! She can do it. I don't care if what gender or race, she has some feels and restraint. These other young kids whiddly whiddly whiddly... She placed the notes well and sounds great. I think she actually is hindered by her looks and isn't taken seriously. I'd like to see your videos of some of these other kids (boys) who are way overrated. I won't mention names but Sheesh. Anyone can play a pentatonic scale fast. It's not impressive

I've seen her a couple of times here in nashville, and I can tell you that she's good - very good - but if she was a guy, no one would give a shit. There are great guitar players all over this town no one has ever heard of, or ever will. But this is show biz, and no one ever said anything about "fair". I think it's great that the demographic is changing - I, too, am sick of old white guys with guitars, and I AM one. But the novelty factor is gonna wear off fast.

Very well said. Being an old dude myself I’ve seen some incredible players over the years and most don’t get a shot like this. Will be interesting to see where it all goes. As good as the players are here they all pale compared to the players I saw in LA at G.I.T. The teachers there were playing things guys here don’t even have a concept of. Guys like Don Mock, Gambale, Joe Diorio, I could go on and on. Gettin this chance is huge and hopefully she takes it runs with it and continues to grow as a player.

Grace started off doing 'Live' sessions on Reddit (during covid). She did it all herself and still does all her social media herself (according to her in interviews). I am amazed at how fast her star has risen in the past year. Maybe her star is getting ahead of her but we will see. I agee the Music Biz seems to have latched onto her as a marketable young star. Time will tell if it is too much too fast. And on the topic of her genre, I like her music choices. I can't stand the auto-tuned crap on the top 40 lists these days. The number of 'Social Media Guitar Sensations' is mindboggling! Badbrad hit this on the nail. Anyone worth their salt about guitarists know about the shredders, those mindless demons on the frets. Yet, I'm willing to bet 99.9% of them are unknown and will remain there. Meanwhile, the world knows of one who literally made his name in the industry with 3 notes and hardly ever played a chord... the late great B.B. King. The 'Bowers;' of social media are a dime a dozen but as another great guitarist of all time, Carlos Santana said, when you paly a note [one note], make it your own. That's where guitarists like Santana, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Albert King, Freddie King, Albert Collins, Shuggie Otis, Richie Blackmore, SRV and a host of other becomes INSTANTLY recognisable from the very first note the play! Today's music is about 'packaging' and Bowers has got the 'package'. A most unlikely person to define today's music to it's core was Lindsay Lohan, who said, *"MUSIC NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD!"* Amen!

I think the big difference from now and back in the 60s and 70s is that in the past-- a young guitarist would develop in bands before going solo-- I think of Peter Frampton with Humble Pie and Eric Clapton with -Cream, Yardbirds, Delaney Bramlett, John Mayall. Marketing is part of the game these days (that's always been true but, I think, moreso today). For every guitarist that people know about there are probably 100 that are just as good that no-one will ever hear about. Yes, it IS about marketing, and it IS about marketability (look, showmanship, et al). Grace Bowers is very good. Better than some, not as good as others. At her age, though, I'm really interested in seeing where she will be years from now. I started following Samantha Fish at about the same age. She was fun, she was watchable, as a guitarist she had great feel but was very raw. Today, she's a different player and performer. Tomorrow, who knows???

Your "Hodge Pogage" is well picked and I mean this, you play well together with musical sociallabilitys. Your guitar player is exceptional, but does not overplay you AND you don't overplay HIM!!! None of your band GRABS the spotlight and one of the reasons that this 72 year old respects you and the BAND! You are "marketable", and please do that anyway you see fit. You aren't perfect, YET, but I see it in your face and other phycical expressions that come with HUMAN feelings that TALK your soul to your audience; you are GENUINE! I left a note on your '61 SG and I hope that you got that, earlier...that was MY first good guitar that I got from my parents in 1966. You have the tallent, the obvious internal hart and soul that is required, now give it the time and experience to develope yourself to what is "ALL from the HEART and SOUL", so that ALL may understand you! PS, dont worry about the arpegieos...none of the GREATS ever worried about how many notes they could play in 3 seconds, but they did/do concern conveying the FEELING of each bend and trill. I'm a little tired of the wave of "look at this kid from 8-15 and how they can play". I'd rather have folks who pay some dues and have to play crappy gigs for people who may or may not be interested or with maybe monitor issues or a drummer with an off day. That's where you really hone yourself and help bring your fellow players up too because you have to concentrate on each other. Look at SRV and Eric Johnson as examples. They were each around 30 before the world at large heard of them. By that point, they'd shed their influences and were ready to develop their voice, not still trying to get out of someone else's because they'd played tons of gigs and had those days where stuff didn't work right and you had to do it even though your tone may not have been there or audible to you.

He's not wrong. Her trip is not really developed. No matter how well you play, you have to have the original material, a hit. In just a very few yrs she'll be considered an adult, grown woman. Shoulder to shoulder with all the zillions of really good players. Just ask Joe Bonamassa. He'll be the 1st to tell you all this & more. If she doesn't come up with good original music, she'll just join the ranks of all those other guitar players.

I don’t mind hype, but I can’t stand the amount of hype they’ve used for her. I’ve never been one to buy what someone is pushing hard to sell me…and they are pushing her harder than I’ve seen anyone pushed lately. It feels very artificial and forced. She’s a great player and seems like a good person, and there are many great players out there (it’s 2024, and lots of people play!), but it seems she is being marketed to reel in cash for the brands

What she’s got going for her right now is novelty. There’s also the cognitive dissonance - blues is sweaty, dirty, and mean. And she’s a girl, and demure, and polite. So …. Is it still the blues? Sure it is. And if she can write a tune and sell it, she’ll do great.👍

The Nashville Syndicate only cares about the quick money. Grace is being used, and she needs to slow things down before her star flames out. She is not a good guitarist, she is very, very average. She doesn't seem to have a good grasp of playing rhythm guitar, and relies on the same handful of licks, and noodling. She always appears lost when she is playing with a group. In the last video I saw, they have added a really great young male guitarist that appears to be filling in all the empty spaces that Grace is creating in the live songs. She needs to find a really great guitar teacher that will help her get the foundations figured out. I am glad you made this video, there are so many non-musicians that actually think she is a teenage prodigy.....This smacks of the "Taylor Swift Syndrome".....

Jeez guy.... jealous much? Give the kid a break! She likes to play guitar and it just so happens that she's pretty darn good at it. Are there more talented musicians out there? Absolutely! The Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Prince, Grunge, and so on, sold millions of records in their time but they certainly were NOT the best musicians at that time Just because the absurd crazy music business chose her to represent them, don't hate Grace for being young, talented, pretty, funny, and having THE best hair in music. As a fellow senior guitarist you should have made two videos, one chastising the music industry and the other celebrating, supporting, and encouraging young talent.
